OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstalling / Upgrading While Moving To A New HDD

Dec 29, 2010

I'm a plain user of Open SUSE 10.2 for more than six months now on a dual boot machine (Vista Ultimate) and I'm 80% mostly on Linux now but because of my job I still have to keep windows.

My 1TB HDD is full and I've got a new 1TB HDD to add to my system. My plan is to leave this HDD only for Vista and to use the new HDD for Open Suse, changing it to the 10.3 version and without to lose my data and my settings (keeping the Home directory).

Considering that I am a ignorant could someone give me a step by step plan as much as detailed possible, in order to succeed?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstalling OpenSUSE And Preserving /home Partition?

Sep 29, 2010

I'd like to reinstall openSUSE 11.3 on a pc and would like to preserve the /home partition. The current partiton structure is

sda1 /boot
sda2 /swap
sda3 /extended partition
sda4 /
sda5 /home

When the installer gets to the point to set up the partitions it offers something like

sda1 /
sda2 /swap
sda3 /home

I'm not sure which option to take now. I assume I choose the option to edit the partitions but I'm not clear how to preserve the /home as it's now got a different partition number or does that no matter as long as I choose not to format it? Also, to replicate the original partition structure I'd need to delete the partitions and add them in the correct order but would that destroy the /home?I'm a bit confused with how it will work.

If not, is there a resource that will assist me in moving my data, settings, keyring (and programs if possible) from the Wubi install to a clean install on a new partition?

I'm planning for a transition from Lucid 10.04 Wubi to a dedicated partition for Lucid Studio 10.04, but have been using Wubi for emails, XAMPP web development, etc.

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving Opensuse From One Hard Disk To Another?

Aug 30, 2010

Recently I was working on something on my windows partition (on the same HD as opensuse), and all the sudden windows stopped working and I got some bad sectors on my HD.

Now, my opensuse installation is on the same HD as windows, but I need to get rid of that HD soon because it's starting to get worse (and I think opensuse is randomly crashing because of it).

Is there any way to transfer my opensuse parititon/os to another hard drive?

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving Partition To A New HDD ?

Coming from the Windows' world, it's as easy as taking an image of a partition and restoring it over a new HDD partition.

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving XFS To New EXT3 Partition

Feb 5, 2009

I have an 80 GB XFS / partition which is dying. Got some errors like this:
ata9: SError: { UnrecovData Dispar BadCRC Handshk }

It's not a problem to create another partition, I've got 2 500GB and 2 1TB disks, all EXT3. I've also 2 80 GB disks, 1 for / and 1 for /home. I will remove the 2 80 GB disks but I have a lot of stuff compiled myself. I use openSUSE 11.1. Is it possible to create a 80 GB EXT3 partition on each of the 500 GB hdd, 1 for / and 1 for /home and move the data to it? must it be done with the DD command or can I easily copy everything within a live-cd. The /boot and swap are already on one of the 500GB disks, and there is no bootrecord on the 80 GB disks.

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving /usr To Separate Partition?

Jul 24, 2011

I have a dual boot system with Vista and OpenSUSE 11.3 . Linux is distributed over 2 partitions: one for /home and one root partition for all the rest. As this root partition is getting filled, I thought of taking a 10 GB partition from the Vista partition and using this for the /usr folder (= 6 GB). This partition is a primary partition, while the rest of Linux is on secondary partitions. To be save, I renamed the existing /usr to /usr-old and created an empty /usr as mount point. I changed fstab to load the root partition, the /usr partition and then the /home partition. But when I started the system, there were a lot of errors about files not found in the /usr folder, lthought this folder and is content were clearly present when browsing the filesystem. What went wrong? Hard links? Other system configurations to change? Not possible to put /usr on a separate partition?

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving Boot Partition Resizing LVM

Jan 30, 2010

A while back I ran into the situation of running out of space on /boot. When I last installed Suse I just went with the recommended LVM layout, which proposes a very small /boot partition. When you run out of space you are now faced with resizing the LVM, which Gparted unfortunately does not support. In Googling around I did not find a concise guide, so I collected the information I needed and and then wrote a guide on the steps I used to resolve this issue and it is available at Resizing Default LVM Partitions and Moving /boot - Mine the Harvest

I found using EVMS from a live CD to be quite simple and was able to create a new /boot partition and reconfigure grub to use it in very short order. I was quite impressed with how easy to use EVMS was and the options it provides. (I think that the default LVM layout the Suse installer proposes is overly conservative on the size of the /boot partition. Why not allocate a few hundred megs, especially considering the size of drives today? Perhaps Suse will soon move to using grub2 and eliminating /boot altogether, but for now the very small allocation of space can be a bit of a pitfall for users -- especially when they are not familiar with resizing LVMs and reconfiguring grub. Of course moving to grub2 also introduces its own complexities too.)

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Distro - Moving My Home Folder ?

Jun 29, 2010

From what I have understood, trying out different Linux distros is one of those things that a Linux user just needs to do now and again.

So what is the "best" way of keeping your home folder intact? Should I just copy the whole home folder to a separate storage space, install a new distro (I'm thinking going from Ubuntu to Suse) and then just past it in the newly installed distro? Or are there some other, more "refined" methods?

I thought one's home folder contains a lot of config and settings files, but they would surely just be applicable to the original distro!?

