Fedora Servers :: Unable To Execute Vmware-config.pl Again

Feb 16, 2010

I am installing VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.i386 on FC 12

Have an error when executing vmware-config.pl initially. When I try again it has the message:-

start of messages;

The following VMware kernel modules have been found on your system that were not installed by the VMware Installer. Please remove them then run this installer again.

vmmemctl
vmci
vmxnet
vmhgfs
vmblock

I.e. - 'rm /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686/misc/<ModuleName>.{o,ko}'

Execution aborted.

End of message

I tried remove them using modprobe e.g.

modprobe -r -v vmemctl the response was "WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/anaconda, it will be ignored in a future release."

Subsequently I tried vmware-config.pl, but have the same error.

Jan 18, 2010

I've been trying to run the vmware-config.pl, but I'm getting this message

Quote:

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? yes

Then I hit enter, and later get this message

Quote:

Unable to build the vmmon module.

I have installed gcc and the kernel-devel tools, and after installing all that I did an update, but still not getting through with the configuration.

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To Execute .sh Script

May 13, 2010

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 running Ubuntu 10.04 Server with SSH and Samba. My problem is that I am unable to execute my adduser.sh script which reads from a text file and adds users to the box and Samba. I have ran chmod a+x to make it executable and placed it in /usr/local/bin.

When I run sudo adduser.sh I get "sudo: unable to execute /usr/local/bin/adduser.sh: No such file or directory".

When I run adduser.sh I get "-bash: /usr/local/bin/adduser.sh: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory " I have been using Kubuntu as my home workstation for some time now but I have managed Windows servers but since I was given the freedom to setup this server I chose Linux.

Ubuntu Servers :: VMWare Guest - VFS Unable To Mount

Jul 21, 2010

I've built a customized 2.6.32 kernel over Ubuntu 10.04 server (physically) -note: it is the same version that comes with the livecd-. Then I added my stuff, cloned the disk, applied it to 3 different hardware boxes and it works perfectly. But when I put that image on a VMWare Workstation 7.1 or VirtualBox machine it doesn't load... I get a "kernel panic: not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block 0,0". So, I've created a new vm, I've installed ubuntu and it booted without a problem.

I ran my kernel patching as I did on the physical machine, but when I rebooted with the new kernel, I got the same error. So, the problem seems to be something in the customized kernel, but specifically going over virualized copies. By the way - In a previous version, specifically Debian 5 with kernel 2.6.18, I did the same stuff about a year ago and the machine loads perfectly in any virtualized environment. Then, the only thing left to think about my problem is that some grub parameter or kernel driver or something is messing up with booting. The customization of the kernel is only the patching for IMQ stuff.

Ubuntu Servers :: Config - Change / Add From The Default OpenSSH Config Files To Get Tunnelling To Work?

Jul 10, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:

Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Unable To Mount Using Vmware?

Jan 25, 2010

shall explain my problem step by step! so that you all can understand!

1. Out of 120gb hardisk, i created an 100mb in the first cylinder of the harddisk and installed the "symantec boot magic" for dual boot option after switching on the system.

2. Next 70gb is for windows and installed the same.

3. Rest were for "Linux" !! In which i created on 100mb for "/boot" loader files, then one 1gb for "swap" area and the rest of the memory for "/" mounting point.

4. After all, i installed the "VMWARE" in windows, and while selecting the mount of linux, i selected the respective linux portion, and did the other settings.

5. Once done with this, i powered on the machine in vmware, but it was saying "BTMAGIC" not able to find, install again..

6. Cant we not mount the linux via "vmware" which is installed in windows, as i had used "symantec boot magic" for mounting windows/linux??

Hardware :: NVidia-config Vs VMWare Player

Jun 3, 2010

As this seems to be an issue with a hardware driver I am posting it under hardware.

Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop
i7-860 CPU
8 GB RAM
swap area set to 9 GB
nVIdia GeForce GT220 1 GB
Samsung SymcMaster 932 and Acer X223w displays
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, all patches, nVidia-current 195.36.15
VMWare Player (64 bit) 3.1.0 build-261024

The whole nVidia thing has been busting my buttons since I installed 10.04 (actually 9.10 was in some ways worse). Occasional "low graphics mode" at boot and the fact that nvidia-settings makes inexplicable changes to the xorg.conf even when I make no changes to the configuration as shown in the program. After a number of uninstall, reinstall drills and a few kicks in the slats the machine is working reasonably well except as noted above.

However, I have noticed that I often cannot load the nvidia-settings program. If I launch it from the menu, nothing seems to happen. In a terminal I get

Quote:

After doing some research on "Segmentation fault" I find that most of the issues refer to the xorg.conf file. The posts I have seen are also quite old. So I did a little testing.

Immediately after booting the PC I can run nvidia-settings with no problem - from the menu or in a terminal. I can run it repeatedly.

BUT - after I launch a virtual machine in VMWare Player (it does not seem to matter what the guest OS is) I can no longer run nvidia-settings. I get the error as I quoted above. If nvidia-settings is already running when the VM is launched, nvidia-settings continues to function until I exit the program. I can then no longer start nvidia-settings.

