I am useing open suse 11.2 dual boot with windows server 2008. Could anybody give some suggestion do I need to upgrade to open suse 11.3. And How I can deal with that and keep my windows.
View 5 RepliesI installed Slackware 13.1 and Windows server 2008, I also installed LILO in MBR, I Found I can boot into slackware, but can't boot into Server 2008. then I　use command bootsect/fixmbr. now I can boot into server 2008, but the problem is I can't boot into slackware. I try to install lilo to supper sector. it's not works. I only can boot my slackware by a USB stick.who can help me to solve this problem? I really need these two systems.

However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

I am trying to install Suse 11 on my new laptop. The laptop has 250GB capacity. As I only use Linux for some scientific programming, I only needed to allocate about 20GB to Linux.
SDA1 is NTFS PQ Service 13.1 GB
SDA2 is NTFS Sys Reserved 101.9 GB
SDA 3 was the mainWindows user partition.
I shrunk this partition to 195GB using GPARTED.
I then tried to add 3 new Linux partitions to the unallocated disc space for usr home and a swap partition. GPARTED informed me that I would need to produce an extended partition to do this.
SDA4 became an extended partition 24.42GB
SDA5 EXT2 10.74 GB
SDA6 SWAP 1.46GB
SDA7 EXT2 11.21GB
When I started the SUSE install, all of the partitions were recognised correctly, but on the Grub details screen (Grub was allocated by SUSE to SDA4) I was warned that as this was beyond 128GB, my computer might not boot correctly. Is this likely to be the case, or do I need to alter something to get SUSE to install. The last thing i want with a new computer is a system that won't boot at all.
I Would like to dual boot my computer for it to have suse linux and windows xp professional I have an 80 GB hard drive partitioned in NTFS is it possible to dual boot and what software do you suggest to partition the hard drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have opened dolphin and some other application (avidemux, dolphin, firefox,etc). in the first window (dolphin) i have a file. i drag it to another window/application and if i release the left-button of mouse, the window/application of the drag destination become active (raise). is it any way to make it to come in front/top (active) once mouse is over window while still dragging, before releasing the mouse? there is "focus" stings (focus under mouse/raise with the delay) in "windows Behavior". the focus under mouse is working fine, but is not working while dragging. it would be very handy to see where i drop the file, especially if i only see a small partition of the destination window, which is behind other windows.

Today I try to shared a folder for Windows XP using GUI in OpenSUSE 11.1. I created a folder --> right click and click on Share --> Check on "Share with Samba(Microsoft Windows)", "Public" and "Writable". Then connect from Windows using //192.168.100.1/sharefolder. It open up but I can only read (no write access as I check on "Writable"). Did I miss something?

There was an option in openSUSE about booting an installed system if grub is deleted from the MBR. This option is no longer available and there is no option for automatic recovery. For these reasons, I want to boot an installed system from command line. I know how to mount the root partition where openSUSE 11.3 is installed, but how to proceed?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy external storage failed and 1 file system related was damaged. When booting OS, it stops on fsck with the damaged file system. Thus the OS will never be up and running, no matter how long I wait. My question is, how to skip the fsck on the damaged file system? Since OS can not be booted up, I have no chance to change /etc/fstab. I just want to boot up the OS and remove the damaged file system manually.

I have a OpenSUSE 11 machine set up as a domain controller. I have set my printer up to be shared to Windows machines logging into the domain. I was able to install the printer to my Windows machines. When you go to the printers folder in Windows, it shows the printer but says "access denied" instead of the usual "ready". If I print to the shared printer the job will go through. I am thinking it is an authentication issue because if I log into Windows machine as "root" and let it build a profile, the printer doesn't show the "access denied" message. How do I allow other users to have access to the printer?

It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.

I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

Everything is working great except the SSH server.Once I installed ssh, it appears to accept my connection, allows me to log in, and then freezes Putty, not allowing me to type anything into the terminal.If I wait several minutes, I'll get a message saying that the connection was closed. After that, the server won't accept connections.Sometimes it'll start accepting connections again, but after a while, the connection will close on its own. Other times, I will be unable to get a connection until I restart the server.If you guys needs any more information, please let me know. What could be causing this odd behavior?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Redhat 5 playing nice as it authenticates against windows server 2008. But I ran into issues trying to get Redhat 6 to do it as well.
Here is where I stand on my redhat 6 box:
I have my certificates working between the windows and the redhat box.
From Root user I can SU to an Active Directory user. getent works. I can see all the users info. ldapsearch works with the CA certificate so my SSL handshake is working. I do not suspect cert issues
But when I try to login as active directory on my Redhat 6 box I get told I used an invalid password. The password works just fine on the windows server, so I didn't fat finger anything. I am just confused as to why I can have getent and ldapsearching but can not login.
I have turned off iptables on redhat and the firewall on 2008 server to see if that would change the situation but no luck.
I noted that in Redhat 6 I need to config SSSD rather then NSCD.

What I maybe doing wrong or leaving out in my configurations.
I can get a connection to Windows server 2008 using rdesktop 1.6, but after a few seconds the connection is dropped and I get a message of and internal licensing error. I think rdesktop 1.6 uses rdp 5.x, and WIndows server 2008 uses rdp 6, but there must be some way to get a linux terminal server client to connect to Windows Server 2008.

OpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

I have updated Samba to 3.5.4 after read that default 11.2 version have too many bugs. Now, when I try to join the Domain MYDOMAIN.LOCAL via yast i have only an undebuggable error "unknown error". For yast, my Suse is joined but i'm unable to authenticate, i can't see "MYDOMAIN.LOCAL" at KDM login and if i try to lookup forest i have this error:

I am trying to mount a shared drive on a Windows Server 2008 machine using a Linux machine (Fedora 13). I try mounting by
# mount //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER
and I get mount error(13): Permission denied.
I have tried other options like # mount -t nfs //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER -o username=USERNAME and the same thing with different filesystem types (ntfs, smbfs, cifs).

verified security/sharing settings
for the drive

I am familiar with Windows Server 2008 but I have never configured a system from scratch on my own. The computer I'm using used to have Windows 7 for sharing folders to a Linux server. I have just switched to Server 2008 and have not been able to mount anymore.
One thing that I think is that I tried setting up an identity mapping solution; however, I do not have a domain controller setup. I am still functioning on a workgroup.
I want to dual boot Windows Server 2008 r2 and Ubuntu 10.10 . First, I installed Server 2008 r2 then Ubuntu. After the installation, Grub only found Ubuntu, and "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" on dev/sda1. The Windows OS is installed on dev/sda2. When i load "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" it does a chdsk, then reboot the PC.
How can i make grub find the Windows OS?
Edit: The partition on dev/sda1 is called System Reserved