I know I can try out several distros via live CDs, which I have done, but when you've taken that next step and actually want to install another distro as your main Linux operating system.

OpenSUSE Install :: Uncheck Show_desktop Mouse Pointer Changes To Moving Circle?

I am creating an openSUSE 11.2 Kiosk image. I have everything pretty much locked down but when I go into the gconf-editor under /apps/nautilius/preferences/show_desktop and uncheck the check box my mouse pointer changes to the circle icon that looks like it moves in a circle. Sortta like the busy or what it does during boot. Hard to describe by typing it out but if you make that change you'll see what I am talking about. I had this setup like this in previous versions of openSUSE so I am not sure what it is doing or what else I need to do to make the mouse pointer just the arrow like normally. I don't want the users to be able to right-click on the desktops to get a menu nor add icons so unchecking the show_desktop has served my needs.

I am currently using opensuse 11.0 and want to upgrade to 11.4. Is it possible to do this through Yast? Upgrading across major releases (10.0 -> 11.0) mandated a reinstall. I hope that's not the case for 11.0 -> 11.4. Can I just set the URL in Yast and upgrade? I don't want to end up in a broken state. OpenSUSE Install :: Contemplating On Upgrading To 11.2?

Dec 5, 2009

I have Opensuse 11.1 working perfectly. Is it worth risking screwing up the Grub bootloader or other issues for this upgrade? What are the benefits. Is Zypper the best way to update before doing a live Network upgrade? I think the worst problem I had going from Opensuse 11.0 to 11.1 was that I needed to boot with supergrub to edit and fix the bootloader manually. And also reinstall Samba. Which was better than the 10.3 to 11.0 where I had to scrap the entire install. It also says in the tutorial switching the repositories to oss in the example.but I currently have all pacman repositories. I can barely remember them cause I only switched them all to pacman once based on another suggestion in a post I read. I just need a good backup plan if something goes wrong. Where can I get the best tutorial for the upgrade step by step.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading Server To 11.2 With NFS

Apr 19, 2010

I own a server from 2006, I don't want to change OS on my server. How much difficult can be upgrading to the last version of openSuSE? I don't have physical access to the server, since it's a virtual server, so I think I would have to upgrade with NFS. I don't even have a GUI (well, I actually use YaST to configure everything via shell, so it's a sort of gui) and, the most important thing, I run PLESK on my server. I need to have Plesk for the administration of my customers and domains but in this upgrade I can't lose any data, from the database (MYSql) to the ones in the web folders. In other words, I need to upgrade from SuSE Linux 10.0 to OpenSUSE 11.2 without lossing any data. I am upgrading because I need the latest version of PHP, Apache and MYSql, and for security reasons too.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading 11.2->11.3 Corrupted A Different Partition?

Jul 29, 2010

I know I said I wouldn't do anything that could possibly do anything bad to the drive until I receive my external hard drive. I just didn't expect that upgrading from 11.2 to 11.3 via zypper dup has the potential to do that.

First, the problem: The most important partition of my computer containing all the irreplaceable stuff (images) which I had apparently only partially backed up was corrupted after I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3.

On my computer, there are 2 drives. sda was the one that had Windows. sdb had an NTFS partition and a few smaller partitions which I used for openSUSE. After doing quite a bit of searching on upgrades corrupting partitions, I didn't find anything about it doing what I feared which was corrupting the NTFS so I went ahead and upgraded.

The upgrade went along smoothly. No problems that I could tell. The only weird thing was that the window borders disappeared near the end but I assumed that was supposed to happen. And then I restarted. First thing I noticed was that the background was blue instead of the image I had set (which happened to be on the NTFS partition). I didn't think much of it at the time figuring it was just a quirk in the upgrade process. I went ahead and decided to reset the background to what it was. And then I realized that the NTFS partition was missing -- it wasn't mounted or visible at all. That was when I started to panic a bit.

I opened up Yast partitioner and everything looked fine except that NTFS partition in question had a little * by it. I went ahead and reset its mount point only to receive an error saying that the filesystem in question doesn't exist. And sda became sdb and sdb became sda if that changes anything.

I went into Windows expecting for it to do a CHKDISK on bootup for the drive (D: ) but none of that happened. Hoping that everything was fine, I went in and tried to access it only be given an error along the lines of "The drive in D: is not formatted. Do you want to format it?" Of course, I said no but that was when I realized that this was no partition table problem like last time.

I tried restarting but Windows froze and refused to do so for several minutes so forced the computer to shutdown and loaded my copy of GParted LiveCD. It showed a 30GB unrecognized partition, another 30MB one and some unallocated space. TestDisk fixed that. (so it turns out, there was a partition table issue) What was left was what looked OK except the one partition on sda (the original sdb) that I could not afford to lose had an error.

I can't remember the exact error but it said something like "Are you trying to use a disk as a partition? Are you trying to use /dev/sda as /dev/sda1 or vice versa?" That was either in the error message or in the message I got when I tried to check the disk.

Still trying to get Windows to check the disk, I tried booting from the new sda into Windows. What I got was the Dell Utility program. It said no mouse detected and I couldn't do anything so I shut it down.

I tried going back into Windows the normal way and got the Dell Utility. I figured that this was an MBR problem after I went back into openSUSE with the new sdb still reading perfectly. Although I couldn't manage to restore the MBR so I can't log into Windows. But the other issue is far more important.
