Slackware :: How To Configure Customized Slim DM To Overwrite Installed
Feb 4, 2010
how to configure my customized Slim DM to overwrite the installed /etc/rc.d/rc.4 script with the one I put in my slim build from source. However, it just installs it as rc.4.new and not rc.4 why?would it be easier to instead configure the rc.4 that initially gets installed?if so, what slack pkg has the /etc/rc.d/* folder??I'm doing this with Absolute 13.0.8 install cd as its installed size is too big for my lappy hdd and it comes with both gdm and xdm and I want slim.
So, I removed many many pkgs from install iso, got it down to 370MB and only problem is after install my rc.4 is in /etc/rc.d but its named rc.4.new and there is also the original rc.4 thats my only issue

I'm trying out slim - the login replacement for gdm/kdm/xdm. I find that when I use the special supplied Slackware theme, I can't see the cycling of the session names as I repeatedly hit F1. But when I use the default theme they show up just fine. Is there some special tweak to /etc/slim.conf that will make the session names visible using the Slackware theme?

I had Slim working with the latest -Current updates, but that was with a package I built before updating.
I borked my system yesterday and had to do a fresh install. Now I can't get Slim working.
I tried running the Slim SlackBuild from Slackbuilds.org, and it failed without giving any errors. I figured out that the problem was with this section:
Code:
The strip commands were failing and caused the SlackBuild to exit, so I added '|| true' to them.
Code:
Not sure why this is needed in -Current and not 13, maybe because of Bash 4.1?
Anyway, now the package builds successfully, but Slim won't start. My system just hangs at a black screen after 'Starting up X11 session manager'...Has anybody been able to get Slim working in -Current?

I am migrating to KDE4. When Current goes official I plan to install and give KDE4 a serious run. Because I am running 12.2 I will forego the upgrade path and install fresh in separate partitions. I haven't performed a fresh install since first installing Slackware 10.1. Likely I'll go 64-bit as my system is a dual core AMD with 4GB of RAM. Is there a list somewhere of 32-bit apps that have no 64-bit versions? Through the years I have many system tweaks and customized settings, but I'll be able to migrate and resurrect those readily. Mostly I am concerned with the desktop migration. Any punch list of warnings and "gotchas" are welcomed. Any links focusing on migrating at such a "late" stage in the KDE4 cycle.
I don't want to build the desktop completely from scratch. A fresh install reduces cruft and clutter that might have accumulated through the years, but also means more work configuring the desktop and apps. Fortunately, I long ago housed my user and data file directories on separate partitions and don't have to worry about that. Therefore during the transition I will be dual booting but using the same user accounts. All user accounts currently have $HOME/.kde profile directories that I do not want clobbered by KDE4. Should I rename that directory now and change a handful of KDE environment variables in 12.2 before working with KDE4, such as $KDEHOME and $KDE_CONFIG_DIR? New user account names would be one option, but my primary user account has too many non-KDE settings to migrate.
In that spirit, would somebody post the default Slackware KDE related environment variables so I can compare to those in KDE3? I am browsing the forum and web for various elements I should know or be forewarned, but many of the threads are old and I suspect no longer apply to KDE 4.5.5. I would like to migrate as many KDE 3.5.10 settings as possible, such as KMail, Akregator, Kate, Konsole, KMix, K3B, Kaffeine, Amarok, Digikam, etc. I realize there might be a point of diminishing returns and reconfiguring from scratch might be less problematic. Will both KDE4 and KDE3 be able to use the same KMail files? Or during the transition should I restrict my mail checks to KDE3?
If possible I would like to disable Nepomuk and Strigi before starting my first session in KDE4. I don't want to disable them after starting the first session as then profile files are automatically created. Hopefully nothing more than editing some default configuration files (/usr/share/autostart? Don't install those packages?). I have no need for or interest in Nepomuk (social-semantic desktop). I don't think I have any use for Strigi, which if I understand correctly, focuses on indexing meta data rather than just finding files. As far as I can tell because of PIM apps, disabling Akonadi is futile, so I won't try.

Now i have 64 bit computer i installed Slackware 23 64 bit on it. i followed Alien Bob's multi lib how to and installed needed libraries one by one. everything is fine expect wine configure script can not find some libraries needed: libgsm, libmpg123, libopenal, libxcomposite.
I have already installed 32 bit compatibility packages and used /etc/profile.d/32bit.sh as recommended in Alien Bob's howto. configure -- does not really list anything for pointing for libraries.

