Firefox, pidgin, thunderbird, intelliJ, even emacs!!!, or perhaps it's gnome in general will periodically stop responding. All named except emacs tend to gray out while this freeze is happening.

Sometimes when I type something to run apps on krunner (alt + f2) it gets freeze for about 10 seconds. I say sometimes but sure it happens most of times I use krunner. Other times I write it on but then the app doesn't come up until about 10 seconds...Does someone else have this issue on krunner? KDE 4.4.1, openSUSE 11.2.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been having this issue since at least 9.10. I'm randomly encountering disk thrashing and application freezing which lasts around 30 seconds. Some applications seem to encounter this more often than others. Firefox and Picasa are pretty reliable at reproducing the issue. It also happens often when I'm using Transmission. CPU usage is not unusually high during the 'thrashing' sessions. Running iotop hasn't shed any light on the problem either. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this or maybe someone could give me some clues. I'm running a dell inspiron 530 with ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I have 4gb of ram. Here is my 'df -h' if that is helpful.

My several-weeks-ago-installed squeeze KDE is very slow when browsing the files and directories, and also opening applications as compared to my WinXP.
my system is:
Pentium 4
CPU 2.8 GHz
1.5 GB of RAM
I've installed both Fedora 15 x64 and Fedora 14 x64 on an HP Proliant DL380 G4 with the HP SmartArray SCSI controller, 2x146GB UW320 SCSI drives.The server was running RH v4 with a hardware RAID 1 with uptime of 400+ days with no issues.I broke the HW RAID and made 2x volumes and software RAID. I have another identical server with 4x 146GB UW320 SCSI drives with Fedora 12 x64 and SW RAID, so I figured 14/15 should be the same process.What happens is the server runs great for a while, but when I leave it for a few hours, it becomes non-responsive. I've re-installed 15 and 14 multiple times now and also installed NRPE, which shows load increasing to the point to where the server is non-responsive. It hits high load levels (as reported by NRPE). The load levels appear to be increasing over time. Such as last night:

I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I have a HP Pavilion Dv7 Laptop, 4GB of ram, An AMD Turion X2 processor, my main HDD is 250GB Samsung and my other internal HDD is a 250GB Western digital. I am Very new to Ubuntu and the forums, So i wish to apologize if this is posted in wrong section. Now on to my problem, While using my computer the screen will go gray(all open windows), and my HDD light stays on. I never had this problem before on my other computer that has Ubuntu on it too. And as i said every window goes gray and the HDD light stays on and it happens randomly. It will come back to normal some times but others i have to Force Power down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a GNOME user but because of the release of GNOME 3 i decided that i may have to start using KDE. So i installed KDE 4.6 from the qt-kde debian repository. It works more or less OK but i have a problem with the performance. It just doesn't feel as snappy as GNOME. For example if i have minimized Firefox when i maximize it it takes about a second for the window to draw and until then i just see and empty window. Or when i open nautilus it too takes a little to open and draw the window. Overall KDE seems a little unresponsive. Is this normal? And second, from time to time there seems to be huge performance issues - KDE suddenly becomes very slow - programs take a while to open, and the windows draw even slowlier than what i described previously. Also whenever there is a slowdown (like for example when i start a program) i hear some kind of scratching noises from a my laptop - like there is a heavy hard disk activity. I've heard that kind of noises before when doing something very demanding like compiling or archiving something.
Is there any way to make KDE more responsive and faster. I have disabled strigi and nepomuk.

I'm a total Linux noob, but I've needed a working development server for a while so I've put together an old celeron box running Ubuntu Server 10.10.The box runs fine, as does the Apache and MySQL servers, even if they did take a little while to fine tune!The problem I have is that vsftpd doesn't respond unless I'm logged on locally or via putty. As long as a local user is logged in, it's fine. If I try to connect when noone is logged in, then the connection times out waiting for the server message, and thereafter I have to login and stop / restart the vsftpd to make it work again.I'm not sure if the vsftpd is set to run on boot or on login and I have no idea how to check. Vsftpd is set to allow only local users, of which there is only one - so I can't check if it would work with any user logged in

In the new installation i have a problem with the mouse that did not exist before: some of the radio buttons and some links in web pages are not responsive. further more, while writing this post, the mouse does not change its icon to text icon when i hoover over the post's text. it happens also in web pages when it does not change to hyper-link icon over some links. it seems that there is a certain area in the canter of the screen where it happens.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled Ubuntu at least twice for this problem: Minidlna starts fine for a few minutes, I can see it on the network with my television, windows and even my phone. However, after a few minutes (say one hour), it stops being there. The process keeps running, and is kinda responsive to rescans and restarts. However it becomes unusable after a few minutes. The last reinstall was pretty basic: Installed Ubuntu 9.04, upgraded to 10.04 (servers), installed minidlna, wait and... bam! So there were no conflicts in all that, so what could make minidlna stop being responsive?

If I run the above code it works (mythfrontend restarts) however, there are times when the frontend becomes non-responsive and I'd like to detect a non-responsive state but I don't know how. Additionally, I don't have a keyboard on the mythfrontend, just the remote control.
I installed slackware 13.1 lately to a laptop. its a toshiba satellite m40 185 if it makes any difference. In any case, and while the touchpad works flawlessly, connecting a standard USB mouse to the pc does not power up the mouse (its a microsoft notebook optical mouse) and of course the mouse pointer does not follow the mouse's moves... no clicks either.

