Slackware :: Doesn't Start..xsession.errors Claim It Can't Open Display?

Jan 8, 2010

with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.

Ubuntu :: Claim Interfaced Failed: Could Not Claim Interface 0: Device Or Resource Busy

Apr 10, 2011

I'm currently running Ubuntu Maverick - 2.6.32-30-generic. I recently bought a Garmin eTrex Vista H, which connects via usb (from my reading, it looks like older versions connected over serial). Well, like so many before me, I can't seem to write to or read from the device via gpsbabel.Originally tried to read anything from the device (I have one waypoint in there) via:

Code:

gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb:

It returned "Found no Garmin USB devices." I then tried turning on the eTrex. Doing the same while locating satellites just does nothing - I have to escape from the command in terminal. Trying again produces the error:

Quote:

Claim interfaced failed: could not claim interface 0: Device or resource busy

After doing some research, I unblacklisted and then reblacklisted garmin_gps. I also went into

Code:

/etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules

to verify that the contents were:

Quote:

SYSFS{idVendor}=="091e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="666"

as directed in this . Everything seemed to be correct.I then followed some other advice found here and created the policy under /etc/hal/... Still no luck!

Ubuntu :: Stop The Xsession Reporting Errors

Apr 13, 2010

I delete the file and within about a week i am back to a "out of space error" I have tried root owning the file with no permission to write, but it still gets written, just with a number on the end

the system appears to be working fine otherwise. I could set a cron remove but that seems a bit more hacky than telling it to shut up.

Software :: Xclock Running From Start Script Doesn't Display Correctly?

Feb 21, 2011

I recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...

I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...).
All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.

My window manager: sawfish

Command to run xclock in my start script:

Code:
xclock -digital -brief -geometry -0+0
Attached picture:
Top: xclock initialized by start script
Bottom: xclock initialized by terminal

General :: X11 Forwarding - Error: Can't Open Display: <ip Of Display>

Jun 28, 2011

I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:

From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0

I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:

From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.
echo $DISPLAY
<no output>

I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.

I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>

Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.

Slackware :: Lilo Not Booting Slackware Correctly - Errors Inside?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

0800 78150744 sda driver:sd
0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition
0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device

The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

OpenSUSE :: Root Trying To Open Flashplayer In KDE Getting Cannot Open Display

Feb 18, 2011

We have a digital signage appliance built on SUSE 11.3 with a LAMP server that uses the flashplayer application to play a .swf file from localhost. It is a AOpen GP7A mini pc that has the nVidia drivers loaded. We have lots of customers that have been running the exact same system for over 6 months (we image the drive for each sale).

For some reason, my last customer is seeing the following problem shown below, and this linux configuration is way over my head. Everything else is working (local LAMP server is working, communicating with our production servers to get information works, etc). I have verified that it is screen 0 that is running (at least it shows with Ctrl-Alt-F7). I thought that it may have occurred because of updating the software with zypper up. I had the customer rebuild from the image being careful not to upgrade the software. The result was the same. The pc is a newer version compared to my bench pc, but there are multiple other customers running that same version just fine. So I am not sure if it is

The command is issued by a php script that is run in a root cron job. As I said, it works great on all other customer pc's including my bench system. I also tried to execute the command on a ssh terminal as the root user with the same result. I also upgraded my bench pc and it still worked properly.

The command being executed is sudo env DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/home/svision/.Xauthority flashplayer http://localhost/flash/sign.swf &

the result (when run in terminal) is: No protocol specified (flashplayer:15077): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

This is in gnome under F11.I have the Power Management Preferences set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and gnome screensaver is configured for 5 minutes idle time.On a regular basis, I'll leave my computer come back anda) the screensaver hasn't kicked inorb) the screensaver kicked in, but the power management features didn't kick in to put the display to sleep.It seems to be an intermittent problem and usually it goes away after I restart X, but then at some point it comes back. In the past, I've gotten in the habit of being logged in for weeks/months at a time but I find that I can't go more than a few hours without logging out and back in or else the screen won't go to sleep.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Camera Could Not Claim USB Device?

Aug 13, 2010

This appears to be a frequently-asked question, but unfortunately all the answers I have been able to find are either outdated or refer to software I am not using. [Edit: this is Lucid upgraded from Karmic on a Dell Dimension 4550] If I plug in my antique little Kodak EZ-200, it appears to be recognised; that is, /var/log/messages says:

How do I find out what module has claimed the camera, and permanently remove it or prevent it from ever doing so again? Is there some method of telling gphoto2 (or any other camera-handling program) to stamp all over anything else that has laid claim to a device and brute-force its way?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Claim Unallocated Disk Space?

Feb 7, 2010

I switched my laptop from a Windows only PC to a Windows-Linux dual boot. These 2 OS's use all 4 of my primary partitions:On Windows I have a 4.4 GB restore partition which can be used to restore the PC to its initial shipping state.I also have a 28 GB primary windows partition.On Ubuntu I have a 1.8 GB swap drive and a 28 GB ext3 drive for everything else.When I configured the dual boot I intentionally left 30GB dik space unclaimed figuring that if I liked Ubuntu I'd assign it to Ubuntu otherwise I could give it to Windows.

I now know that I love Ubuntu but I'm running out of storage on my disk. I can't delete the Windows partition because I need it for a few programs that don't run on Linux. I'd like to just expand the ext3 partition to take the 30GB that are currently unclaimed.However, I don't see an easy way to do this. When I go to create a partition GParted tells me that I can't have more than 4 primary partitions on a drive, that I need an extended partition.Unfortunately, an extended partition is also a primary partition so I have to delete an existing partition to get this to work. So my question is: Isn't there some way that I can just extend the Ubuntu partition to take advantage of the 30GB unallocated space?
