Slackware :: How To Configure VNC Server For 13.1
May 16, 2011
I'm trying to find a VNC server for Slackware 13.1. I was searching around a little and I found that there are quite many. The most popular for slackware were tightVNC, x11vnc. I think in Slackware 13.1 is by default installed the libvnc but I can't find documentation on how to configure it.

It seems my sendmail (running in slackware 13.0) cannot send out emails correctly. I guess I need to tell it what is the smtp server to use. And, I heard, gmail's smtp server is available to use for this purpose. How to configure my sendmail this way?

Now i have 64 bit computer i installed Slackware 23 64 bit on it. i followed Alien Bob's multi lib how to and installed needed libraries one by one. everything is fine expect wine configure script can not find some libraries needed: libgsm, libmpg123, libopenal, libxcomposite.
I have already installed 32 bit compatibility packages and used /etc/profile.d/32bit.sh as recommended in Alien Bob's howto. configure -- does not really list anything for pointing for libraries.

i tried following the readme file included in the driver of the usb network adapter but seems its not exact.
any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

I have got a running mail server on CentOS5.4 Final using Zimbra free edition. . Assume that domain is organization.com.local And it is running fine with users created and bugzilla running on the same machine can send mails using this server. But it can obviously send messages to the internal users. There is this option to configure it to use external mail server to send mails outside the network but my external smtp server needs an authentication.Is it possible to configure it this way to use my external server to send mails from internal domain to say gmail?

after several hours I've finally gotten slackware running! But the only thing I don't understand is how to configure the touchpad. In Ubuntu you can do it in the GUI, but I have no idea how to do it via Slackware.
I mostly want it to disable tap to click when I type, and enable horizontal and vertical scrolling. I've tried using synclient but that doesn't seem to work, and in any case I think that is only supposed to be a temporary fix anyway.
how to update packages I've installed? I installed wicd to use wireless for my laptop, but according to their website, it's best that I update it to the newest version because of some bug.

Has anyone noticed this bug in KDE 4.5? It started for me with the official 4.5.1 packages in -current, and is now continuing with Alien Bob's 4.5.2 packages. I don't think it happened with previous 4.5.0 builds I was using.
1) Right-click title bar, select "Configure Window Behavior"
2) the "Desktop Effects" option is selected by default, but displays the "Window Decorations" screen instead.
3) Clicking on another option on the left will show appropriate screen.
4) Finally clicking on "Desktop Effects" will show the proper screen to configure effects.
[URL]. [In the screenshot above, you can see "Desktop Effects" pre-selected, but displaying the wrong screen.]. Bug still shows up with a brand new user account with fresh .kde. My searching for other bug reports has turned up nothing, so I'm wondering if this is unique to slackware for whatever reason. I'm running slackware64-current, up to date, with NVIDIA binary drivers.

I've recently updated my Slackware 13.1 system to the Slackware current. Although I have created my "initrd" image without specifying the "-u" option to "mkinitrd" it still starts up "udev".
That is causing me some difficulty because I am using "dmraid" to detect my RAID arrays. I had created my own device names such as "/dev/sdr2" for my root partition. With 13.1 I had no problem, since "udev" was not started by the "initrd" unless the "-u" option was provided. The current version seems to start up "udev" even without that option.
Is there a way to disable "udev" in the "initrd", or is there a way to specify custom "udev" rules for an "initrd"? I tried placing a "10-local.rules" file in the "etc/udev/rules.d" directory of the "initrd-tree" but that file had no effect on the device names generated by "udev" during the "initrd".
Here is my script that creates the "initrd".
Code:
ROOTDEVNAME="/dev/sdr2"# Name of root device
LINUXVER="2.6.35.7-smp"# Linux modules version
CLIBVER="2.12.1"# C library version
ROOTDIR="/boot/initrd-tree"# Location of root filesystm
[code]....
It will be helpful for me to understand "udev" issues related to an "initrd" because I will eventually try to use "mdadm" instead of "dmraid". So far I have only been able to get my system to boot from the RAID array using "dmraid" and I often run into new problems when I update Linux. Still, Slackware has proven to have the best support for booting from my RAID array because of the user community, documentation and flexibility.

