View 2 Replies View RelatedI like puppy apart from the file manager, you could probably download a different FM from the package manager, but i am looking for a new distro. I know DSL as well and i think it's good but there must be better. I will mainly be using it for 2 reason
a) Recover(backup) files from a windows system i can't boot into
b) To access the net of a system i can't boot into
1) Be under 200MB
2) Fast to boot
3) Have network support including wireless
4) Have sata support and ideally raid support
5) Good file manager
6) As windows like as possible
7) Easy to copy files from HD to usb stick and easy to set permissions .
All my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have ubuntu on my dell inspiron 17 which I installed myself last year with no IT or linux experience and spent 4 days sorting out the wireless with the help from some very patient people on here. A stupid 'friend' formatted my laptop and now I am without wireless again. I found the old thread that helped me set up the wireless last time but I just can't follow it. I believe it was bcmwl-kernal-source driver I needed. There was some mention on the thread of other distros having the broadcom driver I needed as default, does anyone know which ones?

I recently came upon an ubuntu variant called blackbuntu. Its in early release stages at this point, but its being marketed as a pen test distro. Exactly like Back Track, but in Ubuntu form. Was just wondering if anyone has had a chance to use this yet? All software that the distro uses is readily avilable in the ubuntu repositories already.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two distros and windows installed. I only want one distro (I have decided on Ubuntu) and windows. But, the other distro, the one that I want to eradicate is the last one installed and it is its GRUB in the MBR.
I know what happens from experience if I just delete that partition with a liveCD - GRUB won't boot anything on reboot.
What do I need to do from within Ubuntu or the other Linux before deleting the partition of the second distro so that I have a working GRUB when I reboot ?
I loaded a distro (which does not seem relevant) onto my laptop and used it for a while. Applications did whatever they do creating and saving files. I know that I have images and documents and videos and music and such on the laptop among other non-distro data files. Is there a simple (straightforward) way to identify which files on disk are NOT part of the installed distro? I know how to use find. I know that find lets me locate files based on some date-time-stamp. I know, too, that I can use any selected file as a benchmark date-time instead of some specific command line string.
For example:
Code:
Find files whose modification date is before (or after) the date(s) associated with the file /path/foo.bar.
Is there any one file that I could use to peg the distro install date? Can I get that date from somewhere else like a file system details?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am curious if anyone has played around with this desktop environment? I would love to see a Linux distro use this as default. I think one thing Mac does well is self contained apps. Has anyone been able to get ROX to work on Ubuntu? Does anyone know of a distro that uses ROX as the default environment?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been wanting to play around with the idea of switching to a tiling wm. So I started up virtual box and installed Ubuntu minimal, then installed awesome, gdm, terminator, Firefox, gedit, and a few other trinkets. What I would like to know, is their any other programs that work good, and look decent in awesome. I switched to terminator from gnome-terminal because I like the look of terminator better when it is in awesome. Also, is their any distro that use awesome by default, I may be able to play around with or get ideas from? Post some screen shots, I'm interested in how everyone else is set up. Once, i get mine set up to fit me, i'm going to remastersys it, and use it on my production machine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.
It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?
my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?
I have installed VMplayer 3.0.0 on a Fedora 12 64 bit system. It seems to have installed ok with no error messages. However when I start the VMplayer it flashes up on the screen and goes again and will not run. has any one had a similar experience and if so what was the fix? I installed the package because i understand it will run Windows 98SE ok. O need it to run two pieces of Windows software. All I need is networking and access to a floppy drive once so I do not need sound and all the other bells and whistles.

I'm running Fedora 10 as host to vmplayer guests (win98se, Ubuntu 9.04). Each can connect to the Samba server and give me access to my home directory and 'backup' partition. Samba and nfs are both running. So far so good.
I've just installed Fedora 11 as a vmplayer guest. When I click Places > Network Nautilus opens up showing only Windows Network. Double-click on this item and I get a pop-up message: "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." SELinux is disabled for the moment. I tried to mount the 'backup' partition: mount -t ext3 catinthehat2:/archive /mnt/archive but get the message: mount: special device catinthehat2:/archive does not exist.
Recently i installed VMPlayer-3.1.3 Linux version in RHEL-5.4 installation is done, but vmware-config.pl file is missing so that i cannot customise the network settings.
My host machine(RHEL-5.4),consists 2 nic card and each having 192.168.x.x,172.20.x.x ip address. In My guest machine i configured 2 virtual nic.I want to customise these nic.
Also i want to bridge the host machines eth0 to vmnet0 and eth1 to vmnet2.so that i can customise the virtual nic's.
I did these settings in windows and it is working, but this is the first time i am installing vmplayer in linux.
I recently wanned to use my vmplayer installation and I got the following error : /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmplayer: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libvmwareui.so.0/libvmwareui.so.0: undefined symbol: vmodl_vmomi_key_any_value_get_type
I try to reinstall vmplayer. It didn't help.