The problem only occurs after the VM is launched, not simply by running VMWare Player. Shutting down the VM does not fix the problem. Only a reboot will do the trick.

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install F10 Using VMWare

Oct 4, 2009

Actually I found a discussion on this topic. But my problem a bit different from the discussion made over there...The major discussion in that topic is related to the Graphics Issue. But my problem is with the CPU(as my machine says so).... I am posting my screenshot herewith. Please take some time to review it. This would be grateful.

Actually the error says: "This Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU. but only detected i686 CPU. Unable to Boot - please use a kernel appropriate for ur CPU." What does this mean?? My machine has Intel Core 2 Duo t6600 processor. Is Virtualization Playing a role in this issue...??

Fedora Servers :: VMware Reports Wrong Space Available

Jan 13, 2009

I've a physical machine with FC9 running vmware server 1.0.6 with 2 virtual machines. Each virtual machine is also running FC9. Everything was running smoothly until one day, one virtual machine stop. I've checked /var/log/messages of that machine and it says:

Code:
"no space left on device"
.
I try to create a file
Code:
touch dd
and the answer is the same.

The odd thing about all this is that the machine (both virtual and physical) have enough space left. This is the space available reported by df -h. Physical machine

Code:
[root@halwifi hotspot]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
228G 38G 179G 18% /
/dev/sda1 190M 19M 162M 11% /boot
tmpfs 1010M 96K 1010M 1% /dev/shm
and the Virtual Machine

Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00

/dev/sda1 190M 19M 162M 11% /boot

Fedora Servers :: Config For Routing New To FC10?

Feb 4, 2009

So my server running FC4 died last night and I decided to go ahead with the long-awaited upgrade to FC10 while I was rebuilding my server. I use my server for a number of things including, but not limited to: router, firewall, web server, mail server... I have a typical configuration process that I have followed since before fedora, and it has worked well for me up through FC4, but my usual config process doesn't work on FC10.

First of all, I don't want SELinux running, I didn't see an option to not install it during the FC10 setup, so how to I properly disable or uninstall it afterwards? Second, I was unable to even configure the server to route traffic from my internal network to the web, here's the process I usually go through for this:

[Code]...

I don't have a static IP from my ISP, so I'm not quite sure how to add the default route. I think I need to do something like "route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx eth1" where eth1 is my external NIC, correct?

What else do I need to do to route traffic? I noticed that I wasn't even able to ping my server from the internal network even though they are on the same subnet, my server's internal NIC has an address of 192.168.7.1 and my computer on the network has an address of 192.168.7.2. If I can get this going to I have internet access again at the very least, I can move forward with the web server, email, etc.

Fedora Servers :: Config - Can't Seem To Get Samba Working

Mar 8, 2009

I've read through these pages [URL] but can't seem to get Samba server working. I am using Gnome and I go to System - Administration - Services

In there I can see smb and nmb. Both are enabled, but both have a status of unknown. I can't seem to start or stop either of them. I can just enable or disable them. I've tried using the gui, as well as command line.

I'd really like to get this going as I'd like to copy files from my XP Pro box to my Linux box (F9). I have WinSCP, but am having permission issues and I can only copy to a folder on my desktop on the Linux box (I'd like to get this fixed too, but that's a different thread at a later time)

Fedora Servers :: Samba Can't Read The Config File?

Nov 24, 2009

I have a computer running Fedora 11. I wanted to use samba in my office. So I configured the /etc/samba/smb.conf ,but it did not work well : Windows can find samba, but when I tap in username and password, samba request them again , and the same thing continues in a loop. So I copied another computer's smb.conf (which is also a Fedora 11,samba runs well in this one).I copied this file to /etc/samba/ ,then samba can't satart up . I read from /var/log/samba/log.smbd.log : Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": Permission denied Even if I use: chmod 777 /etc/samba/smb.conf

why I can't login samba from Windows:

Fedora Servers :: HTTP Config Tool Not Running On F12

Mar 23, 2010

I just done a brand new install of fed12 and did all the yum updates. Apache seems to start ok and I always liked the http config tool but it won't run on Fedora 12. I downloaded and installed system-config-httpd.noarch 5:1.4.6-1.fc12 and it all went fine but when I try to start it I get the usual box asking for my root password, I type it in and press enter, the box disappears and then....nothing. If I run system-config-httpd in a terminal I get the same box asking for root passowrd but when I enter it I get a long scroll of text which ends with:

line 4: 2137 Aborted (core dumped) /usr/bin/python /usr/share/system-config-httpd/ApacheConf.py

I don't know what causes this. Is there any way to get the http config tool working?

security = user
passdb backend = tdbsam
unix extensions = no

public = yes
guest ok = no
write list = siteusr
writeable = yes
create mask = 0777
browseable = no
security mask = 0777
directory security mask = 0777
note that the drive is mapped as user siteusr

Fedora Networking :: FC10 - Unusual System-config - Unable To Ping Other Computers Or Routers

Jun 2, 2009

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.

Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

General :: VMware Snapshot With VMware Tools Loses Network On Restart - Host XP - Guest Fedora

Oct 3, 2010

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.

I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/

I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.

I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.

In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.

One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.

It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.

The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
