Ubuntu :: FileZilla Not Opening Remote Files And Not Recognising The Default Editor Gedit?

May 26, 2010

I just started using FireFTP instead of FileZilla because I got fed up with FileZilla not opening remote files and not recognising the default editor Gedit.

I really want to use keyboard shortcuts with FireFTP, which is possible according to the help docs on-line, but there is no option to use shortcuts anywhere even having enabled FireFTP to open in a new window. I tried it in Shiretoko 3.59 and Firefox 3.18 with no luck.

I just tried removing FileZilla and it does not appear in my list of installed apps. It appears in the full list as uninstalled but when ticking the box to install gives this message. FileZilla FTP client cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type. I already have FileZilla..so how is that?

Ubuntu Servers :: From Filezilla FTP Server To Vsftpd - Configure?

Feb 21, 2011

I have used for a long time Filezilla FTP Server on a windows server, for multiple users in my company around the country.Lately the windows box died and I said let's try ubuntu server 9.10. I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox.Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd.How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

Slackware :: What's Your Favorite SQL Editor?

Nov 3, 2010

I've recently installed Slackware 13.1 and want do some work with a MySQL database. I've used SQL Navigator at work for a few years and want something similar for home. Maybe I've become spoiled but a good SQL editor is just as useful as a good IDE in my opinion.I tried to install MySQL workbench but there are some dependencies on GNOME that got in the way. I tried SQuirreL because it's written in java but wasn't too impressed, and couldn't get it to stop auto-committing (that could really cause a bad situation). RazorSQL looks nice but I don't want to anty up for the $70 license fee.

What are your favorite SQL editors for use on Slackware, and how do you use them?Also, if there is anyone who has successfully installed MySQL workbench on Slackware 13.1.

Slackware :: KDE Menu Editor: Changes Do Not Persist

Oct 9, 2010

Right click on the "K". Choose Menu Editor.Save changes. However, after that,some changes persist, other changes do not and, additionally, some unexpected folders magically appear on the menu (such as "Office-1, Office-2, etc.). Some folders I created never show on the right place (the main menu) but instead tend to persist on a different submenu (such as "Graphics"). If I move them out to the place I want, they immediatly show back in the wrong place. Regular KDE manuals I've seen do not mention this issue or how to go about fixing it (they just tell you to delete an item when you want to delete it, to save the configuration after you are done, etc). Maybe I should switch to Fluxbox immediately. I use Linux mostly for production and research, and all I expect from a GUI is to let me get things done.

Slackware :: Custom Built 2.6.37 Kernel And ACPI

Feb 12, 2011

I have a custom built 2.6.37 kernel where I have most of my devices compiled into the kernel. The only modules are related to nouveau (in case I want to go back to proprietary nvidia) and sound drivers. Everything seems to be running fine. However, in /proc/acpi, I'm missing a number of entries, such as thermal_zone/, dsdt, etc. I do have ac_adapter/, battery/, button/, event, processor/ and wakeup. I've gone through what I think is a very detailed review of my kernel config, and I can't find where I've missed something ACPI related. Here is my kernel config with the ACPI section.

Slackware :: Custom Kernel, Now System Is Unbootable?

Jun 26, 2011

I compiled my own custom kernel for the first time. I tinkered with different options, nothing to difficult. I actually didn't expect it to work the first time.

I had kept the original lilo boot config just in case something was to go wrong. Now when I try to boot the system, I always get a "VFS: cannot mount root system on (8,3)". I googled this and found that my kernel did not support my root filesystem (btrfs). So I made an initrd with btrfs kernel module, but it didn't help. I then got a string of errors about how /dev could not be mounted.

My question is two-fold. First, how come when I configure the system back to when it was first installed, it still won't boot? Im using the same kernel (2.6.37.6-smp). Second, how can I get myself out of this rut without reinstalling?

lilo.conf

Code:
lba32
append=" vt.default_utf8=0"
boot=/dev/sda
vga = normal
# Linux - Slackware
image = /boot/vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.37.6-smp
root = /dev/sda3
label = Linux
read-only

BTW, I have been maintenancing the system by chrooting into the device off of my slackware boot disk. Im on slack 13.37

Slackware :: Installation User Scripts To Custom Packages Selection

Apr 19, 2011

First time posting here, sort of long time slacker with some gaps in between... Anyway, I have a sort of question/feature request. First of all, I fully understand the KISS philosophy from Slackware. Story: I co-worker of my was looking for a Linux distro to install into a VM that he would be able to carry around in an USB memory from work to home. I suggested for him to try slackware. However, he has a limitation of ~2gb to the installation size, and he doesn't need most of the packages. With this in mind, I helped him select the more relevants one, but it was a pain to make an installation that both works AND attends the 2gb maximum limitation.

