I have Slackware 13.1 x64 and my graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 2400 on my laptop. I install from ATI official site driver for this card and now when I try to come in System Settings->Desktop I got this error:

I have a headless mythtv running 13, when there's no monitor connected X doesn't start. If I plug a monitor in it still doesn't do my any good as there's no kb/mouse either. I know the system has booted fine as I can connect to myth remotely. This a slackware or x problem? Want to run x11vnc here but without x I can't do that.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:
1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]
2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"
Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.

I want to set the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY and http_proxy and FTP_PROXY environment variables "somewhere", so all programs that recognise these can find them. I need root to find them for slackpkg and sbopkg, I need users to find them for Dropbox, I need them for cronjobs and scripts and wget.So I want to set these environment variables up somewhere, preferably something in /etc and have them set and accessible for everyone and everything. I am not using KDE or XFCE or any desktop. I need a command line solution.
Where is the best place to put this? I see that some other distros have a /etc/environment and these variables go in there. In Slackware, should I add them as a new file in /etc/profile.d and have them added every time /etc/profile is accessed? Is there a Slackware approved method that I don't know about?
I did a upgrade from 13.1 to 13.37 both 64 bit.Then I had the urge to checkout KDE 4.6.2 Now there the wheels came off :I get this message trying to start system settings.System Settings was unable to find any views, and hence has nothing to display.Anyway its my fault had a wrong version in the directory I installed from.

So it's a problem between sqlite and qt(?). Rebuild needed?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to Ubuntu 10.04. On this same machine I've used Ubuntu for 3 or 4 years now. Upgrading from 8 - 9 - 10. I love Ubuntu and use it as my everyday work environment. Anyway, recently when I start my machine in the morning it boots to commandline instead of the desktop. For the last couple days I boot to safe-mode and do a package repair. Sometimes more than once. Eventually I get the desktop to start but it is annoying. When trying to boot to Fail Safe Graphics Mode(?) I get an error stating: "Fatal Server Error: No Screens." The message referred me to /var/log/Xorg/failsafe.log. Here is a snippet of the end of that log file:

I have installed matlab at /home/trans/Matlab and xilinx at /home/trans/Xilinx. Though I have sysgen_startup.m at /home/trans/Xilinx/ISE_DS/ISE/sysgen/util if I try to run sysgen by using command "./sysgen" I get error as
ERROR: Could not find SysGen startup script at "/home/trans/Xilinx/ISE/sysgen/util/sysgen_startup.m".
As per the above mentioned link I found sg_config at /home/trans/Xilinx/ISE_DS/ISE/sysgen/bin/lin and used command "./sg_config -install_to_matlab /home/trans/Matlab" I get message like this

I didn't understand the above error. I have chosen matlab workspace as /home/trans/Documents/MATLAB but I haven't pointed anything to that location.
So finally how do I set environmental variables at /home/trans/Xilinx/ISE_DS/ISE and how do I get sysgen to work? I installed ISE from the DVD which I got from xilinx
with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using slackware64-current and this morning I have updated my system with using slackpkg. (As you know, huge changes has been applied on the current branch. Kernel, glibc and etc..) Everything went flawness and seems OK. I did not see any error message or somethink like this. After the update, kde does not start. Problem is, after KDM login, nothing happens and turn back to KDM login screen.
To understand what is going on, I switched to init 3 and performed "startx" command. Result is same but I saw some dbus error.
Then I checked whether hald and dbus does run or not and I saw it is running without problem.
Lastly I have removed dbus and hald packages and reinstalled but problem is still running.
I did a clean install, and so far I haven't noticed any serious problems with KDE4, although I can't find what I'm looking for, usually. I don't use my laptop much though. I also did a clean install on another system to 13.0 about the same time. X won't start on that system, it can't figure out the hardware I guess.
So I've just been using the command line. I don't really need a graphical interface on that system anyway. Right now I'm using the motherboard graphics support, but I will probably install a video card in a PCI-E slot and try X again. The system that I just upgraded from 12.2 (LUKS encrypted volumes and LVM) to 13.0 tonight has a number of problems. This was an upgrade, not a clean install. Based on my experience so far on this system, KDE4 does not seem to be ready for prime time. It is buggy, the menu system is more difficult to navigate than KDE3, and there are some apps I just can't find (e.g., Kedit). Overall it seems to have fewer apps than KDE3. Either that or they are well hidden well enough that I can't find them. My first impression was that KDE4 had clean lines and a modern appearance.......
I It does not start when the system boots. The smbd daemon is present and there are no suspicious messages in the system log, dmesg or the samba logs. The nmb service *is* enabled at all of the relevant run levels and does start if I issue the command "service nmb start" as root after I log in. This particular box's networking is 802.11n via a usb port and is under the control of the network manager. I have another fedora 12 box with an internal intel 5100 802.11n card and it does not have this problem.

I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.

This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:

I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.
I'm running Slackware-13.1 on my laptop. Connection to my network is via wlan0, a cable in most cases not pluged in.When starting the system the first attempt to configure the network is via eth0, which ends with dhcpcd timing out since there is no cable pluged in. Afterwards wlan0 is set up properly.
I have installed ifplugd, which is a daemon who connects to ethernet only if a cable is connected. With Gentoo this works out of the box. With Slackware ifplugd is started after rc.inet1 (probably). So the the system still tries to connect via ethernet before connecting to the wireless network.
I have also installed wicd.How can I manage that wlan0 is prefered over eth0?I noticed that neither wicd nor ifplugd belong to the default full installation of Slackware and therefore assume, there must be a solution which meets my requirements without even one of both programs.The laptop is only used at home. Wireless connection is normaly used. I need eth0 only in a case of emergency.
my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Slackware 13.37 on a new hard drive today. After booting in to KDE everything seemed to be working as normal. I hadn't yet installed my video drivers but I still have the limited eye candy afforded by default. After that I switched to XFCE and transferred some data over (for some reason Dolphin hates certain folders of mine) and when I logged back in all the desktop effects were inactive. When I selected desktop effects from the menu I saw the message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" No issues are listed, and I can select nothing, even after installing proprietary ATI drivers. I created a new account and everything works perfectly in it.
View 3 Replies View Related2nd and 3rd might be linux kernel problems but may help someone else so I included here.1st -- run level 4, /etc/rc.d/rc.4 and xdm -nodaemonJust installed 13.1 on an odd system, including building a new kernel.One thing I do is have the system boot to a command prompt and then run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to start XBut I found that the rc.4 uses xdm -nodaemon flag and it was causing problems so I removed and all is pretty good. I still see some odd behavior with the virtual ttys sometimes.2nd -- when building a new kernel, I found I need the device-mapper butcouldn't tell if that was a linux kernel issue or something to do with lilo, I didn't want and don't need multiple disk devices like for LVM or MD so I didn't plan to have this enabled.3rd -- CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23 When that kernel config option was selected and I have only an EXT4 filesystem, the filesystem was mounted as an EXT2, even though the kernel had no EXT2 feature. /etc/fstab specified EXT4 but the mount command showed EXT2. A silent problem that could leave an unpleasant surprise since EXT2 hos no journaling.4th -- I had to run lilo -C by hand in a virtual tty before finishing the install. This was what I had to do when installing 13.0 on different hardware. It seems that the lilo part of the install needs some sorting out.

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.
