Ubuntu :: Degrade - Java Apps Freeze And Require Moving The Window Offscreen (below The Screen) To Redraw

Feb 11, 2011

Yes im refering to Windows Degrade and how over time windows just running will degrade and start causing errors. DLLs go missing and bizzare things. Ive seen wierd things happen on a windows machine that is dedicated to one function. Well to my point, recently I have been having many linux issues, not like normal or anything throughout the years I have experimented with linux though.

1)entering fullscreen on VMware crashes linux sometimes (no Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Alt+F2 ect)
2)using a different monitor haults the virtual machine while other monitors do not (I have 4)
3)Java apps freeze and require moving the window offscreen (below the screen) to redraw
4)general linux freezing
5)glitch with xinerama that repeatedly teleports mouse between two monitors causing the system to be unusable (no Ctrl+Alt+F2 or anything either)

At first I thought they were all related to VMware but they may not be. I run VMware everyday for my slingbox and light EXE-ing when wine isnt an option. So I may not be asking for fixes to all these problems but whats going on? Ive seen linux installs last years and believed linux to not degrade.

Debian Multimedia :: Basic Qt App Doesn't Redraw Window Properly

Jan 25, 2011

When I run it, the window shows up but Qt doesn't draw in the background. I end up with phantoms from windows behind it: URL...The window will draw the background correctly when I resize it -- MOST of the time. And sometimes there will be a noticeable delay between resizing and drawing in the window.Am I missing some libraries? Is this a bug? Maybe there's something else I can look up to find a solution?

I'm running sid, my window manager is fluxbox, and my video card is a GeForce FX Go5200 64M.I should note that this works perfectly well on another computer I have that's running sid as well.

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Ubuntu :: Moving Bookmarks In Firefox Causes To Freeze?

Feb 6, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop computer which runs a Core 2 Duo at 3.2ghz and I have 2 gig of RAM. I have installed all the latest Ubuntu updates.

In Firefox, I have about 70 bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar. Obviously the bar can't show 70 so most of them are in the dropdown section of the bar on the right. When I add a new bookmark, Firefox adds it to the end of the dropdown. Sometimes I want them to be closer to the top so I scroll down, click and drag it up closer to the top. In Firefox under Windows this works fine. However in Firefox under Ubuntu, as soon as I start to drag it up Firefox turns gray and Ubuntu totally locks up. Everything in Ubuntu freezes. The main bar at the top stays color, only Firefox turns gray. I tried clicking around but it's frozen. I tried pressing Esc, ctrl-alt-delete, and a number of other keys but noting will unfreeze Ubuntu. I have to physically turn off my computer and reboot.

OpenSUSE :: Printing From KDE Apps Causes Freeze?

Jul 28, 2010

OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bit) KDE 4.3.5

Printing from KDE no longer works. Opening a simple text file in Kwrite and attempting to print the document causes kwrite to hang. While Googling on this problem I came across this thread. The case is very similar.

[URL]

Running kwrite from the command line does not provide any information to diagnose this behavior. Printing works from Firefox and OpenOffice. Printers produce test pages ok.

This behavior came about after the HP C6380 stopped scanning. During my investigations I was forced to reinstalled hplip. This may have broken something.

I just moved from the netbook remix of Ubuntu to the normal version... I really didn't like the desktop layout of UNR. Is there a nice way to get that feature on the normal version of Ubuntu?

Programming :: WM-hints And Moving Window?

Sep 7, 2010

I have a toplevel window that I want to place depending on another toplevel window. I use gtk_window_move(widget, x, y); At startup this function is called several times and y is changed ones from 412 to 413 and x is always 0(checked with gdb in netbeans). The window gets placed at x=10 and y=400 or so. If I do not use variables but pure ints for x and y it gets placed correctly even if its the same values. I suspect that my window manager notice this change of y and place the widget for me. Is this correct and how do I tell the WM not to do so?

This change of y is due to window size is just a local size and not the correct one as in X. Can i force uppdates from X to the local cache?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Shortcut For Moving A Window To A Specific Display

Feb 23, 2010

I noticed that while Compiz has every keyboard shortcut imaginable for moving windows between desktops, there's no shortcut for moving a window to a specific display when using dual monitors.

So far, I've found the best method is to use the command line automation tool: xdotool - [url]

Here's what I did:Test out the xdotool in a new terminal window using this command
Code:

This should move your terminal window 100 pixels in from the top left of the leftmost display.

Find out the top-left coordinates of your rightmost display by using the Nvidia X Server Settings tool in Main menu > Administration or via the terminal:

Code:

Go to X Server Display Configuration and click the rightmost Display in the layout section. Its position offset should be displayed in the position field. Make a note of these two numbers.

Create a script to move your window, either to the leftmost screen or the rightmost screen, using this code or similar:

Code:

Remember, the number at the end is an argument that denotes the display (1 for left, 2 for right). Assign a keyboard shortcut to your custom shortcut. Repeat for the right display. Now when you press the keyboard shortcut, the active window should be moved to either the left or right display!

I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze/Blank Screen After Screen Off 11.04?

May 4, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.

If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.

Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?

Ubuntu :: Stop Apps From Stealing Window Focus?

Jun 30, 2010

I have found a couple of posts complaining about this problem but none offering solutions. In a nutshell, I want to prevent ALL programs from creating new windows that steal the keyboard focus away from whatever window I was just using. The most common offender is Synaptic when running updates/installs. I will be typing an email, playing a game, whatever, and all of a sudden a new window will pop up, steal focus, and if I'm not paying enough attention, whatever I'm typing will interact with it and cancel something or say yes to something before I even realize it. Another really bad offender is Firefox with the dialogs to accept cookies or entering/leaving a secure website. I still want all of those dialog boxes to appear but I don't want them to automatically steal focus from my other applications. Another user suggested having them blink in the task bar and I like that well enough if it is possible.

Is there a way to lock the focus to the active program/window unless the end user switches it away (i.e. no stealing)?

One post said something about window rules but gave no details. A lot of posts talk about the mouse cursor position selecting the window option (which I do not want and would not fix this problem anyway). One post said it was fixed in Feisty (guess it came back...)
