OpenSUSE :: Desktop Effects Stopped Working After Recent Upgrades - 11.1, Gnome

May 25, 2010

OpenSuSE 11.1 updated on Saturday to all of the latest patches and stuff. I was a bit behind, so quite a few things got updated. Most of them probably don't matter for this problem.

Prior to Saturday, desktop effects were working fine. After, they don't. Gnome still works ok, but attempting to go in to the "Desktop Effects" configuration just hangs for a minute (spinning "wheel" cursor) then nothing happens ("arrow" cursor returns).

Looking at things via "ps ax" I can see that clicking on "Desktop Effects" starts process(/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/simple-ccsm).

Running this from a CLI produces:

After which nothing happens and I have to hunt down the PID and kill it.

Searching for this "tuple index out of range" error, I found a couple of 2008 references, but those are for much older version so I'm thinking that they're probably not relevant. Nothing else seems to apply.

Ubuntu :: Keeping Track Of Working Hours?

Sep 21, 2010

I would like to have a way to keep track of my working hours easily.

Insert arrival and finish times and have the difference in decimal. For example, if I start at 8:00 and finish at 9:30, 1.5 should be added.

I tried to do this with Calc but couldn't figure it out. I set one column to have entrance time, another one to have exit time and a third one with the difference("=B2-C2"). The result is in a timestamp format and not decimal. If I use another cell to say something like HOURS(D2) it rounds the number rather than give a decimal(would give 9 for 9:20:00).

EDIT: solved by doing =24*(B2-C2)

Fedora :: Software For Entering And Keeping Track Of Service Calls?

Feb 10, 2011

I am starting a small business for computer repair and was wondering if there is any software available for entering and keeping track of service calls. Right now I am using Kmymoney for keeping track of finances and it seems to be working out ok. I also use day planner to keep track of appointments. However, I haven't found anything to keep track of service calls. Currently, I am pretty much trying to adapt spreadsheets as a "get by" solution but its not that pretty.

I would like to keep track of not only what bash commands I used and when, but also where they were issued from, i.e. what was the current working directory when I issued "foobar" on a particular day and time. Can we ask bash history to keep track of working directories too? I have tried to get an idea of this reading the enormous "man bash", but I don't seem to have an answer yet either way.

Ubuntu Networking :: Keeping Track Of Mobile Broadband Data Usage Across Computers?

Jun 6, 2010

the data usage information from the carrier is often several hours old and is accessed in some arcane ways (logging into their website, sending a specific SMS message at best). Here's my idea: single-session data usage is perfectly reported by ifconfig ppp0. The problem is, how tokeep track of previous sessions accumulate the numbers rollover to zero at specified date To be able to do this across computers means that one needs to store it on the modem/SIM card itself. (As a specially crafted SMS message, or a contact).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mouse Buttons Stop Working, Relogging Fixes?

Dec 18, 2010

Upon logging into kde 4.4 the left mouse button (3 button usb mouse) becomes unresponsive on certain windows. For instance the toolbar may still respond to left-click while other windows on the desktop do not register it. However more and more windows/panels become unresponsive rather quickly. The same happens for right-click sometimes but far less often. Some functionality can be recovered by re-plugging the mouse.

Logging out and logging back in solves the problem until the next reboot. I have tried different users and wiping the .kde and .kde4 folders. The problem persists. I can stil work by relogging every time I turn on my computer but it does waste a lot of time so if there are any ideas I'd apreciate it. KDE 4.4 release 3 (There seems to be no updates in YAST available)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Keeping HDD Alive With 11.3?

Sep 8, 2010

I have been having problems keeping my hard drives alive with openSUSE 11.3, it is happening way to often and I'm starting to think its more than bad luck. The hard drives that I have been using are brand new 500 GB Western Digital hard drives. Once I get it I would do SMART test on it, which all turn out clean, then a couple of months later I go to boot my system and I am fronted with a { DRDY ERR } { UNC}. Checking the SMART selftest log from the repair mode on the DVD I get a read failure at about 10% of the drive, the LBA of first error is: 578307645. I can't keep replacing the HDD ever couple of months its just getting way to expensive.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Track Down The Cause Of Crashes

Feb 17, 2010

I have something crashing my system. It might be the random screensaver setting as it was an issue in 11.0 although I have not see it be an issue in 11.2. Previously I though my computer was shutting itself down and because of that I started this thread: opensuse 11.2 shutting down - openSUSE Forums

but now I know the issue is crashing it seems like I should start a separate thread as it's a completely different question. I guess I need to learn how to determine what caused a crash after I reboot a crashed system. So, other than blindly combing logs of which there are dozens, is there a smart methodical way to determine what is crashing a system after a restart? -- when you are not around to see what the cause is as it happens.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Amarok2 - Add Track To Collection

Feb 28, 2010

It seems that some of the functions I used almost daily in Amarok 1 are not to be found (at least by me) in Amarok 2. After a thread without a solution on how to play Random tracks, here is a new one.

