I recently downloaded openSUSE (gnome) from the main site. I used ImgBurner to put it on a cd and boot it. After I double click the installation on the desktop, it opens then closes after like 30 seconds. I dont know if the ImgBurner did not burn it on the disk properly, or if my computer is just retarded.

Evolution was working properly but now whenever I try to open it the program opens, flashes up on the screen then disappears. If I click on the little envelope at the top of the screen I can get both the compose new message screen and also the contacts to open, but not the main mail program. If I open the contacts screen and click on the mail button to switch to it that way, the program instantly disappears again. I have also tried applications/office/evolution but that has the same result.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 12(Constantine) i686 installed on my PC as my O.S. i got a porblem that when i was trying to install the a bundle(NetBeans IDE 6.8 with JDK 6 update 20) after sometime my PC restarted itself due to electricity problem. When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

i have hd encryption activated on my swap and home disks. now every 20 min or so (not really periodic but definetly reproduceable) my system hangs completely for about 4 - 10 sec while the hd led is on. i have a dual core cpu which makes this even more odd. could this be a side effect of hd encryption especially on the swap partition?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
Same problem with 11.4 x64 DVD version (gnome default). System ends with text before showing logon screen allso in failsafe

Why does YaST close after one installs a package? Is there a way to disable this annoying feature?

Is there any way I can install an older version of kde like the on on suselinux 10.1 because the newer desktops are very unstable on my computers. stuff closes, stuff freezes temperarly, fortunetly nothing perminent has happened yet but its been threating to abolish my computer. Ive had other cases like this end up making me reinstall my operating system and Id really like to just fix the problem before it happens. page down is overrun with this horribly lagging scroll.buttons look like there clicking occasionally and again it closes programs and has logged me out once already.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with LibreOffice 3.3.3.1 (from the libreoffice stable repository) and some (not all!) .doc files. When opening some .doc files LibreOffices starts and directly closes . The same problem occurs (for the same files) with LibreOffice from the unstable repository. When I go back to the LibreOffice version (3.3.1) shiped with 11.4. everything works fine. Hence, if you have problems with some .doc files downgrade to 3.3.1.

I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.

As far as i know VLC is the best media player for linux bc it suppurts all file types. But there is one anoying problem - when i want to listen to song it opens VLC, but when i open another song it opens another new VLC window. And this problemug or whatever didnt apear in Windows version VLC player.

kfmclient openURL $HOME; my konqueror does not open in normal explorer like mode instead it's open the FSview (FileSizeView) mode. Where can I change this behavior?
Konqueror opens in full screen every time which is more a nuance than an issue, I just haven't had time to search why; I'm seeing if anyone else has this issue or knows the preset to change how K. starts up. I don't use Konqueror enough. I can right click to take it off full screen mode, but for who ever else who uses it, it can be a nuance.
I also have this same issue with Thunderbird, but I can't get it out of full screen mode there is no menu bar up top to reduce, minimize or close out.
I've asked this on Opera's forum also with no replies yet.When ever I click on a url link, Opera insists on opening two additional identical tabs over what is already there. This happens whether Opera is open already or has to be started from scratch. The link could be in KMail, Akregator or even a link on an applications About box, it makes no difference. I have set Opera up as the default web browser and I am using the following command "opera %u"

I have Suse 11.3 KDE and every time I opened an mp3 file, Amarok opened and closed immediately reporting a new bug everytime. So I followed this thread Amarok Not Launching I have uninstalled Amarok through Install/ Remove software. But I am not able to find this folder to delete, as mentioned in above post: Delete the directory ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok

View 1 Replies View RelatedIf any window opens initially on full screen (maximized) the "desktop effects" switch off. I then have to reset "enable desktop effects".
It happens with any window from any application that opens full screen.
If a window is maximized after it has already opened all is fine, it does not stop the desktop effects.

I am putting together a DIY Point Of Sale (POS) system using openbravo pos as the software and openSUSE 11.4 GNOME as the operating system. I am running into difficulty with the cash drawer. It's a UPOS 2020 USB cash drawer and is fully recognised by openSUSE.
My problem is that after I put in the config into openbravo POS is doesn't work. Out of curiousity I decided to run the program as root, redo the config and it now works fine. how I can have my normal user use the device. It's on /dev/ttyUSB0 btw.
I have kubuntu since I like KDE, but I loathe Kubuntu's package manager gui. To solve that, I installed gtk and the Ubuntu Software Center.Every time I hit install for any package in the software center and give my password, the window closes. The installation completes, but I cannot navigate to any page listing the package that is being installed except the "installation in progress" page without the window closing

View 9 Replies View RelatedSometimes in BBC iPlayer - Bigscreen the fullscreen video does not open on top, and then none of the lirc remote control commands (irxevent) function, not even Escape (nor Alt-TAB, which would bring the fullscreen on top if I used the keyboard - but sitting in the TV couch I would prefer using the remote only).
This often happens on my SuSE 10.2 partition, especially when wanting to resume a video, but never happens on my Kubuntu 9.10 partition. Both are 32-bit using KDE 4.3.5 Firefox 3.5.8 and Adobe Flash 10,0,45,2.
How can I get the fullscreen on top??
I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 - fresh install (no upgrade). However with 11.4 there is a very annoying bug (actually, two of them, but I'll post the other one to a different thread): every few seconds (10 or 15) the system 'freezes' for a split second. anything that is going on (visible) freezes for half a second or so. If you're in the process of moving the mouse, the pointer will stop dead in its tracks for that half second, and then when it resumes (a half-second later) it picks up from where "it would have been" had there not been a freeze (it will jump from one position on the screen to the next, as per the actual movement of the mouse. If I have a window (a terminal window for example) that is scrolling output, the scrolling will stop for the same half-second. I did a quick monitor with 'top' refreshing every tenth of a second, and when this freezing occurs is *seems* to coincide with spikes in the kernel thread 'kworker'. I have a hunch that this *may* be due to new built-in NVIDIA drivers that are in 11.4 that I wasn't using in 11.2 (where I compiled the driver from scratch) as I have seen a few posts about issues with this and the 'nouveau' driver - this is just a hunch. Not that dmesg also reports this log quite frequently:

This is a FAST system (3 GHz and four cores) that is otherwise running IDLE, other than logging into KDE. So it's not a case of high CPU usage or I/O usage. The video card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2). I have installed a basic KDE 64-bit distribution, using NO proprietary repositories - it's essentially and "out-of-the-box" install.
I have something that is poling my hard drive about every two seconds. It's really not necessary I don't think. I am not sure how to find out what process it is. My memory usage is pretty low and I am not using any swap.How do I go about tracking the culprit down?

Movie and translation are 32 seconds out of sync. There are 2 ways to resolve:
1. edit all zillion lines of translation (daunting, I couldnt find tool)
2. add 32 seconds of nothing or whatever to the beginning of a video file
No2 may be quicker, but I do not know how.. I am not good with ffmpeg... also, if I want to join some 32 seconds, lets say of my XVid recording, I need to prepare it to be the same as film, so it is also complicated. how to add 32 sec? I tried openShot (couldnt find option). Cinellera is giving me strange errors, about audio codec and something I dont understand... I am confused in using both tools
