Ubuntu :: Desktop Fails To Load Past Loggin / Get It To Work?
Jul 14, 2010
I'm not entirely sure if this is where this goes, but problems occurred after messing around with desktop interface areas
Basically after logging in my screen turns black and then seems to fail out back to the log in screen. No error message, nothing. log in -> black screen -> log in
Ive tried to boot in fail safe gnome with exact same result.
Problems started after these two actions
1) was trying to get compiz to handle the desktop, so I disabled "show desktop" through Nautilus ( I re-enabled before logging off however)
2) was stupid and tired and accidentally uninstalled libglib2.0-0, libglib2.0-data, and several other packages through the software center interface. Ive re installed these through root access but I must be missing some files because it still fails to start
Because im not entirely sure what is causing the problem ( failure to render, or missing crucial packages) im not sure how I should go about trying to repair. Is there any to restore factory settings and programs without blitzing out current drivers and apps ?

OpenSUSE is starting to drive me a bit nuts. Actually what I'm trying to do is simply install VMWare server on a recent as possible SUSE and run 2 virtual machines, both the same SUSE. Of course 11.2 32 bit doesn't run VMWare server 2 so it's back to 11.1. The trouble is, 11.1 won't install properly on my PC.
The install process, booted and installed from the 11.1 network install iso image on CD, runs fine. The PC reboots from hard disk and stops at the grub prompt. I've tried the auto-repair option and reinstalled it from scratch a second time always with the same results. It seems the root partition is hosed, and that's where my understanding hits its limits. Can anyone help?
Incidentally should anyone be able to advise on the VMWare conundrum I'd also be interested. Maybe in another thread...

Every time I log in Ubuntu 10.04, everything works fine, but there is this annoying problems with the sound volume and icon: It always appears as muted, and if I try to turn the volume up, or down, it wont make any difference, it stays muted.
Plus, if I try to shut it down, it always redirects me to the log in screen, always. The only way to turn down the laptop is, then, to unplug the wire.

I just recently put Ubuntu 10.10 for ppc on a Cd-R and installed it onto an old Mac I had found. The installation seemed perfectly fine I booted the computer and was presented to boot with two options "Linux" and "old" or to press enter and boot default. I had decided to boot default and it reaches the splash screen where the loading bar advances two dots and then completely stops.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell computer of mine but I can't get it to boot past the loading screen. I'm using 10.04 live CD. At the loading screen (boot, memory test, etc..) I select to boot the live CD and after that, I get a black screen followed by no signal from my monitor. My monitor is a 42" LCD TV (I had plans to turn this PC into a HTPC using Ubuntu and Boxee). I know Linux will work on this box, because it has in the past. Now, before I used to have an ATI Radeon X 1300 PCI-E card and now I am using an ATI Radeon 2900GT, and since cannot boot.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this to work?

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.
I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.

So up until I updated from Opensuse 11.3 to 11.4, I hadn't any issues with my network connection. At least none worth mentioning. Once I installed 11.4, I've had weird issues with varying lengths of connection. Sometimes I can't connect anywhere, sometimes I can only get to the router, sometimes I'm 100%. I'd fiddle with YAST until everything worked. I honestly have no clue whether or not anything I did had any effect.
Enough of the iffy history, here's what's happening now. For the past few weeks up until last night, I have been at 100% connectivity. I never turned off my computer until last night (it just shut itself off, like the cord was unplugged. I dunno what happened, maybe it was my foot, maybe the PSU. I think it has happened before.). When I turned it back on, I was only able to connect as far as my router (192.168.1.1, a D-Link Gaming router that has always been very good to me). I could not make it to my modem (192.168.0.1, a Quest DSL modem. Once I can get here, then usually I'm good to go 100%).
I tried again this afternoon, and no change. I then get the crazy idea to unplug the ethernet cable from it's PCI-card home and return it to the onboard port (which I long ago declared defunct). Immediately after plugging it into that port, I ran "ping 192.168.0.1" and I started getting returns. I open up Firefox and try to load an external page, and nothing happens. I go back to the console that I was pinging from, and it had stopped. I start pinging my router, and no luck. What I conclude from my little experiment is that the router is not at fault.
1. It did not change at all between being at 100% and being at 0% after reboot.
2. I was able to get returns from the modem, past the router, for a brief period of time while using the defunct ethernet port.
Since I never had these problems before updating to 11.4, I'm inclined to believe that it was the update that started these problems.

I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

Here I was, humming happily along on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine, when thanks to a stupid Windows proprietary task that I NEEDED to perform, I rebooted in Windows later this morning. When I was done with the task, I tried to reboot again back in Ubuntu, but lo & behold, it wouldn't start. I tried several times, I tried recovery mode, I tried previous versions, and NADA! It's as if the kernel only existed in name only. So now I don't know what to do, because I cannot access my Ubuntu files from Windows (which luckily still works), plus I cannot abide the idea of having to give up on Ubuntu for good and going back to Windows! I'm willing to reinstall the whole thing again, so I've downloaded a new .iso image to create a new install CD, but I cannot seem to successfully create the new CD image either. I'm tempted to download Wubi, but I'm not sure if that's a permanent solution either.

