General :: KPackageKit Not Finding Correct IP Address
Aug 15, 2010
I have installed Kubuntu Lucid x86 10.4 LTS for the first time. Has anyone got a link that explains how KPackageKit gets the IP address of the repositories? I can install packages using sudo apt-get install xxx OK . KpackageKit tells me I have updates from the repositories. I can select them all and apply , but I get an error that it can't find the repository under a 192.168.100.129:8080 address . Which is not a surprise . I am using mirror.optus.net as a repository and can ping it fine on the command line. So is there somewhere else that KPackageKit maps IP addreses ? I have tried another mirror mirror.aarnet.edu.au and got similar results. My local sub-net is not 192.168.100 and have tried setting fixed IP on the local sub-net and different DHCP addresses and still the same error.
The problem: when kpackagekit would prompt me to update packages, it would ask for my password. I would enter it, and the dialog would reject it with the message "incorrect password, please try again". Over and over. The password WAS correct -- it worked in Synaptic and on the command line using sudo, and obviously it also worked for logging in.
I suddenly had a hunch that kpackagekit might not be the culprit, and that authentication was being done by a different program -- and lo and behold, the dialog actually said policykit up there...
So, searching for policykit problems out there, I ended up seeing someone reinstalling theirs for their problem (which happened to be different from mine). The code to do that, in the command line:
Code: sudo apt-get install --reinstall policykit
After that, entering the password after kpackagekit prompts me to has worked fine and the updates happen as nature intended.
I can't get KPackageKit run successfully even once. Every-time I get the same message that can't correct the software origin as following:
While I can update the software through zypper in the terminal window, I also get a warning message to say some package will NOT be update as following :
I already implement the one-click solution to thread:Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide, except that I got another warning message when I click to switch system packages to the version on packman repository as following:
Another question is every time I click the accept button of the YaST2 window, it will install the packages and quit directly and never give any confirmation of the result. Is this normal?
The last question is when I use Amarok or qmmp to play music which be shared via Samba on my homeserver, the system always copy the music file to the local folder,/var/tmp, and then can begin to play rather than play it immediately by stream. Is this also normal?
Im an academic (university networks and security lecturer) studying/teaching network and operating system security, and inspired by the work of Hovav Shacham set about testing ASLR on linux. Principley I did this by performing a brute force buffer overflow attack on Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 9. I did this by writting a little concurrent server daemon which accidently on purpose didnt do bounds checking.
I then wrote a client to send it a malicious string brute forcing guessed addresses which caused a return-to-libc to the function usleep with a parameter of 16m causing a delay of 16 seconds as laid out in [URL] Once I hit the delay I new I had found the function and could calculate delta_mmap allowing me to create a standard chained ret-to-libc attack. All of that works fine. However .... To complete my understanding I am trying establish where I can find the standard base address for ubuntu 9 (and other distros) for the following, taken from Shacham:-
Quote:
[code]....
/proc/uid/maps gives me some information but not the base address ldd also gives me the randomised starting address for sections in the user address space but neither gives me the base address. Intrestingly ... when a run ldd with aslr on for over (about) 100 times and checked the start point of libc I determined that the last 3 (least significant) hex digits were always 0's and the fist 4 (most significant) where between 0xB7D7 and 0xB7F9. To me this indicated that bits 22-31 were fixed and bits 12-21 were randomized with bits 11-0 fixed. Although even that doesnt define the boundaries observed correctly.
Note: I am replicating the attack to provide signatures to detect it using IDS, and for teaching purposes. I am NOT a hacker and if needed to could reply from my .ac.uk email address as verification.
I'm looking for a way to get my IP address using the command prompt in Linux. I know when you type "ifconfig" you can get your local IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.103), but I'm looking for my IP address that I get from my ISP. How can I get this from Linux without having to visit some website?
when i send any packet to anu destination and want to see he mac address of source and destination i am using the command tcpdump -qec1 but rather then getting the mac address of source and destination each time i am getting mac address of the system which is broadcasting. will anybody tell me how can i get source and destination mac address even if any other packet is also being broadcast to my network.
If i have a shell script to run on a Linux unit, which has a command to Reset(or say upgrade) the unit in between the script. Is it possible to find out the memory address of the next waiting command so that i can store the address to any environment variable in flash , then after Reset will continue Run from the stored address.
I have a new system I built this week. I have the nvidia drivers installed, but desktop effects, googleearth and Quake4 all try to load the /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 from mesa-libGL and fail to start.I have two other machines, both with nvidia video, and don't have the problem with them. I've looked for differences on the systems, but haven't located anything so far.
How do i find the correct path to my cd-rom drive? I want to install office 2007 using wine and I have used the programmerfish tutorial and now have to do the following:type wine /path to cd/setup.exe but I cannot seem to find the correct path.
-I tried /dev/sr0/setup.exe but it returned an error. -I tried /dev/sr0/media/setup.exe. returned the same error. -I tried /dev/media/setup.exe. Also no good.
I thought using df would help me and there i found /dev/sr0/ would be my cd-rom drive. Dunno it this correct though.
