SUSE / Novell :: OpenSUSE 11.1 Fails To Boot Past Grub Prompt / Get It To Work?
Jan 28, 2010
OpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

I have tried to install Opensuse 11.2 (Gnome-Live) and run it as my main OS.When i rebooted after install it would go to login and the desktop wallpaper would come up and that was it. Nothing else loaded, no panels, icons, just the green background.Any suggestions to fix this at all? Right now I am under XP, but would rather use Opensuse. My hardware consists of the following:Dell sx2601 gb Ram20 gb HDintel 82845g graphics. The actual live-cd ran perfectly.

We have a SuSE/SLES 9 server that boots from a fibre channel card, using volumes from a NetApp filer.
We previously had the server booting from the LUNs on the filer, but after some tinkering around with the fibre channel BIOS, we have the situation where the LUNS seem to be mounted, the OS boots, starts to initialise everything but then stalls, saying:
We have tried loads of combinations of settings in the BIOS and fibre channel BIOS without any success or any idea what may have caused the error.

I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

On installing a dual boot XP/OS 11.2 on a 40GB HDD, I had no problems with the partitioning, but now I have installed XP (15GB) and Vista (20GB), the OS 11.2 setup insists on shrinking the Vista partition to 15GB and does not allow me to change this.Have tried going into 'Create Partition Setup' and 'Custom Partition Setup' but can't seem to get Vista back to its original size

I got this setup:
- Asus M2N32, Athlon X2, 4G Ram, Raid 5
- dom0 on lvm, boots always
- tried to create a domU using dirinstall
- creating a volume lamp in group VGsys with 5G and ext4
- mount /dev/VGsys/lamp /var/tmp/dirinstall
- yast dirinstall: fails when calling dirinstall_finish
- tried to create a domU using vm-install
- creating a volume lamp2 in group VGsys with 5G and ext4
- vm-install fails too
- tried to make an image on susestudio, successfully, but that does not boot, failing when trying to mount the rood partition
- copied the dom0 image to a domU disk
None of these domU booted sucessfully, all of them showed the following messages:
- kernels used 2.6.31.8 and kotd 2.6.31.12 give same results
I am told to disable scsi subsystem in the kernel, I have compiled a kernel before, but
1) I cannot believe I am the only one having this issue or I miss something truely obvious (then what do I miss, please?)
2) dirinstall and vm-install worked in 11.1, there were issues, but recoverable, why now not in 11.2?

After the kernel updated to version; 2.6.25.18-0.2 and I edited my grub boot file, and the printer driver shows as; Local Raw Printer, it fails to print. With SUSE 11.0, KDE 3.5.9, on a 2006 Gateway AMD Athlon desktop computer, using a Canon PIXMA MP500 multi-function inkjet printer connected USB, when I attempt to print a page, it shows as if it is functioning fine, but nothing happens, and no error messages.

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto the IDE drive. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive and boot from it). If I parse the dmesg output I see the message "ata_piix 0000:1f.1 device not available because of BAR 2 (0x0-0x7) collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.
I've tried Ubuntu with similar results. Older kernels WILL install onto this same MB/PATA controller (Ubuntu 6.06, 2.6.15 and RHEL4) so it seems that something changed in the ATA driver as the kernel has matured and my bios isn't up to snuff for these pickier drivers.

I tried to install openSUSE 11.3 from the Gnome live CD. I had four partitions set already for /boot, /, /home (ext4 all) and swap from a previous failed Linux Mint installation. I installed into them, and formatted them. The /boot partition is primary and pretty well into the disk. The other partitions are logical and at the end of an extended partition which has several partitions before them. There's also an inactive Windows primary partition at the start, and a second disk with a Windows installation and a lot of logical partitions.
After install, it looks like booting into grub works fine, and I get "Error 22: No Such Partition". I then get to the GRUB menu. If I choose openSUSE from there I get:
Booting 'openSUSE 11.3'
root (hd1,2)
Error 22: No Such Partition
Booting from the live CD it looks like /boot, / and /home contain data, so they must be formatted fine.

