I'm getting a netbook with no cd/dvd drive but it boots off of usb, so I've made a slackware 13 usb stick to start the install. I also have a usb hard drive I was going to copy the packages to. I'm wondering... should I boot with the usb install stick and then connect the usb hard drive afterwards?

I get it installed just fine, except, when I go to boot into it, I get a kernel-panic --error message. I am sure its the kernel and that I need to some-how set up a initrd, however, I am a little rusty these days and can not quite seem how to do it. I have a Western Digital Passport external (USB) hard-drive. I will joy-in all help, and, I'll keep looking.

The intent is to keep Windows while learning Linux, and all I have to do is insert the USB drive when needed. I am using cfdisk and have no difficulty getting to the point where it wants me to partition the hhd. However, whether I have the USB connected or not, it will always present the HDA for partitioning. How do I tell cfdisk to recognize and set partitions on the USB hard drive? (i.e.) What is the command?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently had a laptop die on me. I, of course, then to recover the hard drive. I wanted to install slackware to a partition on my drive, so I can have a linux distro with me( also I have a FAT32 partition for shared space) I have a Slackware 13.1 disk one (which i need, since I don't need a graphical environment or anything), and proceedd to follow setup program. I have a 5GB '/' partition, a 10GB '/home' partition, and a 2GB swap partition. My ROOT partition is bootable. The setup program seemed to complete succesfully, but it won't boot. When I choose to boot from my hard drive (in the bios), it reverts to the slackware disk, if present, or the standard windows drive.
I installed LILO to the superblock of my external, because according to the setup the MBR option installs to "The MBR of your first hard drive", and I wasn't sure if that was right, since my first hard drive is my windows one. Since i'm not even seeing LILO, I think it has to do with installing to the superblock. I want to be able to boot a basic linux distro if needed from whatever computer I want. I'm not sure if slackware was the right choice, but it was one that I had worked with installing before, and knewthat you didn't necasarraly have to instal all the graphics stuff. I just want a shell. Sorry if my question sounds retarted, I'm new to the whole "Multiple drives, and operating systems" thing
I have installed Isadora on 8gb USB drive. getting to like this OS.a lot. Problem is I will soon be running out of space and lack speed. I would like to transfer all my data and downloads to my hard drive permanently. Can I make my memory stick installable?

It boots up the Installer boot menu and asks me if i want to run Ubuntu from the USB or Save it to hard drive. I select save to hard drive but when i turn the pc off and take out the flashdrive Ubuntu does not stay on the machine?

The software appears to load just fine.. standard install but when I reboot the box .. believing it should just boot from the hard drive I get the message no OS installed. I've adjusted the bios and the drive order and I have changed to install parameters for APC or APIC.... you know what I mean... doesn't matter NO JOY IN MUD VILLE.

I burned the live version of OpenSUSE 11.3 (Gnome, 32bit) to a CD to test the compatibility of an HP Pavilion p6510f. Although Xubuntu 10.4 booted up fine, OpenSUSE did not. A message about RAID would appear (too briefly to read) and then the computer would reboot.I checked in the BIOS and found that the SATA drive has 3 modes: IDE, RAID and AHCI. The hard drive was set to RAID.
When I changed the hard drive mode to IDE, I was able to run the OpenSUSE live CD; but the change ruined my Windows installation. Windows doesn't boot under IDE or RAID mode. (I have reset the mode to RAID and am restoring the Windows installation.) Is there an option/argument that I can pass to the kernel so that OpenSUSE will work under RAID mode? (Since Xubuntu 10.4 was able to do it, I'm assuming OpenSUSE should be able to.)
I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.
I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

My question is how to create a usb boot stick or recovery boot stick so that a can su lilo back to its configuration, so that I can select windows or linux on loader prompt(lilo)...?
After using slackpkg to update to -current on a new slack(32) install I was greeted with kernel panic "can't mount root fs" on reboot.
It was looking in the wrong place. I thought I answered yes and slackpkg would run lilo for me when it was done with the upgrade but perhaps I misunderstood.
I had my handy dandy USB boot stick so I set the bios and booted from USB. OK fine, I pointed to the correct location (hda1) and voila.
a 64bit kernel... The machine in question is a 2004 vintage celeron notebook
To my question: Is there a way I can point the loader to another kernel?
One last piece of the puzzle, the dvd drive is bad and I don't (yet) have a PXE server or even another linux box.

I have a 120G ide hard drive that I need to add to my computer.

I know there is a way to make an initrid and to use the uuid identifications for the drives, and even use labels instead of the long uuid's, but I'm unfamiliar with this process, so I was hoping somebody that's done this before might point me in the right direction.
I decided to use my 16gb usb drive as a boot stick for a new opensuse install by doing what the doc said to do i.e. "dd if=USBdrive of=ISO bs=4M" which worked great and all, but now I want the drive to do something else besides act like a cd with openSUSE on it. I can't figure out how to delete or write anything to it, because it's now read-only. Remounting hasn't worked but it's possible i'm not understanind how the mount command works, but I have tried "mount -rw /USB /MOUNTPLACE" and also with a couple of different filesystem types like usbfs & vfat.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI try to install Slackware to my IDE hard drive and boot first from Slackware DVD. After I loaded huge.s kernel, and tried to partition the hard drive using fdisk by entering "fdisk /dev/hda", I found out that the partition size is max to 3 Gigs instead of 80 Gigs.
I think the kernel is looking at my boot disk, which is around 3 Gigs. How can I make so that it looks at my IDE drive instead at my boot drive? Is there any manual that shows me how to install Linux from scratch this means I want to wipe out all my hard disk and install Slackware Linux there?
I have minor problem with upgrading a hard drive. I am running an old pentium lll with two hard drives. On the first hard drive I have two partitions of around 90GB each. On the first partition is installed winXP and on the second partition I have Suse 10.3, both booted by grub and living happily side by side. My second hard drive (which is formatted for windows is only 4GB.
My problem arises when I try to replace the 4GB with a 80Gb hard drive. When I disconnect the 4GB drive the system fails to boot up and complains with error 21.
My friend gave me his old computer but he kept the hard drive, I have a computer with a 200 gb hard drive. could I partition the hard drive and have the computer my friend gave me access the other partition without having to take the hard drive out and connect it to the other computer?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi am able to connect other thumb drives and other flash drives to my laptop and they run fine on xubuntu but when i try to connect my 80 gigs external hard drive, it displays the following error message and shows nothing but an empty window of the hard drive with no contents of it: ERROR:"Failed to open directory "This IS RJ's".Error stating file '/media/This IS RJ's/xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso': Input/output error."
where "this is RJ's" is my hard drives label and the "xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" is a file i believe inside the drive. ( is it causing the problem?)this external hard disk is working fine on windows xp.
