I have installed Isadora on 8gb USB drive. getting to like this OS.a lot. Problem is I will soon be running out of space and lack speed. I would like to transfer all my data and downloads to my hard drive permanently. Can I make my memory stick installable?
View 3 RepliesThis is my first even moderately successful venture with linux, I had a virus ridden HD which I formatted, and then installed Mint distro. I then shut down, removed the HD and turned my desktop back on. I then receive the Error 15 notification while booting, and don't know how to solve this problem. I've tried sudo update-grub, but I get a notification that the terminal can't find it. Would it be safe to delete anything concerning the GRUB from my primary OS system files?

I have installed a new hard drive and now wan to import the ubuntu installation on the new hard drive. What is the easiest way of doing this? It boots up the Installer boot menu and asks me if i want to run Ubuntu from the USB or Save it to hard drive. If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s. But if I copy a file off my secondary internal drive (40 gig seagate formatted to ntfs) it transfers full speed (25-30 mb/s) Its also very slow transfering between internal hard drives (again, no more than 5 mb/s) I checked and as far as i can tell both drives are running in DMA mode. Any reason my primary seems to be causing this bottleneck? it seems to preform fine otherwise (as it is the drive with my ubuntu installation on it)

OR

I'm getting a netbook with no cd/dvd drive but it boots off of usb, so I've made a slackware 13 usb stick to start the install. I also have a usb hard drive I was going to copy the packages to. I'm wondering... should I boot with the usb install stick and then connect the usb hard drive afterwards?

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
I am using an embedded platform in which I have connected an external harddisk (/dev/sda). The SCSI driver is present and I am using the SG_IO interface for performing the SMART commands with the Hard Disk. (Unfortunately not all the HDIO ioclts are present. So I opted for the SG_IO ioctl). But the data transfer (reading/write data from/to sector) is not working with the SG_IO ioctls. So I searched for some other options. Later in one of the places, I found that we can actually mount the /dev/sda to some mount point in /mnt and then make a XFS file system (mkfs.xfs) of this.
And then we can create the directories and do file operations on this mounted directory. Here the simple read/write systems calls can be used for this. I was thinking about this implementation. But I am confused how I can map the actual LBA (Logical Block Address) to the device file offset. I mean if I want to write to the sector 5, there will be a LBA for it. So I can do lseek on my device and then write the data there. So how the mapping between LBA and device file offset can be calculated.
I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

I already checked the synaptic for the program and the box is not checked, meaning that it (fdupes) is not installed.
I probably have not done any serious programming for 20 years, not counting a little HTML.
I stumbled onto an old FREESPIRE disk my bro sent me several years back -- and tried installing it on a Sony Vaio PCG FRV 28 I had crashed a few years back. The Sony bios is still aboard, but old enough to not have USB "booting" as part of the boot menu. I don't even know if one can easily hack into the BIOS on an old sony Vaio but changing the BIOS would solve lot of problems.
Does anyone have any ideas or certain knowledge on rewriting or modifying the Master Boot Code or an idea on making my USB [with Ubuntu or any other Linux implementation visible] and bootable to the bios on powerup?

I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.
