I just installed the software for my APC UPS on my SUSE 11.2 machine. After some work I finally got it work except I have to go and start it each time I reboot. It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.

OK... I tried everything i could think of... but i still cannot get my Open SUSE 11.1 to mount my samba share at boot! I still don't understand the 11.1 boot sequence. can NE one help me... tell me what files to give you output from... Ty guys P.S. My shares originate from a Windows Server 2003 RC2 machine, and it's dns server doesn't work correctly... so my mount command is

I didn't have any luck finding the solution for not getting opengl working on a SLES11 server with a remote X-Win32 client. As a reference I've used the tool "glxgears" for testing.We have two servers. One (server A) with SLES10 and the other (server B) with SLES11. We use X-Win32 (ver. 9.x) as an X-server on a Microsoft Windows client machine. Both servers are connected to with ssh with X11 forwarding enabled (Xclock works fine on both).Starting glxgears from server A works fine; Three nice gears are displayed.

There was an option in openSUSE about booting an installed system if grub is deleted from the MBR. This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. I know how to mount the root partition where openSUSE 11.3 is installed, but how to proceed?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run a service that listens to a port for instructions from a Windows box. It is called timetobackupservice. I use the following command to run the service ./timetobackupservice from a command line. It seems to run, indicates which port it is listening to, but then hangs up. When I move the cursor, it "enters" a bunch of odd characters and I have to close the command line window. When I check to see if the service is listening to the port (netstat -tulnap) it shows that it is not listening.

Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

We have a SuSE/SLES 9 server that boots from a fibre channel card, using volumes from a NetApp filer.
We previously had the server booting from the LUNs on the filer, but after some tinkering around with the fibre channel BIOS, we have the situation where the LUNS seem to be mounted, the OS boots, starts to initialise everything but then stalls, saying:

I'm running into a strange problem trying to change the service load or boot order on my CentOS 5.3 box.
The service in question is shorewall. When I go to my /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/, I notice that shorewall is listed a S27shorewall. I need it to start much later. So I run a simple command "mv S27shorewall S99shorewall"
I then restart the server. But after the reboot, something has reset it back to S27shorewall.
For those of you who like the background story: I need to change it to S99shorewall, because I need shorewall to start AFTER xend does all its stuff, as xend messes around with the underlying networking of the computer. The xend stuff was at S98 and S99...but I was able to successfully rename them back to S97 and S98, and the rename stuck. I've also renamed other service orders. Those stick. The only one that gets reset is shorewall, always back to S27. I have no clue how to tell what is causing the resetting...

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this

View 2 Replies View RelatedNew Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)

I made some change to my sysctl.conf file and it they doesn't seem to load at boot? Each time I boot I need to send a sudo sysctl -p command to load the new parameter!

I first ran an update from 10.04 (which was working fine, including ext4 FS), and upon rebooting after the update, all I had was a black screen after PetitBoot. I then tried to do a clean install with the 10.10 PPC+PS3 Alternate CD, but same black screen after selecting any type of install from CD in PetitBoot. I then installed the OtherOS that's on the 10.10 CD (KBoot); same black screen. Went back to PetitBoot and tried the PS3 desktop 10.10 CD; same problem. I was almost ready to give up and reinstall 10.04 when I thought of using the "linux-old" option in PetitBoot. This loaded the newly upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 on my HD, with the difference that it's using kernel 2.6.32 instead of 2.6.35. This works fine. So here's my question (at last ): was the PS3 port of 10.10 tested by anyone before being pushed as a release on cdimage.ubuntu.com, or is there an incompatibility with kernel 2.6.35 that was never noticed, except for here where it didn't seem to go anywhere: [URL]? If I'm the only one left on earth with firmware 3.15 and interested in Ubuntu on PS3 at this point.
