I am trying to install the locate and the updatedb command as they were not intially installed during the desktop installation of linux. How do I do this

Presumably I create /etc/updatedb.local but what do I put into that? With all those $-signs I'm pretty much lost. Could anyone post his/her example of a PRUNE_FS statement or point me to some reference where I can read up on this

I recently installed 10.04, in the process of installing MythTV... I'm looking for installed files and find bash no longer finds updatedb or locate commands. I did change /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname to change the name of the box. Could this have hosed those commands? I tried them as root... sudo -i, same result...

This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded tarballs of gpg2 (gnupg-2.0.16), compiled it, compiled dependencies etc. and have it installed on my Suse 10 box. Now I want to install it on another suse 10 box. Instead of doing the compiling/installing steps once again, is there a good way I can package gpg2, or tar it on my server, so it can be easily installed on the other server? Also, when I installed gpg, it was installed everywhere, /usr/local/lib, /usr/local/bin, my download dir etc. How do I pick the needed libraries and executable to make the package? maybe I Should specify a path for the gpg to be installed, then tar the whole directory. how to do the first part?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi hav a system which is never connected to internet. I had installed opensuse 11.1 from dvd.But the media files r not working. I had installed gstreamer all sets. And tried to install codecs using a .ypm file i downloaded from the opensuse server but not working without internet. I can download any files in other system and copy it to my system.

Setup:
1. Desktop running WinXP
2. Lenovo S10e netbook running Win7RC1 (just expired.) no DVD drive.
3. 1 DVD by Novell and Lenovo with "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (For recovery select Restore System from the initial Menu.) November 2008"
4. 4GB USB drive. Laptop can boot from it.
Problem:
Need to install the system to the Laptop using the USB drive. Doesn't install.
What I did:
Mostly followed the guide at "Installation without CD - openSUSE.htm" my USB drive is G:
used the HP USB Disk storage format tool to make my USB bootable.
Copied all files from the dvd to the usb drive
Moved G: ooti386loader* to G:
Deleted E: isolinux.bin
Renamed E: isolinux.cfg to E: syslinux.cfg
Downloaded syslinux-3.85.zip from [kernel.org]
Extract syslinux-3.85.zip to c: syslinux
CD'ed to c: syslinuxwin32 directory in a cmd prompt
Ran syslinux -ma E: .....
Result:
Runs all the way through, gets to a windowed program called ">>> Linuxrc v3.0.20 (Kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default) <<<" Code: could not find the openSUSE Repository. Activating manual setup program
Main Menu: Settings, System Information, Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers), Start installation or System, Verify Installation CD-ROM/DVD, Eject CD, Exit or Reboot, Power off Cant find anything on the usb drive (obviously?) so what do I do now?
This is where I'm at and quite stuck... not sure what other flags there are to use, what I have to move around or rename.
I have a box already has openSuse 11 32bits installed. I want to replace it with openSuse 11 64 bits. When I insert the openSuse 11 64 bits CD, I got error message "this is a 32 bit computer. Can not use 64 bit software". so How do I wipe out the old OS (32 bits), and install new OS (64 bits)?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI use Linux with a lot of pleasure almost 6 years... after installing Ubuntu 10.04 Itried to install openSuSE on with Ubuntu prepared partitions, 20GB for / and 120 for /home. I have tried 4 times to install SuSE, but I have each time same problem. Suse installer shows instead 20 and 120GB partitions 16 and 104 GB and insallation was failed with message that PC probably was attacked. Before was installed excellent worked OpenSuSE 10.3. I have no idea. It's PC with AMD 3200 64-bit, 1GB DDR, Nvidia7300SE.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having issue with trying to put the 11.3 DVD iso to a USB pendrive...I've verified the ISO md5sum matches, formatted the pendrive to FAT32, unmounted and finally done:
# isohybrid openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso
# dd if=/path/to/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync
Everything appears to work fine, but once I try to boot I geterror saying no installation CD/DVD is not found and is asking for software installation repository, so I select the media as hard drive since if I select cd/dvd drive, the messag "no repository found"...then I select the USB drive (sdc1 4.2GB, iso9660, openSUSE-DVD) then it asks for "enter the source directory"...I'm not certain what to enter there, so I just point to the root directory "/" and installation continues...followed by "no new driver updates found"....so GUI starts up again...it loads kernel modules, to confirm "usb-storage"...then a message "the partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the portioning tool parted,...." I click OK...finally I get stuck on
Can "locate" or "updatedb" be set to print file names with white space properly escaped? For example, I want it to print, "/home/USER/My Files" and not, "/home/USER/My Files". I've googled around, read the man pages, checked the forum, and I'm still stuck.

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

When i am adding a user using "useradd -d /home/test test" or "useradd test", it is now creating the home directory, whereas when i am using the graphical mode and going through several menu options, i am getting the home directory.

I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly.The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this

View 2 Replies View RelatedNew Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I am using SUSE 11.0 KDE 4.0 . My system has root user, one normal user and both are me only. I am using only 'user account' only.I used to install softwares from 'user account' by using YAST.
Now my problem is - when i am trying install a rmp file through YAST, it ask root password by a dailog window. when i entered the root password it is giving error

I have successfully installed Slackware 13.1 with the help of a brilliant guide and some reading on my own. And I am loving it. I have installed few applications and feel that the I understand the system more better than any other linuses I tried.
But, the initial fonts look quite out of focussed(can't find a word) or simply ugly?
I searched and found few threads and a dugan's blog but I got confused as to what to do exactly....How to make fonts beautiful or focussed?... This is my first query.....
Also, a second query is about updating the system...I installed Slackware 13.1 DVD without KDE( Yes I love xfce). As I see I used the "slackpkg" utility to update.
First, uncommented the # sign from one of the mirrors in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and ran slackpkg update
And the next time when I ran the same, it said "No changes in change log between last update and now". I gather it means my system is upto date but I have doubt about it. How do I conform if the system is upto date? Should I necessarily subscribe to the mailing list? It a thing I haven't done yet.
I am looking for a procedure to recover the initial installed state of my system with out over writing user data areas. The install procedure has the phrase "will remove all linux partitions" which interpret to mean data partitions, not just /bin and /. Additional background - Was attempting to build a 32 bit cross compile of Mozilla/Firefox on a x86_64 configuration and had a conflict with libgl. Online advice was to remove duplicate libgls from the system (that was bad advice). This led to running yum update.
When I restarted the system I know longer had wireless networking, ntfs mounts and possibly other features I had installed. Further, attempts to update, re-install, erase and reinstall have had no effect on the situation. My assumption is that I need to start with a clean install - which will be about 10-20 hours to reset all the additions I made. But I don't see another solution.
I have been searching for 2 days and cannot find an answer. Apparently Sax2 isn't available in 11.3. It looks as if many are having the same difficulty. I've tried xrandr and tried to edit /etc/X11/Xorg.conf with no success.Copying a working xorg conf file might be a fix, I don't know.