So I don't like the new Amarok as much as the 1.4 version, so I want to install the older release. I download the source files, extract it and go into the directory. I type ./configure and recieve an error about kde-config not being installed, but "ln kde4-config kde-config" (or something like that) solved that problem. But now I encounter this problem after ./configure:
Code:
I already have a version of Qt installed (it's necessary for KDE, is it not?), but it's not between 3.3 and 4.0. I've read online about how if you install both the 3.3 and the version included on Slackware 13.1 of Qt there would be problems. I also read that you could find the necessary Qt files in the sources discs, but I'm not sure what files to install:
Code:
This is Slackware 13.1, by the way.
Do I have to shamefully resign my pride to Amarok 2.3 or can I install 1.4 in some way? And if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading and potentially responding.

From KDE i configured laptop's screen to be inactive and the external monitor at resolution 1680 X 1050. When i boot and enter KDE both monitors are activated, ican't understand their resolution. Then, just when i enter system configuration-monitor-monitor configuration the laptop's monitor automaticly turns off. Then i configure the external to 1680 X 1050 resolution. This happens every time i have to enter slackware. How to setup my xorg.conf file. You can see it below:

I'm configuring sendmail that runs on Linux Slackware but find some difficulties to do some quick startup due to its complexity and massive documentation. Suppose I want to configure a sendmail that can serve 2 domains:
ethereal1m.no-ip.com
ethereal2m.no-ip.com
I use noip2 client software to connect with noip server that translates the dynamic IP addressed domains, setups POP, and does forwarding. By having 2 domains, I want to able to send email between admin@ethereal1m.no-ip.com and admin@ethereal2m.no.ip.com;therefore, my machine acts as both a server and a client. How can I setup sendmail so that it acts as both server and client? How to register email address and its domain on sendmail?

What I did :I've downloaded virtualbox-ose & virtualbox-kernel on slackbuilds.org After running ./virtualbox-xxx.Slackbuild i've installed both packages (first ose then kernel)
The problem I get :
When I run a virtual machine, Vbox tell me to launch /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup (or sthing like that) But neither /etc/init.d/vboxdrv nor /etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv are on my hard drive after the installation.So is there any specific file to configure VBox .. ? Or is there an other way to install VBox under slackware ?

I'm running Slackware-13.1 on my laptop. Connection to my network is via wlan0, a cable in most cases not pluged in.When starting the system the first attempt to configure the network is via eth0, which ends with dhcpcd timing out since there is no cable pluged in. Afterwards wlan0 is set up properly.
I have installed ifplugd, which is a daemon who connects to ethernet only if a cable is connected. With Gentoo this works out of the box. With Slackware ifplugd is started after rc.inet1 (probably). So the the system still tries to connect via ethernet before connecting to the wireless network.
I have also installed wicd.How can I manage that wlan0 is prefered over eth0?I noticed that neither wicd nor ifplugd belong to the default full installation of Slackware and therefore assume, there must be a solution which meets my requirements without even one of both programs.The laptop is only used at home. Wireless connection is normaly used. I need eth0 only in a case of emergency.

how to configure my customized Slim DM to overwrite the installed /etc/rc.d/rc.4 script with the one I put in my slim build from source.However, it just installs it as rc.4.new and not rc.4 why?would it be easier to instead configure the rc.4 that initially gets installed?if so, what slack pkg has the /etc/rc.d/* folder??I'm doing this with Absolute 13.0.8 install cd as its installed size is too big for my lappy hdd and it comes with both gdm and xdm and I want slim.
So, I removed many many pkgs from install iso, got it down to 370MB and only problem is after install my rc.4 is in /etc/rc.d but its named rc.4.new and there is also the original rc.4 thats my only issue