One question is: since with the new radeon drivers the xorg.conf file can be missing altogether and X will not cry, does it make any difference to add mouse options in xorg.conf?
Continuing my thought: it must be something else. Kernel doesn't seem to be the problem. The USB subsystem works since usb mass storage devices (that's all I have sitting around) are sensed by the kernel and udev properly. Additionally, the problem persists with the huge kernel.
Before slackware, I used to run fedora on the laptop and both pointing devices worked properly, however I think fedora uses another method of setting up the X server devices..
I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 - fresh install (no upgrade). However with 11.4 there is a very annoying bug (actually, two of them, but I'll post the other one to a different thread): every few seconds (10 or 15) the system 'freezes' for a split second. anything that is going on (visible) freezes for half a second or so. If you're in the process of moving the mouse, the pointer will stop dead in its tracks for that half second, and then when it resumes (a half-second later) it picks up from where "it would have been" had there not been a freeze (it will jump from one position on the screen to the next, as per the actual movement of the mouse. If I have a window (a terminal window for example) that is scrolling output, the scrolling will stop for the same half-second. I did a quick monitor with 'top' refreshing every tenth of a second, and when this freezing occurs is *seems* to coincide with spikes in the kernel thread 'kworker'. I have a hunch that this *may* be due to new built-in NVIDIA drivers that are in 11.4 that I wasn't using in 11.2 (where I compiled the driver from scratch) as I have seen a few posts about issues with this and the 'nouveau' driver - this is just a hunch. Not that dmesg also reports this log quite frequently:

This is a FAST system (3 GHz and four cores) that is otherwise running IDLE, other than logging into KDE. So it's not a case of high CPU usage or I/O usage. The video card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2). I have installed a basic KDE 64-bit distribution, using NO proprietary repositories - it's essentially and "out-of-the-box" install.
So I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 beta 2 two days back. Upon trying to use the system, these were the problems I had:
1. Mouse is absolutely not responsive. Even the cursor is not showing.
2. When I login through keyboard options only once this message flashed "Unity not supported by your hardware switch to classic mode on your next login". It flashed once, took me to the desktop screen where the classic desktop was available and I could not access anything without keyboard shortcuts.
3. When I tried launching firefox, deluge or even tried using the terminal to connect to the net I am unable to connect.
4. My USB devices are not read.
5. I finally tried to do a clean install of 10.10 using the live cd I already have but the OS is not booting from the cd.
As a result I am stuck with a comp which has no mouse, no internet, no usb support, no cd support. Do you guys have any idea how I get it to work again?
I have something that is poling my hard drive about every two seconds. It's really not necessary I don't think. I am not sure how to find out what process it is. My memory usage is pretty low and I am not using any swap.How do I go about tracking the culprit down?

Movie and translation are 32 seconds out of sync. There are 2 ways to resolve:
1. edit all zillion lines of translation (daunting, I couldnt find tool)
2. add 32 seconds of nothing or whatever to the beginning of a video file
No2 may be quicker, but I do not know how.. I am not good with ffmpeg... also, if I want to join some 32 seconds, lets say of my XVid recording, I need to prepare it to be the same as film, so it is also complicated. how to add 32 sec? I tried openShot (couldnt find option). Cinellera is giving me strange errors, about audio codec and something I dont understand... I am confused in using both tools
I had a problem where my system momentarily hanged for a few seconds. Sometimes when opened a window like Dolphin or when I made a window full screen, sometimes when clicking on the screen while watching a DVD or sometimes when I clicked on a button it just froze for a few seconds and responded.
I have fixed the problem by disabling "Processor Power Managament" in the Bios.

We have a weird problem with two PC's running SUSE 11.3. The built in PC speaker beeps every 2 seconds when you are typing.
One of the PC's (an old celeron with intel graphics, 32 bit suse 11.3) has had this problem for at least a year but we don't use the keyboard much. The other one is a Core i5 with nvidia graphics (suse 11.3 64 bit). This machine was fine until it was upgraded from suse 11.2 (with zypper dup).
It is like a torture and is driving us nuts. It only does this in X11 - text mode is fine. It's probably something obvious but we are stumped.
I recently downloaded openSUSE (gnome) from the main site. I used ImgBurner to put it on a cd and boot it. After I double click the installation on the desktop, it opens then closes after like 30 seconds. I dont know if the ImgBurner did not burn it on the disk properly, or if my computer is just retarded.

The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).
If I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

i have hd encryption activated on my swap and home disks. now every 20 min or so (not really periodic but definetly reproduceable) my system hangs completely for about 4 - 10 sec while the hd led is on. i have a dual core cpu which makes this even more odd. could this be a side effect of hd encryption especially on the swap partition?

But when I browse using Firefox, there's a 3-second delay while "looking up", and finally it connects. Any ideas what's causing this? I'm using Gnome and don't have another browser installed to test.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine, all went well. It found an update straight away for my system and it was the Nvidia driver so I installed. However the bar at the top & bottom of my desktop is Grey and not Black like it should be, I've tried applying the "Ambience theme" again in Appearance Preferences but it just stays the same.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes, running "nvidia-settings" will cause the whole desktop to freeze for about 5-10 seconds, spike the Xorg CPU usage up to 100%, until the settings appear where everything goes back to normal.
Running "nvidia-settings" from a terminal does not show any output and restarting X does not help. Any ideas how to figure out what is happening, any places to look for log files?

Running 3.3.2 of LibreOffice under 64bit 11.3. When I open a document (.doc) it opens right away, then the cpu spikes for about 8 seconds during which the app is not usable then all is fine. Renamed .libreoffice and made no difference. Tried with both .doc and .odf document types and the same. If I open a empty doc then the spike is a second or 2.
