I have a fresh debian install on my computer, and I have this weird problem. When I play a song from rhythmbox, it works for 10 to 50 seconds, and then it stops making sound. When I type
alsa force-reload
It reloads alsa, and I can listen to a song again for approx 50 seconds. It is not depended of rhythmbox, because the same problem occures for amarock and banshee. I already installed the package libesd-alsa0 and put esd on, but the problem still occures. What is happening? I wanted to add 1 thing. And that is that I ahve 2 sound devices installed, both supporting alsa. 1 onboard, 1 pci card.
The strange thing is that only from the pci card, I can hear sound out of the speakers (after replugging the jack in the back off course ). But if, after an alsa force-reload, only the onboard sound card is detected, it does play the whole song, but does not output any sound.
Playing videos in ....., etc, is not working. The sound will play for around 30 seconds and then stop. The video will keep playing. I have installed Opera and Google Chrome and the same thing happens in those browsers as well. I have the latest flash plugin installed.when I switch to another user account on the same computer, the video plays just fine, with sound, all the way through.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.
i don't know what the problem is, sometimes i feel it is because of compiz and emerald effact, but when i was ubuntu8.10 user, there was not such problem, it runs smooth.
I want to use a cronjob to start a script running streamripper to record radioshows when I'm not at home. I'm running 10.04 server 32 bit.
I've setup a cronjob via Webmin to start the recording. It runs the following script:

Is there any logfile or way to see why the script is killed or what stops the recording? When executing the script manually the recording runs just fine until I kill the process.
I know this is the kind of vague post that people hate. But I'm having a problem. Every now and then (several times a day), my computer stops responding for several seconds.
I notice it most in Firefox. If I'm typing information in a form (like this one) on a web page, everything just stops. If I keep typing, the text eventually appears, apparently having been stored in a keyboard buffer.
But it's not just in Firefox. I have had the same problem in OpenOffice applications. Things just stop. The computer apears to "think" for several seconds, and then things continue.
After several seconds, everything is okay. So some people may say that this is normal. And while I'm no guru, I have been around computers for a long time, so I remember back in the day when this happened all the time. But I haven't seen it (at least to this extent) in previous versions of Ubuntu (or in Windows).
It's a serious problem.
what I should look at? I have a feeling that there is some setting somewhere (cache, etc.) that is set wrong.
Internet connection has been very unstable on my system latley. Think it was because of last update.
Basically for example i watch a video on ..... and it never fully loads. Even when i browse pages dont fully load and i must wait a few seconds before i press reload.

I boot up Ubuntu 10.04 just fine. The mouse works, but after about 2 seconds or so, it stops moving. Of course, the keyboard keeps working fine. It's like Ubuntu stops getting the signals that the mouse is moving. The mouse is in fine working condition. It works fine on my Windows partition. The mouse just had fresh batteries installed, and the laser light doesn't turn off.
I did just remove an ATI card and go back to my GeForce 8200 onboard graphics card. So I thought it might be a wierd driver problem, so I managed to remove the NVIDIA drivers. Didn't help at all. I also was able to log into a console and update the OS. No help there either. I did try to boot my 10.04 live cd, but my computer hates live cd's for some reason. It wouldn't boot, and I can't remember what I did to make it work when I installed Ubuntu.
I have a problem with my wlan connection. it works for few seconds, then stops for few seconds and then starts again (without interaction from my side). I run Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid. The issue started few days ago. Using ethernet, there is no problem. The problem does not exist with other computers i have, there wifi and internet work continuously and flawless. I ping my wlan router. one sees that connection to the wlan router starts and stops every few seconds... (of course, internet connection then behaves analogous)

I've got a problem with my VLC MediaPlayer (v1.0.3-GoldenEye). During video-playback, my screenbrightness is turned to zero after approx- 30 seconds of playback. After turning the screen brightness to high again, the same thing starts over again. By now, I encountered that changing screen resolutions (e.g. after closing a fullscreen application with a different resolution) also turns my brightness to 0.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.
I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

My Audio stops playing when switching to console from Xorg. When I switch back it continues playing. Is it supposed to be like this? Any way I can make it play continuously? I've already checked the Howtos and this forum for this problem but havent found anything similar.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn almost each mp3 file I try to play, VLC will "lag" during the first seconds. There may be some screeching noise. It looks like vlc can't keep up with the bitrate, and it "skips" some bits.
This doesn't happen with totem (the default media player).
I installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite about a month ago. It worked for about three hours. I installed Wine, and it still worked but the display would sometimes go black for a few seconds. Later that day I rebooted and that was it, no more Ubuntu. It goes through all of the process of booting but then the screen just goes black before I even get to the purple Ubuntu screen. I'm running this on a drive in an enclosure so I simply plugged the drive into another machine ( actually two other machines ), and it works perfectly. I have an old Vista drive that I put in the Toshiba and that works just fine, so it's not a pure hardware issue. Just to be sure I wiped the Ubuntu drive and re-installed, this time without installing wine. No Toshiba love. Just the black screen. I even made a flash drive with the loader and iso from the Ubuntu site. Same deal. It starts to boot from the flash and then just goes black where you would normally expect the purple Ubuntu screen. This thing is driving me nuts and I am at a point where I really need this machine working and will be faced with simply wiping the Ubuntu drive and installing Windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a very fresh and basic install of the weekly jessie build (this week). I've installed nvidia drivers, some non-free plugins, virtualbox, basic system tools, etc. The issue is while playing in audacious, the song will freeze for about 5 seconds. It's always around 5 seconds. Sometimes it's once or twice per song, sometimes I'll play 10 songs without it happening. BTW, all music is on a separate hard drive on an NTFS partition.
In audacious, I'm using the Winamp skin. I noticed when trying to play for the first time, it wouldn't play unless I changed the setting in audacious to use ALSA. That was the only way I could go to Settings and select my SPDIF digital output. But then doing that, other sounds no longer worked (in iceweasel). So I downloaded pavu, was able to select my onboard digital stereo output, set audacious back to pulse audio, and everything now works. Only issue is audacious is freezing every now and then... Is there a driver or module that I need to check for? Is there a way to get everything to use ALSA?
I once tried AV Linux for the low latency kernel but since it was based on Wheezy and I wasn't familiar with repos, everything was extremely outdated, so I migrated away. Should I need an LL kernel for 320kbps audio playback? I haven't sat and watched a full mkv yet, some of those have 1.5mpbs audio.
I've ripped all my cd's in to MP3 using ripit, however, it seems as if ripit added 2 seconds to my mp3's, so how do I shave two seconds off each of my mp3's in one massive folder?