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

I was trying to plug projector on my laptop with slackware 13.1 installed. The problem is that the projector stops showing whenever I start X. I can see everything starting from LILO loader, but whenever I type "startx" - bam, no signal or just a black screen on the wall. I try to switch to console mode with ctrl+alt+f1 - the view appears, switching back to X with ctrl+alt+f7 - view disappears. I am using awesome WM. I tried XFCE, but the result was the same. I also tried to change resolution to
Code:
xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768 / 800x600
, but again, no difference. My laptop is ASUS F3Jc. Fn keys doesn't help as well.

what is the correct process for updating an application installed via the './configure, make, make install' sequence? For example, I have an app checked out via a git repository, on which I run the 'make install' on to install. Then a few days later I run a git pull to update to the latest release, do I just run the same sequence again or should I 'make uninstall' first?

any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.

i've posted and read and been through metacity forums, and still cant find a answer to slimming down the Gnome menu. The only way i can get the list shorter (less wasted space between menu entries, going top downwards) is a certain GTK theme (LK OS-K Blue) but i dont care for the metallic theme. i have spend 6 hours tonight tweaking .gtkrc files here and there, with varying results, the spacing is really horrible and makes an otherwise good desktop look horrible.
the fonts are small, unused entries are hidden, resolution is 1600x900. it can be done via a certain Metacity theme, but x=thickness and y=thickness & Treeviews in gtkrc have either no effect, or affect the wrong widgets, scrollbars, buttons or checkboxes. etc. i have compared both themes gtkrc files side by side, too. no progress. i have been chasing this UI 'feature' for months, but now i'm getting fed up. anyone have any better / more detailed info ?

I have installed VLC on two computers of mine on which Sid is running. Both computers are updated to the latest version of Vlc being 1.0.6.
Now the weird thing: on my laptop Vlc runs without any problem. But on my desktop every movie, clip or whatever gives a tall, slim view on the left side of the application window. I really can't find any setting that might cause this.

I was trying to set up my Xfce desktop on a fresh install.
I personally dislike Xdm, which is given as the default login manager, and would prefer to use Slim instead.
It is possible to install it using the Package Search feature (it's listed under the Contrib repository), but I haven't been able to set it as the default login manager (I wasn't able to find such a setting in /etc/sysconfig).

after several hours I've finally gotten slackware running! But the only thing I don't understand is how to configure the touchpad. In Ubuntu you can do it in the GUI, but I have no idea how to do it via Slackware.
I mostly want it to disable tap to click when I type, and enable horizontal and vertical scrolling. I've tried using synclient but that doesn't seem to work, and in any case I think that is only supposed to be a temporary fix anyway.
how to update packages I've installed? I installed wicd to use wireless for my laptop, but according to their website, it's best that I update it to the newest version because of some bug.

I am trying to build Pidgin on my Lucid install and on running configure, I get the following:
Quote:
configure: error: You must have GLib 2.4.0 or newer development headers installed to build.
If you have these installed already you may need to install pkg-config so I can find them. I tried installing pkg-config, but it's already in its newest version. I then tried going to the following website
[URL]
and downloaded and extracted glib on my computer. That changed nothing. I was hoping someone could tell me what's going on here. I just tried the this:
Quote:
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0
and got
Quote:
libgtk2.0-0 is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Has anyone noticed this bug in KDE 4.5? It started for me with the official 4.5.1 packages in -current, and is now continuing with Alien Bob's 4.5.2 packages. I don't think it happened with previous 4.5.0 builds I was using.
1) Right-click title bar, select "Configure Window Behavior"
2) the "Desktop Effects" option is selected by default, but displays the "Window Decorations" screen instead.
3) Clicking on another option on the left will show appropriate screen.
4) Finally clicking on "Desktop Effects" will show the proper screen to configure effects.
[URL]. [In the screenshot above, you can see "Desktop Effects" pre-selected, but displaying the wrong screen.]. Bug still shows up with a brand new user account with fresh .kde. My searching for other bug reports has turned up nothing, so I'm wondering if this is unique to slackware for whatever reason. I'm running slackware64-current, up to date, with NVIDIA binary drivers.