I'm looking for the ISO that I download to put on a flashdrive. Maybe I'm stupid, but every link mentions 'CD/DVD' and it throws me off. i'm just trying to get the horrid Windows 7 off of my new Hp mini 110 and Ubuntu in its place. my old netbook had 10.04 on it. but i think i want to give 10.10 a try. so thats the one im looking for.
I am a complete noob in the Linux community, having JUST installed my first Linux distro on my PC (that being Slackware 13.37).That having been said, please be patient with my TOTAL confusion is this regard : How do I determine which version of a package I need to download (in this example, I will use Yakuake, a program I AM trying to find at the moment!). I have done searches on the internet of the type"Yakuake for Slackware", etc., and I have always found results that I believed were a link to the correct version. However, when I finally have the package downloaded (I have downloaded BOTH source packages as well as the build app.), they are always for a DIFFERENT VERSION!
This is most frustrating...; is there a "listing" of different packages that are compatible with a specific distro / version? I realize that, in many cases, I may require a newer version of a library, etc., but again, how do I determine this ahead of time, before I bother downloading the actual app. I wish to install? I can use another example - I attempted to install OpenOffice; I began by searching for OpenOffice for Slackware / KDE (as some sources indicated that Gnome was the required gui for this package...).I found a site with an install cd .iso that was supposed to be multi-platform KDE compatible, but NONE of the versions would install on Slackware 13.37... - you get my point?
I use F12 and I need help with correct syntax to specify range of IP address in hosts.allow or hosts.deny or in /etc/exports file eg. 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.255.
When update ubuntu 8.04 amd 64 show this message: Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I'm troubling setting up my dhcp3-server.Although I've configured "option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1" in my dhcpd.conf my windows-xp-clients dns-server address is set to 192.186.1.1.This is strange! All other things seem to work correctly. This is my dhcpd.conf:
My Ipod got stolen a few days ago and I am trying to figure out its mac address so that i can track it. I have sshed into it several times and i found some logs for some of the sessions but I cant find its mac address anywhere. I am wondering is there a way i can figure it out with my ssh logs or some of my other logs?
How can i find out what mac address had been configured by factory default. I changed my mac address with
Code:
ip link set addrs 00:01:02:03:04:05
and now want to have the original one back. I'm having some trouble with a gigabit LAN PCI Express card. Namely the 89156 from delock. Output of dmesg
Code:
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded [ 4.137225] r8169 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16 [ 4.137268] r8169 0000:02:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 4.137346] r8169 0000:02:00.0: irq 27 for MSI/MSI-X

So the card was recognized by the kernel. The driver was loaded and everything fine.... should be! But after assigning an ip addr and setting the nic up with
Code:
ip addr add 192.168.1.1/24 dev eth1 ip link set dev eth1 up
the kernel complained about something like that
Code:
?SISTEM? Can't assign address Also I could not find anything useful on the net finally the readme gave me some. So i changed the MAC address and everything was fine. The nic came up and got an ip through dhclient.i want to know why the old/original mac address didn't work. But even after reboot the new mac address remains. All I know the old one begun with 7b. how to get the original mac of a nic?
I am trying to find IP address. In a socket programming tutorial, I found :
Code: $ nslookup localhost command. It gives me a address. However, one colleague told me :
Code: $ ifconfig
It also returns me inet_addr. But both are different. Kindly tell me the correct method to find IP address? I have also checked the /etc/hosts file but it says "localhost"
I would like, from a C program, find the hardware MAC address of the default route path. With BASH I can do a 'route' find 'default and then an ifconfig and grep for 'HWaddr'. Are there C calls to do the same??
i want to know mac address of a particular ip but the problem is that i am unable to ping that ip but that ip is being used by someone in my local network that i know from my proxy logs. i want to know the mac address of that ip,
Writing a program that finds the IP address of a host name. Sorry forgot to include the line numbers, but where the $$$ is where the syntax error is. The errors are syntax error before "{" token and syntax error before "if". I've looked throught the code for a couple hours and can't figure out what's causing it. The code is attached below.
Is there an application that will take the data from an Open Office spread sheet and locate and mark each address on a map?I've got a long list that I need to sort and locate by zip codes.
im REALLY new with linux and ive downloaded and installed Ubuntu...now heres the question.how do i set up WLAN internet use? ive tried using ipconfig/all on windows command but im not sure which info to use where save for the Physical Address going towards the MAC Address info
I just got a popup from KPackagekit saying: Code: Distribution upgrade available. Fedora-12 Fedora 12 (Constantine) Start upgrade now Do I want to do this? Is it safe to do so? Can I roll back afterwards? Is there a better way to upgrade?
Does anyone know where to get documentation for KPackageKit? I've searched on KDEs web site and this forum without success. Also on Fedora.org and googling but nothing so far.I recently loaded this distro (F13) to try it out after using mostly openSUSE and some of the minimal distros. I'm finding there is quite a learning curve, even I started in linux with RedHat 5.1.
I love Fedora and have been using Redhat since v5. I am using Fedora13 x86_64 and when I use kpackagekit if I use the dropdown list of groups it says waiting for service, then returns with no entries. I have done a yum clean all; yum clean metadata; yum clean dbcache; yum makecache
