Ubuntu :: FileZilla Not Opening Remote Files And Not Recognising The Default Editor Gedit?

May 26, 2010

I just started using FireFTP instead of FileZilla because I got fed up with FileZilla not opening remote files and not recognising the default editor Gedit.

I really want to use keyboard shortcuts with FireFTP, which is possible according to the help docs on-line, but there is no option to use shortcuts anywhere even having enabled FireFTP to open in a new window. I tried it in Shiretoko 3.59 and Firefox 3.18 with no luck.

I just tried removing FileZilla and it does not appear in my list of installed apps. It appears in the full list as uninstalled but when ticking the box to install gives this message. FileZilla FTP client cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type. I already have FileZilla..so how is that?

If I'm in a terminal window, and I open a file by typing eg :

It opens as a blank document... I know it has text in it though!

I've tried with other files and also with nano so it's not just a problem with a particular file.

How do I view the current contents of the file so I can then edit it?

Ubuntu :: Remote Opening Files Without Using Own CPU?

I have a laptop that's not up to par with opening 1080p video. I do however have a PC that can. I've connected my laptop to my TV as a media center. I can remotely access files from the PC to play but because the laptop's resources are being used to play it I still encounter some slowdown. Is there any way to remote access the other PC while using its resources to play the video?

Software :: Opening MS Word Does Not Recognize .docx Files By Default

Jun 21, 2011

The OpenOffice word processor can open and read Microsoft Word files containing XML (.docx) perfectly well, but it--or KDE--does not seem to recognize a .docx by default. To open one with OpenOffice, I have to manually tell OpenOffice to open it, by going through the "open with" option on the right-click menu and specifying soffice. That's obviously not a problem, but it's a minor curiosity. Haven't Word XML files been around long enough that KDE and OpenOffice should recognize them immediately?

I'm not quite sure which to blame this on--KDE or OpenOffice--but KDE seems more logical. And is this a small limitation of KDE 3.5? because I'm still using 3.5. (I'm trying to switch over to Trinity, but have not made the switch yet.)

Ubuntu :: Not Recognising Files On Mp3 Player ?

Mar 5, 2010

I have some mp3 files that I want to sync with my girlfriend's mp3 player (Sandisk Sansa 4GB) using Rhythmbox, but for some reason no songs come up in Rhythmbox. I then checked the device's filesystem itself. The directory structure is correct, but there are no files in any of the folders. However, Dolphin reports that about 1.6 GB are free, which is about correct based on how much music is actually on the device already. And I've already synced this exact device with Windows Media Player before, and it worked fine. This was a problem both in 8.10 and, now, in 9.10.

On top of that, just now the Sansa disappeared both in Rhythmbox and Dolphin, as if it was unplugged. But it says on the Sansa's screen "Connected" and is apparently charging. I tried unplugging and re-connecting, but Ubuntu still refuses to recognise it.

If I can't get this to work, I'll likely just transfer the songs over the network to my Windows PC and use Windows Media Player, since that seems to work fine.

Ubuntu :: More Direct Text Editor Replacement For Gedit

Jul 23, 2011

I use a text editor mostly for opening up and editing ascii text files that are used by the programs I write. For example, manually editing comma separated value data files.

I've been using Gedit for this, and it's been very frustrating because I started noticing new-line characters (hex 0A) were creeping into my CSV ascii data. It turns out that Gedit has an undocumented "feature" where it silently introduces a new line character at the end of any file you edit, and there is no way to turn this feature off! See this bug report. I installed GVim, and a quick test shows that GVim does the same thing.

I would like a recommendation for a more straightforward text editor, which:

1) Doesn't add extra bytes to the file (or if it does, this behavior can be turned off).
2) Allows you to force ASCII when opening a file (sometimes Gedit will make an incorrect assumption about encoding because of a stray non-printable character)

More advanced features would be nice, like regular expressions for search and replace, but I need this basic functionality first.

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Make Default Paper Size Stick In Gedit?

I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.
