There was an option in openSUSE about booting an installed system if grub is deleted from the MBR. This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. I know how to mount the root partition where openSUSE 11.3 is installed, but how to proceed?

i hav a system which is never connected to internet. I had installed opensuse 11.1 from dvd.But the media files r not working. I had installed gstreamer all sets. And tried to install codecs using a .ypm file i downloaded from the opensuse server but not working without internet. I can download any files in other system and copy it to my system.

I just deleted the suse kernel-default by yast2 accidentally and rebooted the suse11 box,how will I install the kernel in suse11 rescue mode from the suse11 dvd ?

Now I want to install it on another suse 10 box. Instead of doing the compiling/installing steps once again, is there a good way I can package gpg2, or tar it on my server, so it can be easily installed on the other server? Also, when I installed gpg, it was installed everywhere, /usr/local/lib, /usr/local/bin, my download dir etc. How do I pick the needed libraries and executable to make the package? maybe I Should specify a path for the gpg to be installed, then tar the whole directory. how to do the first part?

I created a folder --> right click and click on Share --> Check on "Share with Samba(Microsoft Windows)", "Public" and "Writable". Then connect from Windows using //192.168.100.1/sharefolder. I just installed the software for my APC UPS on my SUSE 11.2 machine. After some work I finally got it work except I have to go and start it each time I reboot. It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

We previously had the server booting from the LUNs on the filer, but after some tinkering around with the fibre channel BIOS, we have the situation where the LUNS seem to be mounted, the OS boots, starts to initialise everything but then stalls, saying:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this

Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I tried also to make a bootable usb w/ unetbootin but all the distros failed to load w/ a syslinux boot error message so I really need to fix the existing debian installation to get access to my files i need for the university, it's debian stable (6.0.4) on hp mini 210 ....
Have win 7 on one drive and ubuntu on 2nd drive then son goes and deletes partition that Ubi was in ,now cannot access any system all i get is grub rescue on screen and i cannot boot with any thing taking a guess the grub bootloader has died and made a mess of the windows bootloader.
