I wonder do we need firewall for home pcs at all?I mean, fine, for servers and stuff, but I have my own laptop station. People have different position on this issue.

(warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just switched over from firestart to gufw.I have set all incoming traffic to deny and all outgoing traffic to allow.I have rules set for incoming traffic, and have only opened 1 port on my system for torrents. My router also only has the same port opened which again is for torrents.I use "Network Tools" which is included on squeeze and do a portscan of 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 I get all kinds of crazy ports coming back as opened. What is even stranger is if I do a few scans, these ports change, so one port on one scan may come up as open, then it will disappear and a different port may show as open.
Mind you none but the torrent port is forwarded in my router, I have no idea what any of these other ports are, or why they are even showing up.What the heck is going on? I dont think this is normal? Am I at any higher risk for attack?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just finished installing Debian 2.1 on a very old laptop for some light word processing and web browsing, and am trying to get apt working so I can use it and dselect to install packages. Whenever I run apt-get update as a first step, I get stuck at 0% with an eventual timeout (this also happens when running the update step of dselect).
I know that my network card (a Farallon EtherWave) is working because I can ping my local gateway and remote sites. In my sources.list, I have this line for the Debian archive for this release: deb [url]contrib main non-free
Can anyone think of why I can ping the archive successfully, but apt will not read it? Do I need to change some network configuration, or my source line?
I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using NetworkManager Applet in Gnome to connect to the internet with a 3G modem. After last update few days back it changed the way it was recognizing the modem. I used to click on the NetworkManager Applet icon on the notification area and choose my configured mobile connection from the list. Because, as I said, I am using mobile broadband connection and I have to check via SMS my usage in order not to overcome the GB I am supposed to use (to avoid overpriced charge). In order to use Wammu to send/receive SMS I have to close the internet connection by right clicking on the NetworkManager Applet and uncheck "Enable Mobile Broadband" otherwise Wammu can't use the usb dongle because it's locked by the internet connection. Up to this point all is working exactly the same. Except when I uncheck the "Enable Mobile Broadband" the NetworkManager Applet disappears and I can only get it back with a reboot. Also I tried clicking on the applet and choosing "Disconnect" from the menu. The applet stays there but there are no more options for mobile connection. Only wired connections and VPN (whatever that is). In this case if I disconnect and reconnect the usb dongle it recognise it again. So my question is: Is there a way to make NetworkManager Applet to always stay aware of the usb modem without disconnecting or rebooting? Or at least is there a command that can search for new usb hardware without the described procedure?

Now, Ubuntu is already secure. So, is there any need for additional Firewall like this? (ufw is already present in Ubuntu, and this only Configures it). And, is it required to have it enabled always for keeping the Firefox running? (Because It may consume System Resources). Or, is there any other firewall that consumes less System resources or runs at the Background?

I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?

I don't have encrypted home directories currently, but I was wondering if there is an easy way to encrypt my home directory so that it is automatically decrypted when I'm logging in (console/kdm). Basically I would like to manually do same thing as Debian installer would have done.

I was running 2.6.26 and I've recently upgraded to 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 along with other packages (mostly dependencies)... which possibly involved the network stack.
After this upgrade my home gateway stopped working and I'm clueless to where the problem may be.
I can see that the iptables are still there when I type:

I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??

We've tweaked sshd_config so that they default to their home directory but they are able to navigate up/across/down to everything. This is a "straight-out-of-the-box" debian 5.0.5 Netinst. Just a basic system with Apache/MySql/PHP/SSH and no desktop.

I have some beginner questions about DHCP, Avahi, and configuring a small home LAN.Suppose I have a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP, which requires DHCP be enabled in my dsl modem/router/"firewall" [sic]. Suppose for simplicity I have just one PC behind the dsl modem.I think "enabling DHCP" in the modem/router means that a DHCP client runs on the router, which communicates with a DHCP server run by my ISP when I boot up a PC on my LAN. Is that guess correct? Can I get DHCP to assign a particular local IP, say 192.168.1.10 (which is not the one taken by the router--- for this discussion, let's say that is 192.168.1.0) to my PC each time I boot it up?
Now suppose I want to build a stand-alone firewall, so that my LAN will have the firewall and the first PC behind the modem, with the first PC virtually behind the firewall. By default, I think these will both have DHCP clients running which I need to configure properly. The firewall should also have a DHCP server which should control how local IP addresses are assigned, correct? I should try to arrange that the LAN has only DHCP server, only one NTP timeserver, only one DNS nameserver, correct?My first PC seems to have installed an autorun client called Avahi, which performs DNS multicast services and incorporates something called zeroconf which seems to have something to do with remote desktops, which I don't need and which is a potential security hazard. But it seems that Avahi is an intrinsic part of the KDE desktop and cannot be removed. Just want to be sure that Avahi can coexist comfortably with dhcp3-client, which is also installed on that PC.
