I have recently disabled nautilus from showing up on my desktop. Now I can't seem to start nautilus. Starting it from gnome-terminal doesn't display anything, and it never shows, and it never terminates. View 5 RepliesI recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...
I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...).
All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.
My window manager: sawfish

with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with DBGL (DosBox Graphic Launcher), after installation through Yast I got the icons alright but when clicked they just bounce for some time and then nothing, the program DBGL doesn't start, while DosBox alone works o.k.
Running DBGL in Terminal gives me this:

Konsole (when in root) fails to start up after it is used once (i.e., opened, work performed, closed/terminated). Bouncing cursor does its thing on second and subsequent uses, but times out normally and Konsole window never appears. Stock install from DVD.

The Text Location bar is where you see the full path to the directory that you're viewing.But I can't set the default addressing to the Text Location Bar.What else should I do to get the text location bar (i.e. the full path) to be the default view in the address bar?

My first post on openSUSE, since migrating from Ubuntu (didn't like Unity!). I've installed the virtualization packages from YAST2 and when I attempt to run virt-manager, it crashes. The error is

Certain icons were missing from the desktop. not be able to open my Computer or network icon. the same error is coming again and again. even there is no menu on desktop except a few folders.
I have tried, and I think succeeded installing this font. Geneva Font It seems to work and scale fine in AbiWord and and OOwriter, but it does not display in firefox, it is horrible. The above link shows a sample which is really very bad at all levels of zoom. This site (I think this is the same problem) is also terrible, until I zoom to a very large size, when it smooths out. I recently installed kinternet from a repository and when I enter Menu -> Applications -> Internet, there is no kinternet application.

Sometimes when I boot openSuse 11.2, it only boots to runlevel 2 (console) I have to log in as root and enter init 5 to make kdm appear. Then I can log in normally, and everything works fine.

I have just done a fresh network install on SUSE on a new HP Proliant ML115 server. The install seemed to go OK, but on rebooting after the install I get a shell logon/prompt -- no GUI. Have tried reinstalling with the same result. If I try to run startkde I get a message that says "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server."
How do I resolve this?
I got an opensuse 10.2 on a aged desktop. Once start, it just stops at command line login prompt. I have to login and type 'startx' to get the GUI. Since I haven't used this computer for over half year. I couldn't remember what I did last time. Any tips for this problem?

My laptop is a Core 2 Centrino and i installed OpenSUSE 11.3 i586 on it recently. I tried to install the graphic card's driver using this instruction:ATI Installer HOWTO for openSUSE usersafter installation was done, i restarted the system but during the boot, where the openSUSE appears, the screen went black and nothing happened afterward untill i turned of the system manually.i tried again and same result, so i logged in with failsafe and un-installed those packages, now the system boots successfully, but it boots to the terminal instead of the desktop. i might have removed the X server package or something important.now that i have access to terminal and i can log in, i thought i can do something with it and solve it this way rather than re-installing the whole OS.he graphic card is :ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, if anyone knows how to the driver for this card, please let me know how to.