I use Compiz, on Ubuntu 10.04, and notice that Emerald sometimes fails to load at login, leaving all apps window-less, and I have to do an Alt+F2 and "emerald --replace" to bring it back..Any ideas what can cause this? I like to keep my UI looking nice, and that's why I use those utilieis, they run fast on my setup

I remember doing an update, checking mail and chatting with friends... then.. I shut down... that was 3 days ago. Last night i booted... and... and.. ... I could not log in...
I saw the Ubuntu 10.10 with the four dots underneat. Two of the dots lit, then the screen went blank... I stared at the blank screen for maybe... er... 2 minutes... then force shutdown (hold power button)
Doing that brought up the... linux kernal list with the fail safe... ok.. lets try the fail safe... i did a package repair, grub repair, and decided to boot normally... still nothing...
when i force shut down and rebooted, it goes straight to ... um.. blank screen where it suppose to be log on... I attempt to press ALT-F2. It showed Symphony Login (symphony being the name of my lappy) and it showed a cursor to enter user name etc... but it was only shown for 1.235254 seconds.

I had a dual boot Kubuntu 9.04 - FC 11 and decided to upgrade to Kubuntu 9.10. Recalling that I had issues with my ATI card drivers when I installed Kubuntu8.10 on my laptop, I decided to install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers. After the installation was complete I received a message warning me that if the X server fails to load I should run "aticonfig --initial -f". Indeed the X Server didn't load (after I logged in the screen flushed and went black). So I reinstalled Kubuntu 8.10 from a CD I without formating the respective partition. But the problem perists, X server fails to load. Even worse my menu.lst file has been changed and I can't boot FC11.

I am a long time ubuntu user (4.10) and have had a fair bit of experience installing ubuntu and the many mishaps along the way.
So after having no internet for a year I decide to try the new 10.04 flavour by ordering the cd from the site.
Installation went well, no hiccups. But when I restarted the comp it went straight to Xp, so I thought I'll just use the SGD to boot the partion anyway and fix this small problem later.
After SGD confused sda with sdb, I figured out that GRUB2 is now the standard boot loader.
So thats where I am lost, I have searched the forums quickly (25 pages or so..) and realise that I am not going to fix this easily or by trial and error.
here's some info

WinXP SP3

After an almost flawless upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, the desktop doesn't quite finish loading: when I log in I am left with unmovable but otherwise usable windows chiefly noticeable by their lack of title bar. I can kick the system into completing a normal startup by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "visual effects/normal" whereupon it pops up with "desktop effects not available" and subsequently the title bars all return and everything works as normal - even compositing (meta city). Something appears to be choking it at the last hurdle. How I might go about debugging it. Failing that, what do I need to purge/reinstall to make it work normally?

I am unable to load the GUI in opensuse 11.1. When booting I get the normal opensuse loading screen but about half way through the screen goes black. If I hit alt-f1 I can see the start up info. The problems looks like when it tries to load gdm. It shows a couple of Warnings saying "GdmDisplay: display lasted .8135.. seconds. The findal warning says "GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors." I did do a couple of updates yesterday before shutting down but am not sure what they were.

I installed kde and xfce to try them out (explained further in my other threads - almost a prequel to this if you like) and they were fine and dandy. Decided I wanted to lose xfce and did that (as explained in said previous threads) via synaptics. However, not only did it get rid of xubuntu, it got rid of the option to loggin on kubuntu as well (which I didn't want to do - I decided I wanted to keep kubuntu). I'm pretty sure that kde is still here on my computer because when I boot my computer with ubuntu, I get the kubuntu loading screen with blue background. I want to be able to log in with kde but I don't have the option at loggin.

I have two computers running Kubuntu 9.10 (using the upgrade paths from 8.04 and so on) one running 32bit and the other running 64 bit and I have the following problem: On the 32bit version installing the repository package for Digikam, everything works just fine. On the 64bit version I have two problems:
First digikam won't start due to the following error:
digikam: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/digikamimageplugin_freerotation.so:
undefined symbol: _ZN7Digikam11ImagePlugin17setActionCategoryERK7QSt ring
I'll have to delete all digikamplugin files from /usr/lib/kde4 and then it works from the command line. It appears that everything is working as it should.Second, starting digikam from Lancelot does nothing.

just installed ubuntu 9.10 besides the existing windows vista partition. Everything worked smoothly. However, after I let vista go into hibernation and then started up the system again, the grub was unable to load. Instead, I got the command prompt 'GRUB rescue'. When I boot from the live CD and try to open the ubuntu partition on 'places' in the desktop environment, I get the message that it cannot be done because windows has hibernated on the other partition, and that I need to delete the hibernation file. What do I do to get the GRUB to load? Now I am stuck with booting from the CD, and I cannot access Vista at all.

The last thing I remember doing before this is typing export DISPLAY=:0.0 in the tty1 terminal.
