OpenSUSE :: What Can Do Beside Formating And Reinstalling Opensuse?

Dec 20, 2009

I have 3 partitions:
1) root (20 GB)
2) home (40 GB)
3) data (250 GB)

I can't install anything anymore because my root partition seems to be full somehow. I do not understand how this is possible. I have only installed kde4 (not gnome) and did not install that many software. I always have been fine with this setup until now. What can I do beside formating and reinstalling opensuse? Is there a way to check if something else is wrong? I really do not believe I have that much data installed.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstalling OpenSUSE And Preserving /home Partition?

Sep 29, 2010

I'd like to reinstall openSUSE 11.3 on a pc and would like to preserve the /home partition. The current partiton structure is

sda1 /boot
sda2 /swap
sda3 /extended partition
sda4 /
sda5 /home

When the installer gets to the point to set up the partitions it offers something like

sda1 /
sda2 /swap
sda3 /home

I'm not sure which option to take now. I assume I choose the option to edit the partitions but I'm not clear how to preserve the /home as it's now got a different partition number or does that no matter as long as I choose not to format it? Also, to replicate the original partition structure I'd need to delete the partitions and add them in the correct order but would that destroy the /home?I'm a bit confused with how it will work.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstalling / Upgrading While Moving To A New HDD

Dec 29, 2010

I'm a plain user of Open SUSE 10.2 for more than six months now on a dual boot machine (Vista Ultimate) and I'm 80% mostly on Linux now but because of my job I still have to keep windows.

My 1TB HDD is full and I've got a new 1TB HDD to add to my system. My plan is to leave this HDD only for Vista and to use the new HDD for Open Suse, changing it to the 10.3 version and without to lose my data and my settings (keeping the Home directory).

Considering that I am a ignorant could someone give me a step by step plan as much as detailed possible, in order to succeed?

Ubuntu :: Noob Uninstalling & Formating \ Want The Whole Pc Clean?

Mar 30, 2010

i have 2 hard drives with originally Win XP on one of them, and i thought it would be cool to have one with WinXP and the other one with Linux.so i choose Ubuntu. i just wished someone would have told me how Pro you really have to be for Linux.and that its totally not what i was looking for,...and apparently im a total Noob.so i Installed it, wasnt that hard, and first i thought what a cool OS ill keep it!than i tried Booting my Old OS *WinXP* from the other Harddisk (worked perfectly until than)/so Basically Ubuntu ****** up my WinXP because now i get the NTLDR Missing Error trying to start WinXP, that never happend before with that Pc.

i tought great now i have to reinstall Xp, but it came much worse,...i boot from the XP cd, and cant use the "normal" install funktion, because some errors say that i cant use the Partitions etc (no idea) up to cd reading errors,...so i wanted to try the Windows Repair console and easy Format C and D to get rid of Linux and reinstall a clean WinXP/
which OFC needs a stupid Admin Password, which i honestly NEVER have choosen.(i have no idea what the admin PW could be).than i made the big mistake of all, and tried to learn to Format anything with Linux,...20 stupid "tutorials" Later i still couldnt make it because im not that good with English and Linux,.

and all that programming speech, fdisk etc really is to complicated for me,...(i spent 1 hour finding where to enter the any command, because all tutorials ofc know that you ofc need the Terminal application,....half of the "how Tos: and Tutorials simply dont work because he doesnt know the Commands im entering probably Wrong, and and the other half is way to complicated for me to understand and requires knowledge i simply dont haveholy mother of god, i can tell you i never missed Windows so much,... right click, format done,... (again im not that good with Pcs)trying to get a windows admin pw is even more complicated than simply formating,... i guess.so now after aproxx 5 hours of trying to Format a hard drive under Linux i give up and came to you.

what i would need is simply a totally Idiotproove Manual to format Everything!
i have NO Idea how Linux works,.. so please if you could tell me step by step, just what to type or what buttons to press in this stupid Terminal,....i want the whole Pc clean again, so i never have to Suffer under Linux Pro"ness" again seriously its been a long time since i was so angry with my computer, and youre my last hopeand yes im very aware that im posting a kinda antiLinux thread in a Linux forum,

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:

Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller On OpenSuse 11.1?

Jan 10, 2009

I am having some problems getting the onboard sound card on my Intel DP45SG motherboard to work properly under openSuse 11.1. Yast appears to have detected the card as a 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller, but I cannot get any sound out of the card at all.

I have tried to follow this thread, and have run the alsa-info script, the results of which are posted here. It appears to me that the codec that is listed in the alsa script, which is the IDT 92HD73E1X5, is not the same as that which is listed on Intel's site for this board, which is the IDT 92HD73E codec. Can anyone help me out with regards to getting this going? Additional info below:

OpenSUSE Install :: Unplug Windows Hard Drive While OpenSUSE Installs?

Jun 14, 2010

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

OpenSUSE Install :: Option (Installation Regarding To Opensuse And Windows Server 2008?

Mar 20, 2011

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option

1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox

I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me

wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
