After several attempts in setting up the rc.inet1.conf using alienbob's site as a guide, I'd like to see a sample of a working setup. My setup is very simple: home router and a desktop wireless, with wpa security. Using wicd is snap, but I'm tired of dropping connections; everthing worked with slack 13.0, but this 13.1 dropping wireless connection is driving me nuts, both on the desktop and the laptop.

I have a Radeon 4850 Graphic Card with ATI Catalyst as its driver, so I try to reinstall the driver hoping that it will fix the problem, which is a bad logic I admit it, and It fails to uninstall (for some reason the uninstall script is gone) and reinstall (problem with file extraction).
I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
I just finished installing Debian 2.1 on a very old laptop for some light word processing and web browsing, and am trying to get apt working so I can use it and dselect to install packages. Whenever I run apt-get update as a first step, I get stuck at 0% with an eventual timeout (this also happens when running the update step of dselect).
I know that my network card (a Farallon EtherWave) is working because I can ping my local gateway and remote sites. In my sources.list, I have this line for the Debian archive for this release: deb [url]contrib main non-free
Can anyone think of why I can ping the archive successfully, but apt will not read it? Do I need to change some network configuration, or my source line?

I'm looking for a tool that can directly convert mp3 file to a swf file. Tried ffmprg - 'ffmpeg -i master.mp3 -ar 22050 -ab 32 -f swf -y -vn new.swf', output is as follows:

I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.
The requirements I have from the tool are:
1. Can be ran from the shell.
2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.
3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.
I wonder do we need firewall for home pcs at all?I mean, fine, for servers and stuff, but I have my own laptop station. People have different position on this issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using NetworkManager Applet in Gnome to connect to the internet with a 3G modem. After last update few days back it changed the way it was recognizing the modem. I used to click on the NetworkManager Applet icon on the notification area and choose my configured mobile connection from the list. Because, as I said, I am using mobile broadband connection and I have to check via SMS my usage in order not to overcome the GB I am supposed to use (to avoid overpriced charge). In order to use Wammu to send/receive SMS I have to close the internet connection by right clicking on the NetworkManager Applet and uncheck "Enable Mobile Broadband" otherwise Wammu can't use the usb dongle because it's locked by the internet connection. Up to this point all is working exactly the same. Except when I uncheck the "Enable Mobile Broadband" the NetworkManager Applet disappears and I can only get it back with a reboot. Also I tried clicking on the applet and choosing "Disconnect" from the menu. The applet stays there but there are no more options for mobile connection. Only wired connections and VPN (whatever that is). In this case if I disconnect and reconnect the usb dongle it recognise it again. So my question is: Is there a way to make NetworkManager Applet to always stay aware of the usb modem without disconnecting or rebooting? Or at least is there a command that can search for new usb hardware without the described procedure?

I have done searches on the internet of the type"Yakuake for Slackware", etc., and I have always found results that I believed were a link to the correct version. However, when I finally have the package downloaded (I have downloaded BOTH source packages as
well as the build app.), they are always for a DIFFERENT VERSION!
This is most frustrating...; is there a "listing" of different packages that are compatible with a specific distro / version? I realize that, in many cases, I may require a newer version of a library, etc., but again, how do I determine this ahead of time, before I bother downloading the actual app. I wish to install? At any given moment I would like the desktop to be able to download a file over WAN at maximum speed while one laptop does the same over wireless and the other laptop shares files either wired through a gigabit switch or wireless over wireless G or N. Is this too much to ask from a router/switch/wireless AP combo unit with a single processor? I'm thinking it's at least a lot. What if I ran the modem into the WAN connection of a good router. Then connected a separate wireless G/N access point and gigabit switch to the LAN connections of the router? That seems to me like it would relieve some of the bottle necks I would encounter with the scenario described above AND allow me to upgrade each unit as needed.
