I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed xp at the main hdd. It has 3 partitions. Then I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on the slave hdd. When I boot, it doesn't recognize kubuntu. When I searched at My PC in XP, didn't recognized the slave hdd. I switched the hdd (slave to master and viceversa) and it didn't go well either.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a fully operational PXE boot server, the client boots up and begins the setup process however, fails to detect the hard disk, I have tried with ubuntu 8.10, 9.10 and 10.10 and none of them will see my hard disk, I boot to the cd and it sees the hard disks with no problem, so apparently the pxe boot server isnt serving up the neccesary drivers or something to detect my hard disks properly. They are just IDE drives and like I said, regular cd install detects my drives just fine.So if anyone here has any information that may help shed some light on this issue I would be so grateful

So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have got a very strange boot problem. But first: I have openSUSE 11.4 with kde installed. I have the amd64 dual core cpu and 2 hard disks. I was able to boot from both of those disks (on the second disk I have openSUSE 11.2 in case something goes wrong with the first disk). Then I decided to install openSUSE 11.4 from DVD to a usb key (just like I would to a hard disk). I succeeded. I did not involve any partition of the hard disks in this install. But now I can not boot anymore from any of my both hard disks although bios finds them it did before. After bios I get the following message: Loading stage 1.5 error 21.
Error 21 means: Selected disk does not exist. This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system But I am still able to boot from usb key. I have even modified the menu.lst from the usb key to boot openSUSE 11.4 from the first hard disk. This works fine. I have also tried to install grub again on my first hard disk with grub.install.unsupported and with yast2. But installation stops with an error message like "hard disk not found by bios".
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

I'm just curious - why do all linux distros (all I've seen) run their periodic disk checks during boot? I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.
View 5 Replies View Relatedupon installing 4 2TB drives, my server will not boot. I have tried booting from a slackware 11 dvd and passing these boot paramaters:
huge26.s root=/dev/sda1 noinitrd ro in addition to just trying to boot from the DVD using the huge26.s kernel. the kernel starts to load and says "Ready." Then sits there with a flashing cursor... The problem only exists with the new 2TB drives installed. I never had any problems when I had 750GB drives installed. Also, everything works fine if I boot from the DVD using "huge26.s root=/dev/sda1 noinitrd ro" as boot paramaters, and insert the 4 2TB drives (hot add) after the system starts booting.
I have also tried booting from a backtrack 3 cd but experience the same problem (boot halt after loading initrd)
I have a PC with 4 harddisks and one ssd drive, presently PC boots from the 1st harddisk and other harddisks (sometimes 1, 2 or 3, depends upon the requirement) are used for the storage. Now i want to boot the PC from SSD and use the other harddisks for the storage only. My problem is that when system boots it takes 1st harddisk as sda and SSD as sdb, if i am using only one harddisk, and if i use 2 harddisk it takes sdc as SSD. So i am not able to give fix boot point in menu.lst file, if i wish to use root filesystem from SSD.I am using 2.6.33.7 kernel and grub bootloader. I have tried using initrd with udev but not able to include and start udev properly in initrd. I am trying to boot from UUID or LABEL, but no success. Am i missing something in kernel to get the UUID or LABEL.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI Installed Ubuntu 9.04 with XP theme. Then I installed Picasa and I have pictures on a 2nd hard disk. When I restart the PC Picasa doesn't see the 2nd drive. The 2nd HDD is mounted under /media/disk and clicking on the "My computer" icon (this is XP theme), I see the 2nd hdd. Now, I have to add this disk to Picasa again for it to scan the pictures. I don't want to do this on a regular basis.

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
I have seagate 40G IDE PATA hard-disk, 1.5G RAM and would like to extend another 40G hard-disk manufactured by Maxtor. I've Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP on different partitions.will it be OK if i extend hard disks by different manufacturer and are there any risk of disk failure probably in the future.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwell yesterday I upgraded my karmic to lynx. So far so good, overall much improved plus I love the new theme. Now the problem, I share my Firefox/Thunderbird profile (stored in my secondary HD) with WinXP (dual boot box). Since karmic, before I opened Firefox/Thunderbird, I had to mount the 2ndary HD which of course prompted me for a password and then everything worked fine. In case I forgot to mount the disk then Firefox popped the following msg: Firefox is either opened or in use.Now, lucid strangely mounts my HD without a password, more peculiarly I have r-w-e permissions and on top of that Firefox/Thunderbird gives me the silly msg!
Tried to unmount/mount back but still no password. I end up believing that this Firefox hesitation to start (based on karmic experience) is related with the password thing...or not?

It boots until the music sounds, and the login screen is supposed to appear, then it just locks up. The strange part is that both the installed version and the USB ubuntu live version fail at the same point. I even tried two versions of Ubuntu live on USB. Windows 7 however works fine. I think something must have happened to the hardware That will not load ubuntu,but will load windows About the only thing I did different on my last session was to install wine and then install Textpad in wine.

However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I had previously run the distro. through the CD, without harming my old partition. On doing so the system consistently reported my Toshiba ATA 120 gig hard disk had multiple bad sectors and was failing. As a true end user (who mucks only when necessary with the CLI) I just figured writing over the partition would end the failure. To be sure I ran Memtest8.66 v2.11 from the LiveCD; everything checked out fine. So I installed KK.

This is a Toshiba Satellite A105 with a 200 gH 1gig Pentium M. When I boot the liveCD I get this trial environment that works fine. When I try installing from it I can even see that I'm writing over the previous, whole 9.10 partition I created this afternoon. Regardless when I boot from HDD I get that weird letter j..
I've checked on line for boot issues, and the forum too, but so far haven't seen an issue booting from the HDD, especially when the distro. is already loaded. What am I missing here, and how do I install it from a live CD environment?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed an OS on the second hard-disk/partition3 (/dev/sdb3; OS was FreeBSD). Added the entry and when i boot: nothing. I choose the OS from grub's menu, the list of choices vanishes, the background image stays, and there it hangs. It hangs until i hit: ctrl+alt+backspace. I have thought: to hell with it, and installed Debian/Lenny. Same problem (OH!).
I also installed the boot-loader to the second disk (/dev/sdb), hit F11 after the BIOS-screen and chosen the second hard-disk to boot from: a similar problem. It hangs, and the keyboard is "dead". I am clueless what to check for (i checked the general culprits, but with UUID its all a bit of a mess. I would say it looks good, but wouldn't bet on it) Anyone ever heard of something like that? Without error message its not easy to use the amazing Google. I do a bit of grub-troubleshooting, usually it works, but usually i get error-messages.

I'd like to move my existing Ubuntu installation from my hard disk (/dev/sda1) to a USB stick. How do I copy the data from HD to USB? dd is obviously not the right option since the HD is 320GB and the USB stick only 16GB. However, only 3.5GB are used so this makes perfect sense.And it would make my HTPC even more silent |-)
