what is the configuration file responsible for the X system !!! i did not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the X server was pretty good and i can open it through "startx" command.i created xorg.config by "xorgsetup" program but i could not feel any change. i wanna reconfigure my display driver to be sure it's functioning at maximum performance.
View 8 RepliesI went back to Suse 11.2, it comes with the 'nv' driver for my NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (64 MB) and I'm getting some slow performance on browser display and sometimes video playing. Not always, I recently saw a 2 hr long movie on Blue Ray resolution, so the problem is not hardware, it's software. I saw several links here on how to install other drivers and a 1-click install link on this page but my question is, since this is an old card... which driver is the best for this card ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedDoes slackware run slower on amd cpus compared to intel? I just read some articles on compilers optimized for intel cpus via the 'GenuineIntel' check. CPUs' not bearing intel cpuid will be run in non-optimized mode. It's part of Intel & AMD anti-trust settlement.

Since I upgraded to Slackware64 13.1 my system feels slower than before (Slackware64 13.0).I paid attention to the documentation (changes_and_hints.txt, readmes etc.) regarding the update. The only thing I changed is, that I used the KDE-4.4.4 packages of AlienBob instead of the KDE-4.4.3 packages of Slackware.
But since AlienBob at his blog wrote, "Although it seems (by looking at the changelog between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4) that there were no spectacular updates in the latest stable KDE Software Compilation, I got some feedback that 4.4.4 does feel �snappier� than the 4.4.3 which is part of Slackware 13.1.", I thought it would be a good idea to use these packages.
I also recognized a few crashes in KDE, which I didn't have before so often. Therefore I moved the .kde to .kde_bak and configured kde new. This improved the behaviour regarding the crashes, but it still seems not that stable to me like the KDE 4.2 in Slackware64 13.0.Did anyone recognize similar problems after the upgrade, or can give some hints how to solve it?
Just want to know if solid state drive supported by slackware 13.1? Coz I want it to try to boost my server performance???

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system is (and was) Slackware 13 64bit I had DFI LanParty NF4 with AMD Athlon64, 2GB (dual channel) of RAM and Gigabyte GeForce 250 1GB. Now I have Asus P6X58D Premium with Intel i7 960, 6GB (triple) of RAM and the same graphics card + 3 internal SATA hard disks (no partitions change). I replaced hardware and noticed a performance drop.
In text console it looks like slow screen refresh. Also visible during boot when next line of text appears with a delay. I can even see as midnight commander blue window unfolds from the top of the screen when I start it. Switching from text to X takes more time. File copying takes more time. I have Xp guest in VmWare Workstation. Windows runs noticeably faster. I have reinstalled Slackware and changed (in BIOS) default IDE mode for SATA to AHCI. Still slower then with previous hardware. Maybe I am too oversensitive now, but I think moving around in BIOS is not smooth either.
we bought a dual 12-core Opteron machine (Supermicro H8DGi board). Installed Slackware 13.37 and performed some few tests. We observed that performance quickly degraded as the box became loaded. For instance, a lonely task may took "t", but when running 24 of them at the same time (fully loaded box), it may took 2 to 3 times longer. From some test we did (tinkering with BIOS, moving memory modules, etc) we came to the conclusion the problem was due to a terrible memory managment. Finally we solved the problem by recompiling the kernel and taking the .config file from OpenSuse. Thus, there must be something to be tweaked in the standard Slackware .config file
View 8 Replies View RelatedI installed SalixOS on my laptop just to play with when I'm bored. My laptop is nothing special, it's a couple of years old has a pentium dual core t2390 at 1.86Ghz and 3 GB ddr2 RAM with Intel video.
I then have a beast i7 920 clocked to 3331Mhz 6GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GT220. Full screen ..... at 720p is fine unless I move the mouse, then the whole picture freezes. Persistant mouse movement will freeze the screen for a few minutes. This machine runs both slack64 current and slack13 32 bits.
The slack box does much better with 32 bit flash than 64, but it still doesn't do nearly as well as the laptop.
With Salix and Slack being so close to each other supposedly I can't figure out why the hardware seems to be irrelevant. The only thing I can think of would be the video codecs installed by Salix, whereas I built a bunch of codecs myself for Slack.
Now i have 64 bit computer i installed Slackware 23 64 bit on it. i followed Alien Bob's multi lib how to and installed needed libraries one by one. everything is fine expect wine configure script can not find some libraries needed: libgsm, libmpg123, libopenal, libxcomposite.
I have already installed 32 bit compatibility packages and used /etc/profile.d/32bit.sh as recommended in Alien Bob's howto. configure -- does not really list anything for pointing for libraries.
I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