I'm not entirely sure if this is where this goes, but problems occurred after messing around with desktop interface areas
Basically after logging in my screen turns black and then seems to fail out back to the log in screen. No error message, nothing. log in -> black screen -> log in
Ive tried to boot in fail safe gnome with exact same result.
Problems started after these two actions
1) was trying to get compiz to handle the desktop, so I disabled "show desktop" through Nautilus ( I re-enabled before logging off however)
2) was stupid and tired and accidentally uninstalled libglib2.0-0, libglib2.0-data, and several other packages through the software center interface. Ive re installed these through root access but I must be missing some files because it still fails to start
Because im not entirely sure what is causing the problem ( failure to render, or missing crucial packages) im not sure how I should go about trying to repair. Is there any to restore factory settings and programs without blitzing out current drivers and apps ?

I just recently put Ubuntu 10.10 for ppc on a Cd-R and installed it onto an old Mac I had found. The installation seemed perfectly fine I booted the computer and was presented to boot with two options "Linux" and "old" or to press enter and boot default. I had decided to boot default and it reaches the splash screen where the loading bar advances two dots and then completely stops.

I didn't have any luck finding the solution for not getting opengl working on a SLES11 server with a remote X-Win32 client. As a reference I've used the tool "glxgears" for testing. We have two servers. One (server A) with SLES10 and the other (server B) with SLES11. We use X-Win32 (ver. 9.x) as an X-server on a Microsoft Windows client machine. Both servers are connected to with ssh with X11 forwarding enabled (Xclock works fine on both).Starting glxgears from server A works fine; Three nice gears are displayed.

From SUSE I have dl the installation DVD for SUSE 11.2 . When trying to install the system, I got the first "surprise". When the "checking your system comes, I get, in red, the following message: "unsupported combination of hardware platform X86_64 and bootloader grub. I ignored it and continue with the installation. It goes till the end and when it has to restart into new OS, there was nothing, only black screen and no keyboard. So I have to reinstall into suse 11.1. What is this and how to proceed? And yes, when I checked the DVD, it says the system on it is suse 11.3-1.21.

After upgrade of 11.1 to 11.2 I noticed that most of the services that was started in 11.1 at boot are starting now in 11.2. I check run-level of services with
Code:
chkconfig --list
And everything is as like was before the upgrade. When I start services manually everything is OK, but on restart they do not starting.
Code:
cat /var/log/YaST2/y2logmkinitrd

Initrd image: /boot/initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-default

There was an option in openSUSE about booting an installed system if grub is deleted from the MBR. This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. I know how to mount the root partition where openSUSE 11.3 is installed, but how to proceed?

I've just bought a new laptop (with no installed OS) and have (excitedly) burned a live cd for Karmic Koala 64bit: several people on the laptop manufacturer forums have got working with this particular laptop.
The live session works fine but when I install and then reboot I get 'GRUB Loading' with a flashing underscore and nothing else happens. I've found this thread and this bug report and have tried reinstalling GRUB to no avail.
I also have a live cd for 9.04 which I've tried to install and get a the same problem only now the message is 'GRUB Loading stage1.5' So I don't think it's a problem with the version of GRUB as described in the bug report thread.
I read something else that said it could be a problem with the mbr being in some way geared towards Windows but I'm not sure. I tried following those instructions but nothing happened and then I just got the same error again.
Any help would be greatly received since obviously I'm pretty desperate to get my spangly (and expensive) new machine to work. Edit: I also have a thread at the manufacturers' forums. But we're at a loss there too.

I've installed FreeBSD (sdc1) and DesktopBSD (sdc4). When I try to boot DesktopBSD it boots FreeBSD.here is menu.lst
###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: other###
title FreeBSD 8.1
rootnoverify (hd2,0)
chainloader +1
###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: other###
title DesktopBSD-1.7-amd64

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.

I just installed the software for my APC UPS on my SUSE 11.2 machine. After some work I finally got it work except I have to go and start it each time I reboot. It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.

For the past several years I have grown fond of ver. 11.0...I have installed many programs with that verison. I have checked out the Live ver. of 11.3, and I like it allot but I'm wondering if I can some how check the software available for 11.3 to see if the same program/s are available with ver. 11.3. In other words can I run the Live CD, click on the Yast package installer and look for the same programs I have with ver. 11.0 ?