From that experience, and also having in mind the KISS philosophy from Slackware, comes my question/sugestion: why not provide an install option like "Custom Packages Script", that will load a single script file from a USB/mounted partition and install pre-selected packages that a person has selected and build the script from? This would allow anyone to build a custom Slackware installation and share it with the community.

Ubuntu :: Text Editor Column Editor And Regex Search/replace, Incrementing Number Insert?

Jul 25, 2011

On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

Slackware :: Custom Kernel And Acpi / Thermal Settings - Fan Running Constantly

Jun 5, 2010

this isn't so much slackware specific as it is general linux related, but using the default huge slackware kernel included with 13.1, acpi reports cpu temps of about 55 celsius i always like to run my own kernels though, and using the latest stable kernel, i have compiled one using what i believe is necessary for my hardware, and everything works as expected except that acpi reports my cpu temp as 80 celsius at idle, causing my fan to be running constantly

so without simply using the generic config included with slack in the newer kernel, what do you think might be causing the thermal issues? i used diff on the two configs and the output is over 5,000 lines, so thats not a huge help, and im really not even sure what to be looking for the cpu is an intel i7 720qm, so if anyone might know any specific settings for that processor type needed for acpi to interface with it properly that would be much obliged here is my config for potential review: [URL] also, if i disable acpi entirely, the fan operates as normal but i cannot get readings obviously

Slackware :: Custom Kernel Not Boot After Current Lastest Update / Sort It?

Mar 2, 2010

After the bunch of updates with current, my custom kernel (2.6.33) can't boot.

The error is:
/sbin/e2fsck: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda6

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

The /dev/sda6 is ext4 and is ok since it can boot with official huge smp kernel 2.6.33.

My custom kernel can boot before this bunch of updates in current.
What i missing in kernel?

Slackware :: Worth Changing Chost If System Built With Custom Prescott Cflags?

Oct 18, 2010

I already got all the benefits of optimization when I used (still using) my own CFLAGS CXXFLAGS right? So changing the chost won't do anything speed wise will it? If I used march=prescott when compiling everything am I ok to just forget about the chost value? It's not gonna change anything will it?

Fedora Installation :: Erratic Install Results W/initrd - Custom Spins With Custom Drivers - Modules?

Dec 28, 2009

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.

The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]

My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.

The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.

Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?

And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?

How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

Slackware :: How To Configure Touchpad

Dec 18, 2010

after several hours I've finally gotten slackware running! But the only thing I don't understand is how to configure the touchpad. In Ubuntu you can do it in the GUI, but I have no idea how to do it via Slackware.

I mostly want it to disable tap to click when I type, and enable horizontal and vertical scrolling. I've tried using synclient but that doesn't seem to work, and in any case I think that is only supposed to be a temporary fix anyway.

how to update packages I've installed? I installed wicd to use wireless for my laptop, but according to their website, it's best that I update it to the newest version because of some bug.

Slackware :: KDE 4.5 Bug In Configure Window Behavior

Oct 12, 2010

Has anyone noticed this bug in KDE 4.5? It started for me with the official 4.5.1 packages in -current, and is now continuing with Alien Bob's 4.5.2 packages. I don't think it happened with previous 4.5.0 builds I was using.

1) Right-click title bar, select "Configure Window Behavior"
2) the "Desktop Effects" option is selected by default, but displays the "Window Decorations" screen instead.
3) Clicking on another option on the left will show appropriate screen.
4) Finally clicking on "Desktop Effects" will show the proper screen to configure effects.

[URL]. [In the screenshot above, you can see "Desktop Effects" pre-selected, but displaying the wrong screen.]. Bug still shows up with a brand new user account with fresh .kde. My searching for other bug reports has turned up nothing, so I'm wondering if this is unique to slackware for whatever reason. I'm running slackware64-current, up to date, with NVIDIA binary drivers.
