OpenSUSE :: Run Apps On Krunner - Alt + F2 - Gets Freeze For About 10 Seconds
Mar 19, 2010
Sometimes when I type something to run apps on krunner (alt + f2) it gets freeze for about 10 seconds. I say sometimes but sure it happens most of times I use krunner. Other times I write it on but then the app doesn't come up until about 10 seconds...Does someone else have this issue on krunner? KDE 4.4.1, openSUSE 11.2.

Firefox, pidgin, thunderbird, intelliJ, even emacs!!!, or perhaps it's gnome in general will periodically stop responding. All named except emacs tend to gray out while this freeze is happening.

Sometimes, running "nvidia-settings" will cause the whole desktop to freeze for about 5-10 seconds, spike the Xorg CPU usage up to 100%, until the settings appear where everything goes back to normal.
Running "nvidia-settings" from a terminal does not show any output and restarting X does not help. Any ideas how to figure out what is happening, any places to look for log files?
I am using an up-to-date openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit), KDE 4.5.2, an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT and the proprietary NVIDIA driver 260.19.12, which I installed manually following the instructions from

I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. openSUSE is really great, but I hate the freeze when I startup my computer. Desktop appears but I cannot do anything. This takes approximately 20 to 30 seconds and than my plasmoid-networkmanager shows network is up. As from this moment freeze is over.
I already tried to switch off ipv6 and put nomodeset in grub, though this is not helping. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can solve this?

Printing from KDE no longer works. Opening a simple text file in Kwrite and attempting to print the document causes kwrite to hang. While Googling on this problem I came across this thread. The case is very similar.
[URL]
Running kwrite from the command line does not provide any information to diagnose this behavior. Printing works from Firefox and OpenOffice. Printers produce test pages ok.
This behavior came about after the HP C6380 stopped scanning. During my investigations I was forced to reinstalled hplip. This may have broken something.

I'm experiencing some weird short freezing issues in Squeeze and / or unstable. Everything works as usual, then the system will freeze for some seconds if I don't do anything, or resume faster if I move the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard. I thought it was a wifi related problem, as I have an intel iwl4965 , here is what I often see in dmesg:
[ 2608.910307] iwl4965 0000:06:00.0: Queue 4 stuck for 2000 ms.
[ 2608.910317] iwl4965 0000:06:00.0: On demand firmware reload

[I'm not sure if this is the right forum. This is the closest I've found]. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (dual boot with Windows XP SP3). After Ubuntu starts, it takes about 10 seconds, and the computer halts. No screen/mouse/keyboard activity. If I start Ubuntu under Recovery Mode, with failsafeX, it doesn't happen.
In the Windows all is fine. What did I wrong? [My CPU is: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2140 @ 1.60GHz, if it matters...]

I've been having this issue since at least 9.10. I'm randomly encountering disk thrashing and application freezing which lasts around 30 seconds. Some applications seem to encounter this more often than others. Firefox and Picasa are pretty reliable at reproducing the issue. It also happens often when I'm using Transmission. CPU usage is not unusually high during the 'thrashing' sessions. Running iotop hasn't shed any light on the problem either. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this or maybe someone could give me some clues. I'm running a dell inspiron 530 with ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I have 4gb of ram. Here is my 'df -h' if that is helpful.

Yes im refering to Windows Degrade and how over time windows just running will degrade and start causing errors. DLLs go missing and bizzare things. Ive seen wierd things happen on a windows machine that is dedicated to one function. Well to my point, recently I have been having many linux issues, not like normal or anything throughout the years I have experimented with linux though.
1)entering fullscreen on VMware crashes linux sometimes (no Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Alt+F2 ect)
2)using a different monitor haults the virtual machine while other monitors do not (I have 4)
3)Java apps freeze and require moving the window offscreen (below the screen) to redraw
4)general linux freezing
5)glitch with xinerama that repeatedly teleports mouse between two monitors causing the system to be unusable (no Ctrl+Alt+F2 or anything either)
At first I thought they were all related to VMware but they may not be. I run VMware everyday for my slingbox and light EXE-ing when wine isnt an option. So I may not be asking for fixes to all these problems but whats going on? Ive seen linux installs last years and believed linux to not degrade.

