Ubuntu :: .xsession-errors Is Filling Up Fast

Feb 18, 2011

Just today I started getting notices about lack of disk space on my system. After much digging I found that .xsession-errors and .xsession-errors.old were taking nearly 70GB of space combined. The primary message I'm getting over and over again is: SSL_Write: I/O Error I have been unable to figure out what's causing this error.

Ubuntu :: Stop The Xsession Reporting Errors

Apr 13, 2010

I delete the file and within about a week i am back to a "out of space error" I have tried root owning the file with no permission to write, but it still gets written, just with a number on the end

the system appears to be working fine otherwise. I could set a cron remove but that seems a bit more hacky than telling it to shut up.

Here is the Xsession-errors log (it's a hidden file in your home folder). It mentions:

Slackware :: Doesn't Start..xsession.errors Claim It Can't Open Display?

Jan 8, 2010

with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.

Ubuntu :: Logged Errors Climb Into GB Range Fast?

Dec 2, 2010

I have had this happening off and on, since I moved to Ubuntu 10.04, via clean install. I did pick EXT4, which is the only difference I can think of.

What happens is, 3 of my log files suddenly start filling fast with "Unknown" errors. The three files are kern.log messages and syslog. All three files will have about the same measurement of size. It can take a few weeks or it can speed along fairly fast and use up my free space of 6 GB. For instance, today, I blanked the three files and within the space of about 4 hours they grew to almost 2 GB each! I blanked them again and rebooted, and in 3 hours they only grew to 5 MB each.

Below is a sample which shows where the "unknown" errors start. The first such error is in BOLD so that it is easy to find. Once they start happening there is little else printed in the logs. Does anyone know how to track down what is happening and fix this?

Ubuntu :: Few Errors But It Went By So Fast Could Only Read The "error" Part?

Jul 14, 2011

so what i did first was obviously use wubi to download and install ubuntu. after a 14 minute download, i was finally ready to proceed with the installation. i was excited, however, little did i know the installation would soon be a complete train wreck with little children aboard.here i am, sitting down, rebooting my LAPTOP computer (Acer Aspire 5336, Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU - 900 @ 2.20 GHz 2.19 GHz, 3.00GB RAM, 64-bit operating system -- bought it at walmart because my desktop is still at my parent's house),and then i choose to boot up ubuntu instead of windows 7. everything looks like it goes fine so far.

there were a few errors but it went by so fast i could only read the "error" part. i wait for the installation thingy to show, but it doesn't! the screen goes completely blank after a few more words show up and disappear all in a blink of an eye, so i wait a very long time. it shows a purple screen, and asks me to choose a boot thing or w/e. i choose linux (there were other options like windows 7, linux recovery, i forgot the rest), then it just restarts the computer and i choose ubuntu and it does it again, however it never shows the purple screen!

The only entries are window managers and "xterm". My script works when I log in from the console. don't tell me that Ubuntu (or GDM) has made things simpler by taking away the option of a .Xsession! Nah, couldn't be.

OpenSUSE Install :: Respawning Too Fast - Error: "Respawning Too Fast - Disabled For 5 Min" Freeze

Dec 12, 2009

Installing 11.2 from KDE LiveCD on an IBM ThinkCenter with 3.2Gb CPU and 1Gb RAM. Ubuntu 9.04 on first two partitions. I go through the configuration, click to 'install': Install display bars remain blank. After 2-3 minutes, black screen with scroll of attempted installation pieces and the error message: "Respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 min." Freeze.

Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Does anyone know how to deal with this? If you need more info, I will provide. Though it seems this is not an unusual problem when booting an installed system, there's no mention of it happening during installation.

Ubuntu :: Disk Filling Up - Disparity Between Df And Du?

Feb 19, 2011

For a while my root partition has been filling up for no apparent reason. I I have been deleting things to find out it fills up again in a mater of days. To make it more 'interesting', there is a disparity between what I get from df and what the du command is telling me. After dismounting the other file systems and turning off applications, this is what i get:

output of df -ha

Code:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdf5 69G 66G 54M 100% /
proc 0 0 0 - /proc
none 0 0 0 - /sys

[code]....

du claims that I'm using 29G on that partition, which sounds about right (this is my OS and basic /home partition, everything else is elsewhere). df on the other hand is telling me here that out of 69G, 64G are in use with only 54M left.

How would I go about altering this script to logout when nxclient closes? To make this more complicated, nxclient spawns a separate process (nxssh) when it logs in and closes itself.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cron Is Filling Up Logs?

Sep 1, 2011

I am using my ubuntu server as my home router.Everything is working as expected with one exception.y DSL modem is a POS and every now and again it looses connection to the router. Sometimes it needs to be reset and sometimes it does not.Either way, when this happens my ubuntu server needs to reacquire an IP from my ISP. If it screws up when I'm at home it's no big deal, but if it happens when I'm not around my housemates have taken to hitting the reset switch on the server. I'm not a big fan of this so I wrote a script to ping my ISP's gateway. If it's unavailable it bounces the eth0 interface and tries to get an IP. I am running this script every couple of minutes in a cron job. Now I'm getting syslog entries like

Code:
Aug 9 20:31:01 portal CRON[9602]: (root) CMD (/opt/ChkAndFixNetwork.sh)
every few minutes. This is annoying and makes the logs useless for troubleshooting. I

Ubuntu Servers :: Max Limit On Filling Up A Non-root Partition?

A friend of mine says this is an unsafe way to keep this partition, even tho I don't plan to add any more data to it or change anything within. I know I can archive the data to dvd, but I'd like to keep the data online for my users.

What are your opinions on this? Can I keep this archive partition at 100% capacity? Or do I risk some sort of data corruption? Should I mount this partition as read-only to help prevent any corruption?

Fedora :: Safe Way To Disable Xsession Error Log File?

Mar 26, 2009

I noticed the xsession-error file in my main user's home folder grow up to a big size, it's usually at 2-3MB sometimes up to 20MB. I use Fedora 10 64bit and KDE4.2. I got no problems at all and the xsession-error logfile is full of weird entrys, almost everything is reporting to it, mplayer, xine, opera, firefox, dolphin and many other software I use. I don't think the most of these entrys are real and critical system errors, especially all the mplayer stuff. However, I'm not worried about the file size since Fedora 10 seems to delete the file on every log in.

My problem is the disc access because all this never ending writings to hard disc kinda break things like the mount options noatime, nodiratime. I read something about you can redirect the logfile to /dev/null but that was for an ubunto distribution and I would like to get a how to for a save way to disable the xsession-error logfile, I got 8GB RAM so everything is in cache anyway after a long session, I really want to get rid of unnessesary hard disc access like that. If not recommend to disable it, can I direct it to an usb stick or ssd?
