Searching for what appears to be "missing" CompizConfig settings in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. How to change the "Cube" into a "Cylinder" and how to enable floating windows (windows that seem to hover just over the cube when it is rotated. Were these eliminated? They were both available in 9.10.

So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?

i wanted to change the opacity settings in compiz config settings manager (i read it in the forum post that i can change opacity using compiz settings) when i opened the ccsm, i did not find the opacity settings in general options...do i have to update or upgrade?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

Since installing Compiz Config Settings Manager on my Ubuntu 10.10 the system logs out when I leave the machine idle for a while. This is very irritating and I cannot find any settings to change - the power settings are OK, set to never switch off and to activate screensaver after 30 mins and to keep screen unlocked. Where on earth does the system pick up a command to log out?

I have done everything it says and double checked, but still can't get it to work. I am using Linux Mint 9 amd64.
I want t desktop cube, so I followed the ..... guide here.
When I enter simple compiz config and start to change the Ultimate profile, then I lose the ability to do key commands like alt+tab and consequently I cannot use things like the switcher, or cube. The only desktop hotkeys that I can currently do (that I know of) is ctrl+alt+left/right to move to next desktop. How do I enable hotkeys to work again?
I am having some trouble using the compiz config settings on the new "Natty Narwhal" 11.04. On 10.4, it worked seamlessly; the 3D desktop cube worked, 3D windows worked, and rotating desktop cube also worked. On Natty Narwhal, nothing works-- at all. It may seem kind of childish for me to download compiz config just for the cube, but the fact that compiz config alone isn't even working is kind of making me nervous. Though, it would be great if someone could help me with the cube.

i have ubuntu studio 10.04 installed and this is my second installation of the system. now that i have updated the system, got the fglrx drivers for my ATI HD5750, installed compiz-config-settings and glx-dock (aka cairo-dock). the first time i started the glx-dock, half of the dock was visible and it was distorted all over. so i ran compiz-config-settings for the first time and saw that it wasn't also working. then i tried to find a solution for a few valuable hours because it was essential to customize the feel of an OS but i think i have came to a point that i should stop trying to learn things that i see for the first time but ask and hope for the best (soon). anyway i should say that compiz and cairo dock was working the first time i installed the system. now when i run compiz-check, it gives the following output:

I've been looking around on the Internet for a comprehensive tutorial on 'how Compiz works', 'what all the settings mean' and 'using' Compiz; but, so far, have only seen things describing how to do a certain thing or other. I've gone into Compiz Configuration Settings Manager and poked around but what I've seen in there seems extremely technical (in other words - I don't know what the heck these settings mean or what would happen if I changed one of them).So far I've manged to get the magnifying glass thing and I have wobbly windows (don't know if I can take credit for that though). So I see all these amazing demonstrations of it on you tube and whatnot and I wish I could do some of that stuff but I'd really like to approach this by learning all about Compiz from A to Z rather than learn this thing and then that thing, etc.
Is there anything out there that you know of? Ann ebook or something? I saw a book called: "Compiz Fusion" URL... that really, interests me but it is not available as an eBook (believe me I looked and looked and looked) and it's pretty expensive.
Going through the forums I read a post, where it was told to rebuild a package... But unfortunately, I didnt understand a thing which was mentioned in the building rpm tutorail that I reffered... The replacement to that package which was mentioned in the same post was unavailable.
View 8 Replies View RelatedA couple of issues with compiz. I'm setting up Debian Squeeze on a new-to-me laptop. Video card is nVidia Quadro FX 570M.
I installed the nVidia non-free driver, and that's working fine. Compiz starts up ok (I say "compiz --replace"). At least some of the effects are working, and the windows look normal.
First issue: as soon as I start Compiz, the number of workspaces goes from 4 to 2. And Workspace Switcher Preferences (the thing that pops up when you right-click the workspace switcher in the Gnome Panel) no longer shows the controls for changing the number of workspaces.
Is there is a way to change the no. of workspaces using gnome configuration editor? That might be a good workaround.
The second issue is, compizconfig-settings-manager will not run, whether Compiz is running or not. I don�t know if it would run before I installed the nVidia driver (Compiz wouldn't run so there was no reason to try CCSM). When I try to start it from the menu, I get the spinning cursor for several seconds, and that's all. When I say "ccsm" in a console...

I dont think the locale error is the problem. I get locale warnings all the time, like when I use apt-get, but it doesnt stop the program from running. But I could be wrong about that.
I have compiz installed an tried to change some things from default but after I did so...it would look the same but show that the settings where diffident
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently got rid of the different panels on my desktop and replaced them with AWN bars. However, in doing so I have lost my Wally system tray icon, which was my only means of accessing the Wally configuration tool.
Does anyone out there know of another way I can start this tool? Is there a command I can run from the CLI to bring it up?
Or, has a better alternative to Wally come out in the last few months which I should be using instead?
I am experiencing a similar problem as this thread but I do not use the fusion-icon.[URL].. Compiz will not save custom settings when compiz-settings-manager is used. It will save setting thru "Simple-settings-manager". In addition, some settings will not take effect immediately. Example: The "viewport switcher" in "Desktop-wall". View 3 Replies View RelatedSince a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.
On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.
After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.
Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.
I was playing around with compiz too much and kinda messed up some stuff. Is there anyway I can just go back to how stuff was? Without system restore, I don't know of a way I can restore my previous compiz settings.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been missing this feature from windows, and had thought I would just have to do without, but today, people have alluded that it is possible to do with compiz. I am referring to the ability to take a window, drag it to the edge of the screen and it to then fill up that side of the screen.. or if drug to the top, maximize itself. I have looked and messed with settings, and have been able to do something to the effect of dragging my mouse to the edge of the screen will kind of tile windows, but it does it to all my windows or all of a certain type and whatnot.
And I want to do it to a specific window, and then another - for the side by side viewing. it also does not vertically maximize it, only taking a portion of the screen from top to bottom. I have been able to do it this way by having only 2 windows open and using a keyboard to do so, but i would like to be able to use only my mouse. Is there a way to drag one window the the edge of the screen and have it maximize to that half-side of the screen AND/OR drag to the top and have it maximize to fullscreen?
to back-up and eventually restore compiz settings, is it enough to back-up and restore the .compiz directory in $HOME? Reason is that the setting in my classic gnome set-up are different and partially conflict with the unity settings. Since I want to be able to run both environment (to give Unity a chance) I'd like to be able to switch settings easily.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.
There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!
Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

I'm interested to hear what config/settings files - or whole folders - you've managed to simply copy over from your previous installation and have working in the new. This can be either for specific programs or for parts of the system, but I suppose most of what people would find useful is getting some of their programs back to how they had them. These can be individual files or whole folders, but if there is a settings folder for a program but only one of the files is actually worth copying, just mention the one file and what it does. Also interested in hearing from KDE and Xfce users, for the benefit of those of us who have multiple desktop environments in the same system. (Besides, even those with only Gnome will use some of the great KDE apps like Amarok and K3b).
Here are my contributions:
