I have an Acer Aspire 5610 and since installing Ubuntu 9.10, the computer tends to shutdown by itself while I'm using it. Does this happen to anyone else? I would like to know what's causing this so I can either fix/solve it. I never had this problem on Ubuntu 9.04, 8.10 or 8.04. Checking the system log file viewer hasn't given me any clues to what's causing this. I just know the issue started when I installed 9.10.

This is a new (Less than one month) old netbook that is just running Slackware 13.1 with KDE.Now, every 10 or so minutes I'm getting a "Battery disconnected/Not found" error and it's insisting I plug in.Now, the battery itself is fine since by ignoring these messages, I'm getting 5-6 hours battery life easily but none the less. It's a concern. It appears to be software related rather than a bad battery.Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

Had the RC versions of 11.2 running on my laptop but now the release version is out X no longer installs properly, it gets so far through the installation but then goes to a black screen which is totally unresponsive. If I force a power-off/on it only comes up in text mode and I cannot get X to start automatically. I can get startx to work if I manually reconfigure sax2 using 0=radeon but no way can I get this to happen at startup. Seems a very retrograde situation and something that completely got past quality control.
Probably the end of my time with OpenSuse having been a user for over 5 years, at least Ubuntu installs straight in with no problems whatsoever - exactly what I would have expected from OpenSuse.

I have Windows 7 and openSuse on my Acer Aspira 5532. I find that after using it, I'd rather get rid of Windows 7 all together. However, I want to be careful not to remove the partition that has the Windows 7 Reinstallation boot disk just incase in the future I wish to go back to Windows. Is there a way I can make my entire computer Linux (no dual boot) but also not deleting the Windows 7 reinstallation partition?
Further, can someone example why, on Boot, I have like 5 options to choose from? Like two openSUSE versions, failsafe, Windows 1, and Windows 2....? To be honest, when I installed openSUSE, I just did the recommended partition job that it suggested. I don't know much about partitions.

I just installed oS11.3 on a new Aspire Revo R3610 which has the Intel Atom 330 chip and Nvidia ION graphics.
I noticed that the CPU is always running at 1600Mhz and doesn't throttle down when there is no load. Do the Atom cpus not throttle down or is there a setting in 11.3 that I can change?
I installed the 64bit of oS 11.3.

I haven't done Linux since before it had Wireless support, and have never had to tinker with network settings, so I am at a loss.My searching may be weak, but when I tried, I found nothing relevant except to determine some of the things usually asked for in threads of this nature. The symptom is very slow connection when using wireless, but it does fine when I hardwire it. Using Windows 7 on the same system it flows nicely.

I have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.
I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

Attempting to compile an application that is not located in any of the repos yet for 11.3 64 bit. I have downloaded the appropriate src and untarred it. However, when I attempt to run the ./configure command here is the error I receive. checking build system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-': machine `x86_64-unknown-linux' not recognized configure: error: /bin/sh ./config.sub x86_64-unknown-linux- failed
I have made sure that I have all kernel-headers packages installed and am unsure as how to proceed. I tried using the command "./configure --build=x86_64" and then receive an error stating that the "SYSTEM IS NOT SUPPORTED" and continued errors stating that gcc is not installed, eve though it is.

I am trying to install Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire AMD 64 2 with 1 GB of memory.
I downloaded the Fedora 12 live CD Fedora-12-X86_64-ISO.
When I try to boot from that CD, I get a message "irq 17 too bust" and the system hangs before finishing the boot process. So I have very little to go on.
Ps. I previously installed Kubuntu 9.1 without any problems.

in compliance with bonekracker's advice, i have reposted my SOS. i have the result of the outputs of the commands for ifconfig, iwconfig, and etc i have uploaded it in the file output.doc. i hope this would be helpful in debugging my problem.but before that, i do notice that if i click on the icon for the Network Manager, the Wireless networks is set to 'wireless disabled'. maybe if i can make it turn on, my wireless problem will be solved.. its just that i even if i move the switch for the wifi, it still wouldn't turn on.

The problem now is that I cant get online. I have an Acer Aspire 5720. My network card is called Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b / g WLAN. What do I do? I've googled around and found various forum posts where I'm told that I must write various things in Terminal, which have not yet worked. I have also visited this site, where this is the first step: Open System → Administration → Networking. But the problem is that I can not find the "Networking" under "Administration". I have no experience with Linux what so ever, Ninja-edit: I tried reading through this, but I fell off at Make the .ko file

I tried to install the beta version of maverick with no luck. I used usb creator to put maverick on a memory stick. When I went into live mode everything worked perfectly so I thought why not install it. I then tried to do this but after filling out all the required info it wouldn't install. I clicked the install button and the installer froze up. I currently have ubuntu netbook remix (9.04) installed on it in desktop mode. I also, awhile ago, try installing lucid (both desktop and netbook remixes) and had a similar problem with them. They both stalled installing at the 15% mark. Now with this problem with maverick I am wondering why this could be happening. I have used different memory sticks so I have ruled that out as a problem. They all have worked flawlessly and speedily in live mode.

My Acer AspireOne netbook has a native resolution of 1024x600. Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.
The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:
Code:
swope@netbook:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)[code]....
I haven't been able to find xorg.conf ... but I've read that recent versions of Ubuntu create the content dynamically. Not sure what other details I should be including, at the risk of making this post too long.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot on my Acer Aspire 0ne 533. I have to keep the Windows partition for work, or I'd have just installed Ubuntu. I'm used to plugging in an ethernet cable for the first round of updates until I get the WiFi working, but it just isn't working for me this time. I have a horrid feeling that Windows has a way of hogging the Ethernet card.
I had a look in the forums, and could not find anything referring to this specifically, which is unusual because as far as I can tell the AA1 is a popular machine and lots of people dual boot it. Perhaps it is an easy fix that's been buried in the archives?

I've got an Acer Aspire AM3920 (Intel Core i5) Desktop PC. I want to upgrade my Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat to Natty Narwhal, but it just isn't working. I've tried to upgrade two times, both resulting in a crash while installing. When I try to install it from a Live CD, I'm getting a black screen and when I press a key in the purple screen of the Live CD and select nomodeset, it doesn't work either. So my question is: Is it possible to install/run Ubuntu 11.04 on this PC?

A friend here in Mexico recently bought an AOA150 Acer Aspire netbook with Linpus Lite. It seems to be an excellent machine, except it has the dreaded microphone problem, which seems to be fixable, a lot of solutions on Google. So, I don't want to get into that now. I happen to have a Mitzu "stereo condensor microphone" can't remember where I got it, still in the package. It warns the computer must have a sound card input for it. So, how do I find out if it does? Can a microphone hurt the computer?
