My host machine(RHEL-5.4),consists 2 nic card and each having 192.168.x.x,172.20.x.x ip address. In My guest machine i configured 2 virtual nic.I want to customise these nic.

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Hardware :: NVidia-config Vs VMWare Player

Jun 3, 2010

As this seems to be an issue with a hardware driver I am posting it under hardware.

Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop
i7-860 CPU
8 GB RAM
swap area set to 9 GB
nVIdia GeForce GT220 1 GB
Samsung SymcMaster 932 and Acer X223w displays
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, all patches, nVidia-current 195.36.15
VMWare Player (64 bit) 3.1.0 build-261024

The whole nVidia thing has been busting my buttons since I installed 10.04 (actually 9.10 was in some ways worse). Occasional "low graphics mode" at boot and the fact that nvidia-settings makes inexplicable changes to the xorg.conf even when I make no changes to the configuration as shown in the program. After a number of uninstall, reinstall drills and a few kicks in the slats the machine is working reasonably well except as noted above.

However, I have noticed that I often cannot load the nvidia-settings program. If I launch it from the menu, nothing seems to happen. In a terminal I get

Quote:

After doing some research on "Segmentation fault" I find that most of the issues refer to the xorg.conf file. The posts I have seen are also quite old. So I did a little testing.

Immediately after booting the PC I can run nvidia-settings with no problem - from the menu or in a terminal. I can run it repeatedly.

BUT - after I launch a virtual machine in VMWare Player (it does not seem to matter what the guest OS is) I can no longer run nvidia-settings. I get the error as I quoted above. If nvidia-settings is already running when the VM is launched, nvidia-settings continues to function until I exit the program. I can then no longer start nvidia-settings.

The problem only occurs after the VM is launched, not simply by running VMWare Player. Shutting down the VM does not fix the problem. Only a reboot will do the trick.

Fedora Servers :: Unable To Execute Vmware-config.pl Again

Feb 16, 2010

I am installing VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.i386 on FC 12

Have an error when executing vmware-config.pl initially. When I try again it has the message:-

start of messages;

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were not installed by the VMware Installer. Please remove them then run this installer again.

vmmemctl
vmci
vmxnet
vmhgfs
vmblock

I.e. - 'rm /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686/misc/<ModuleName>.{o,ko}'

Execution aborted.

End of message

I tried remove them using modprobe e.g.

modprobe -r -v vmemctl the response was "WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/anaconda, it will be ignored in a future release."

Subsequently I tried vmware-config.pl, but have the same error.

Software :: Importing A Vmware Virtual Machine File Vi Vmware Server 2.0.2?

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.

I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

Ubuntu :: VMWare Missing But Working After Update?

Apr 21, 2011

I have just updated my 7.10 release to the final release patches/kernel for it (as a step in the process of upgrading the installation to 10.10) when I have come across a very disheartening problem.

Prior to this update, I was running VMWare Server 2.0 with its normaal admin console at localhost:8333 and an applet install under Applications -> System Tools -> VMWare Administration Console. Now that I have updated, both these are missing or inoperable.

However, the VMs hosted by the machine are still perfectly functional. I can login to the via Remote Desktop or VNC as the case may be.

I can also no longer see the /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines folder or any VMWare folder at all, even when using the full root login and permissions. Find and Search also show a disturbing lack of the 64Gb of VMDK files that are the running VMs.

Any clues as to how I can track down this invisible, but functional install? I do not want to proceed with another update until I get a solid backup of the VMDKs.

Fedora :: System-config-network Bin Missing?

Nov 5, 2010

I looked around, but found no results that really matched and I would like to point out that I am fairly new to linux, so this may be a very obvious answer to some of you.I am running fc12.i686, installed from a disk in the back of a book for a class. No one else in my class is having this issue. When I select System > Administration > Network I am given this error: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/system-config-network" (No such file or directory). I am not so new to not realize that this file is not there, which I confirmed with an "ls -a". My question is, is there any way that I can download and install that bin? Or perhaps replace/repair it with the disc? It was supposed to be in the original install and my have been, the only thing that I have done in the /usr/bin/ directory is I tried to install Java (6.22 I think it was), which told me it installed correctly but didn't work when I tried Minecraft.

Debian :: /dev/vmmon Missing From Lenny - VMware Could Not Install VM Guest

Nov 5, 2010

Trying to install an XP Pro virtual machine as a guest in VMware Workstation 7.1.2, fails with the error: "Could not open /dev/vmmon. No such file or directory. Please make sure that the kernel module 'vmmon' is loaded".Host OS is Debian-Lenny. Was able to specify the new virtual machine configuration, but VMware failed to create the new image (because of the error specified in previous paragraph).

Is the problem that Debian is not loading/executing a needed process? Should I be directing this problem to either Debian or VMware? I searched the VMware documentation, and it mentioned something about chkconfig (Redhat), or the rcconf/ksysv utilities to change SUSE configuration levels. I am unfamiliar with the syntax, don't know why this is necessary.

Fedora Networking :: 11 As Vmplayer Guest Can't See Network

Jul 12, 2009

I'm running Fedora 10 as host to vmplayer guests (win98se, Ubuntu 9.04). Each can connect to the Samba server and give me access to my home directory and 'backup' partition. Samba and nfs are both running. So far so good.

I've just installed Fedora 11 as a vmplayer guest. When I click Places > Network Nautilus opens up showing only Windows Network. Double-click on this item and I get a pop-up message: "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." SELinux is disabled for the moment. I tried to mount the 'backup' partition: mount -t ext3 catinthehat2:/archive /mnt/archive but get the message: mount: special device catinthehat2:/archive does not exist.

Software :: Running A Clonezilla VM With Vmplayer - Unable To Recognize Partition

Mar 30, 2010

I've tried to run a Clonezilla VM using vmplayer. All works fine except when I get to the cloning section. I have three partitions on the HD; partition A, B and C.

A = Partition to clone
B = Partiton onto which the clone image of PartA is to be saved
C = OS partition which is running the Clonezilla VM.

I would like to save the partition as an image but when it actually comes to the nitty gritty of partition cloning Clonezilla does not recognise PartA or PartB. I get error massages along the lines of "No unmounted partitions found." When I drop into a shell prompt the fdisk -l output shows nothing. However, running from the liveCD it recognises both these along with PartC. Is there a way of carrying out the cloning using this method by tweaking vmplayer settings or is the project just not possible ?

Networking :: Bonded NICs At Host OS - Ubuntu Server - Bridged To Virtual OS - UServ - In VMware Server

Jul 19, 2009

Just something that struck me while working on our virtual servers today.

I have bonded 3 NICs at the host in Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS. They are using mode 0 for Round-robin. Point is to increase the speed/performance of all the servers, but mainly the fileserver. The fileserver is a virtual server running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on VMware Server 2.0.

1) I noticed the NIC in the slave OS reported link speed as 1000 and Im unable to change it as the NIC (virtual one) doesnt support it. Does this not really matter, as the NIC doesnt exist, and it will run at higher speeds anyway? Or do I have to remove the bond on the host, bridge all 3 interfaces from the host to the slave OS, and then make a bond in the slave OS?

2) While at it, does mode 0 only increase performance on data being sent from the host or does it also increase the available incoming bandwidth?