I had to install Eclipse 3.5 without using Yast or zypper because i) version 3.5 is not packaged yet and ii) I needed 3.5 to work with a specific eclipse plug-in. The installation was a simple uncompression of an tar.gz archive. Now I would like to start eclipse from Krunner but it does not seem to know anything about my install (as expected!). My 2 attempts to make Krunner aware of my eclipse install did not work. What I have tried was:- add an alias in my .bashrc file - add a $PATH call to the eclipse directory in my .bashrc

I am running ubuntu 10.10, and I wanted to try KDE. So I downloaded and installed it, but when I go to run KDE, the desktop comes up and then I get an error report screen for krunner. If I close it, another pops. If I don't close it then a new window pops up saying something happened to krunner. What the message is I was finally able to get (see below). I did try logging into KDE into a new user account (one that was totally new. No profile info was created before) and the same thing was happening on that account as well.

The most immediately apparent consequence of upgrading to KDE 4.4.3 is that Krunner is very slow or freezes completely. The run command from Lancelot is still quick and responsive and launches app's immediately, unfortunately Krunner takes an age to launch the application and sometimes does nothing at all.

I just recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu + KDE and I can't for the life of me find a suitable 'msconfig' replacement. My issue in particular is with the 'krunner' process which I want to replace with 'synapse', but I just can't seem to find where to disable 'krunner' from starting up with the system. The 'Autostart' module in 'System settings' shows nothing. Also 'Pidgin' and 'Cairo-dock' start with the system and I can't find where this information is located. I'd like two things: a way to easily manage applications and services running when the system starts up, and a way to prevent the 'krunner' process from starting up again.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 - fresh install (no upgrade). However with 11.4 there is a very annoying bug (actually, two of them, but I'll post the other one to a different thread): every few seconds (10 or 15) the system 'freezes' for a split second. anything that is going on (visible) freezes for half a second or so. If you're in the process of moving the mouse, the pointer will stop dead in its tracks for that half second, and then when it resumes (a half-second later) it picks up from where "it would have been" had there not been a freeze (it will jump from one position on the screen to the next, as per the actual movement of the mouse. If I have a window (a terminal window for example) that is scrolling output, the scrolling will stop for the same half-second. I did a quick monitor with 'top' refreshing every tenth of a second, and when this freezing occurs is *seems* to coincide with spikes in the kernel thread 'kworker'. I have a hunch that this *may* be due to new built-in NVIDIA drivers that are in 11.4 that I wasn't using in 11.2 (where I compiled the driver from scratch) as I have seen a few posts about issues with this and the 'nouveau' driver - this is just a hunch. Not that dmesg also reports this log quite frequently:
[code]...
This is a FAST system (3 GHz and four cores) that is otherwise running IDLE, other than logging into KDE. So it's not a case of high CPU usage or I/O usage. The video card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2). I have installed a basic KDE 64-bit distribution, using NO proprietary repositories - it's essentially and "out-of-the-box" install.

I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

Does anybody have strigi krunner plugin work as search-engine and not as lottery? Same goes with search desktop containment - when typing in few letters from the file name, it never founds the file, only displaying ca 10 random files based on content(i guess) instead.

I have Kubuntu 10.10 64-bit, which was running fine until I did a bunch of apt-get software installs to permit me to compile YaWP weather plasmoid. In the process I am now at KDE 4.6.2, and my system is now non-functional, not able to start KDE desktop.
When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.
I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.

Movie and translation are 32 seconds out of sync. There are 2 ways to resolve:
1. edit all zillion lines of translation (daunting, I couldnt find tool)
2. add 32 seconds of nothing or whatever to the beginning of a video file
No2 may be quicker, but I do not know how.. I am not good with ffmpeg... also, if I want to join some 32 seconds, lets say of my XVid recording, I need to prepare it to be the same as film, so it is also complicated. how to add 32 sec? I tried openShot (couldnt find option). Cinellera is giving me strange errors, about audio codec and something I dont understand... I am confused in using both tools

I have fixed the problem by disabling "Processor Power Managament" in the Bios.

We have a weird problem with two PC's running SUSE 11.3. The built in PC speaker beeps every 2 seconds when you are typing.
One of the PC's (an old celeron with intel graphics, 32 bit suse 11.3) has had this problem for at least a year but we don't use the keyboard much. The other one is a Core i5 with nvidia graphics (suse 11.3 64 bit). This machine was fine until it was upgraded from suse 11.2 (with zypper dup).
It is like a torture and is driving us nuts. It only does this in X11 - text mode is fine. It's probably something obvious but we are stumped.

I recently downloaded openSUSE (gnome) from the main site. I used ImgBurner to put it on a cd and boot it. After I double click the installation on the desktop, it opens then closes after like 30 seconds. I dont know if the ImgBurner did not burn it on the disk properly, or if my computer is just retarded.

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:
jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::1:1.0".
No protocol specified
No protocol specified
[code]....
(y2base:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: ::1:1.0
Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).

If I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?
I use (normally) OpenSuse/SUSE Linux