Looking for a newb-type step by step process for configuring ubuntu to 1) recognize both the onboard video card as well as the PCI graphics card and 2) how to set up three displays with separate desktops (able to mouse-over from screen to screen). So far the 20+ hours searching online has yielded excessively complex instructions, inappropriate instructions, or ancient posts. Is this config even possible? Again, I am learning so the instructions need to be very deliberate. I can't configure the monitor. and the display.
I've tried with both the built in display configure and the Nvidia one. Can't choose 1600x900 on either one.
I either can't see all the display on the monitor, or it takes on some weird panning mode and looks like the display is about 2500x1500 or something.
Here's the xorg.conf file. Clearly it does not see the new monitor and the modes are wrong. These settings are for the previous monitor. How Can I fix this so that my display works properly? Thanks.

This is much the same as a menu object available in Gnome, except with the latter you could clear recent files for security or privacy purposes - you cannot do this in Unit.I have found that if you drag a file from the 'recent' section in the Unity Files & Folders object to Trash it doesn't just delete the shortcut - it deletes the target as well.
It is not at all clear if and how you can configure the File & Folders and the Applications objects to display what you want rather than the default, and the inability to quickly and safely clear recently opened items is something I think is in need of a fix.

At work, we have a linux machine which is shared among the members of my team. Each of us runs an XServer on our desktop, which allows us to launch XClients (xterm, debuggers, etc) on the linux machine.We all are using X11 forwarding feature with SSH. I personally run all shell sessions behind screen because I like to be able to detach if needed. We've seen issues when the $DISPLAY variable gets crossed between different users. Let me outline a series of events:
1. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
2. user1 launches a screen
3. user1 loses connection to linux machine (eg. desktop reboot)
4. user2 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
5. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:11.0
6. user1 resumes screen from previous login, but in this screen $DISPLAY=localhost:10.0.
7. user1's X apps get displayed on user2's desktop!
I assume someone must of encountered this before. Are there any known solutions? Is there a way to configure screen, so that when a session is resumed it inherits the $DISPLAY?
I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.
i tried following the readme file included in the driver of the usb network adapter but seems its not exact.
any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.
I am new to this forum. I am a both rhel5 and fedora user.I can not configure my Samsung syncmaster 632nw monitor to display full screen at 1360X768.There is huge blank space on left and right portion of the monitor.The maximun resolution is 1024*768 and minimum is 640*480.

I have installed SW13 and I cannot seem to be able to configure my display resolution. Under windows I have it configure as 1440by900 pixels, colors = 32bit, chip = intel 965 express. Under SW the resolution = 800by600. I have try to change the resolution size but have not been able to do it. I try to run the xorgconfig command but is not installed on the computer.
View 9 Replies View Relatedafter several hours I've finally gotten slackware running! But the only thing I don't understand is how to configure the touchpad. In Ubuntu you can do it in the GUI, but I have no idea how to do it via Slackware.
I mostly want it to disable tap to click when I type, and enable horizontal and vertical scrolling. I've tried using synclient but that doesn't seem to work, and in any case I think that is only supposed to be a temporary fix anyway.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am using a 64-bit Slackware 13.1 distro (I chose 64 by mistake, to be honest, as I know there's less trouble with a 32-bit distro) and I have some problems with my consoles (in text mode). After changing the runlevel in ininittab to graphic mode (4), I can't enter any of my consoles. Actually, only ctrl+alt F1 shows some output, regarding the graphic mode (I'm currently using KDE4, the default for slackware 13.1) and F6 is the only normal consoles I have access to. However, if I log out and log in (with another user, maybe) there's no output anywhere (not on F1, neither on F6).