I have a problem that I don't even understand. I have not used linux much, and I am trying to move my small bussines from ms to linux.I started with my first machine, and Ubuntu 10.4. I must say that everything started smoothly. zero problem. I have installed wine and make the tests for our bussiness program, and even printing was almost flawless (must make a small change somewhere because it start printing a little lower than windows and I have preformated receips)So.. it all started when I wanted to use skype. skype installed also without problem, and it seemed to start ok, I make the first call, and after a couple of seconds, no more mic or sound. I thought it was skype, but it seems not.
what I have, is a VT1708 VIA, Onboard sound card.I followed one of the guides in the forum, to see if all is installed and seems to work... and it is. it seems all fine. Even more, I installed the ALSA mixer, and when I enable the mic from there, it works.But, when I open the sound prefferences, the sound card appears in Hardware and Input, when I open it, but some seconds after, it dissapears. Still working from the ALSA thou.... In conclusion, I can not use skype or similar. and the sound dissapears from the system, even if I can use it form the ALSA mixer.... I can't change the other computers to linux unless I prove to the people here that everything is working 100%.... and belive me... today skype phone is a must... in the bussiness.
I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 - fresh install (no upgrade). However with 11.4 there is a very annoying bug (actually, two of them, but I'll post the other one to a different thread): every few seconds (10 or 15) the system 'freezes' for a split second. anything that is going on (visible) freezes for half a second or so. If you're in the process of moving the mouse, the pointer will stop dead in its tracks for that half second, and then when it resumes (a half-second later) it picks up from where "it would have been" had there not been a freeze (it will jump from one position on the screen to the next, as per the actual movement of the mouse. If I have a window (a terminal window for example) that is scrolling output, the scrolling will stop for the same half-second. I did a quick monitor with 'top' refreshing every tenth of a second, and when this freezing occurs is *seems* to coincide with spikes in the kernel thread 'kworker'. I have a hunch that this *may* be due to new built-in NVIDIA drivers that are in 11.4 that I wasn't using in 11.2 (where I compiled the driver from scratch) as I have seen a few posts about issues with this and the 'nouveau' driver - this is just a hunch. Not that dmesg also reports this log quite frequently:

This is a FAST system (3 GHz and four cores) that is otherwise running IDLE, other than logging into KDE. So it's not a case of high CPU usage or I/O usage. The video card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2). I have installed a basic KDE 64-bit distribution, using NO proprietary repositories - it's essentially and "out-of-the-box" install.
I'm running Lucid and have an annoying problem with Rhythmbox: while playing, it constantly accesses the disk, every 2-3 seconds drrrrd drrrrd. Listening to some silent music is horrible - the output of the speakers is lower than the noise of the local disk.
Maybe relevant settings in Edit->Preferences:
Playback -> Network Buffer Size: 1024 kB
Music -> Watch my library for new files: off
Is there anything else one can change? It can't be that difficult to read a <10MB file into memory right from the start and not touch the disk drrrrd every few seconds?! P.S. I verified by turning off the speakers and start/stop playback - the noise there on playback and not if turned off. Reliably.
Just upgraded to 10.10 NBR. Every time I launch banshee it crashes within seconds of opening. I tried nuking ~/.config/banshee-1 and the problem persists.Output from banshee --debug:

1) A movie player that actually can stream the movies without stopping every 12 seconds to reload?
2) I have a soundblaster Xfi sound card that I cannot get to work on Ubuntu 10.4. It has my midi ins and outs on it so my key board and recording suite is shot.
Movie and translation are 32 seconds out of sync. There are 2 ways to resolve:
1. edit all zillion lines of translation (daunting, I couldnt find tool)
2. add 32 seconds of nothing or whatever to the beginning of a video file
No2 may be quicker, but I do not know how.. I am not good with ffmpeg... also, if I want to join some 32 seconds, lets say of my XVid recording, I need to prepare it to be the same as film, so it is also complicated. how to add 32 sec? I tried openShot (couldnt find option). Cinellera is giving me strange errors, about audio codec and something I dont understand... I am confused in using both tools
Sometimes when I type something to run apps on krunner (alt + f2) it gets freeze for about 10 seconds. I say sometimes but sure it happens most of times I use krunner. Other times I write it on but then the app doesn't come up until about 10 seconds...Does someone else have this issue on krunner? KDE 4.4.1, openSUSE 11.2.