In Amarok 1 I used to place a track (e.g. sitting in a download directory) in the playlist (by clicking on it). A right click on it in the play list revealed a few options. Two of them:

. copy track to collection.
. move track to collection

Both are gone in Amarok 2 and I could not find a replacement.

Btw when I right click on an item in the collection list (at left) there is still the Reorganize file(s) that is very much the 'collection internal' equivalent.

As I suppose that it is possible to add to the local collection, who knows how to do it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Keeping Familiar Hostname In SUZE 11.2?

But for the second time I get a linuxXXXXX sort of host name! No chance to set my preferred one up. I like what I've seen of SUZE so far and am happy to move to it sort of permanently. This legacy hostname helps me keep sane in networking matters though and I have yet to configure a networked laserprinter and add another computer. Can I re-set the hostname to my selection without harming the whole set-up?

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading To 11.3 Keeping /home Partition?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm upgrading to 11.3 (from 11.2) and will be keeping my current home partition. Will this keep my browser favorites? Also, I read somewhere that in order for things to work properly after upgrading (without reformatting my /home partition) that I would have to keep the same username AND user UID...? Is that true? How do I make sure I have the same UID if so...?

I purposely set up a seperate home partition so that when I changed distro's or upgraded I would still have my files, and some settings intact. (I switched distros a lot when I first started using Linux.) I set up a "bin" folder (in home folder) that had a couple of programs I had downloaded to keep from having to set up and configure everything all over again every time I felt like changing distro's as well.

OpenSUSE :: Keeping The Mangler (Native Ventrilo Client) Working?

Apr 13, 2011

I play MMOs and need to be able to communicate in ventrilo with the guild and groups that I am in. I have never had any problems making windows games work in WINE as long as the appDB says they are good to go, but I have had an ongoing problem with Mangler in a few distros.

I have had an on going problem with my system and Mangler. I use a creative usb fatality headset. When I am in Windows it works fine for ventrilo. If I boot into Linux and load up Mangler I can get it to work, but then after a while no one can hear me, but I can hear them and the Mangler icon in the system tray turns yellow instead of green.

I have the audio settings in Mangler set for my USB head set. My head set will consistintly work in Audacity. When I go into the pulse audio settings and set the drop box down to my head set it will show default audio every time I go back into the audio settings. If I reboot then plug in the headset and then reste the drop down to head set it will work. If I open a game or something it will close sometimes other times I think it just takes time. I have had the same propblem on Ubuntu 10.04, Kubuntu 10.10, and openSUSE 11.4.

OpenSUSE Install :: Using An SSD But Keeping Home Directory On Hard Drive?

Jun 14, 2011

I have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.

I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.

I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.

However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Keeping Nvidia Settings - Can't Get My Wallpapers To Fill The Desktop

It seems like about every third or fourth time I boot up I have to rebuild and install the Nvidia drivers (the hard way). Also I can't get my wallpapers to fill the desktop, they are tiled sometimes and I can't change them. One other thing is I am having trouble with the screensavers, they won't start, and I like to delete some of them?

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Booting 11.2 And W7 While Keeping W7's Boot Manager Intact

Jun 2, 2010

my Windows partition and the future Suse partition will be on different HDDs, so this should ease things a bit. Suse is on HDD 2 and Windows on HDD 1 HDD 2 will be the default Master drive, so I want GRUB to give me to option to boot either on Suse, either on Windows 7 I want to keep Windows 7 boot manager intact. I.E. If I switch HDD 1 to the Master drive, it will boot directly into Win 7.

What I wanted to do is:

Unplugg Windows drive
Install Suse
Replugg Windows drive and manually add the entry to GRUB

if I keep them both plugged, Linux will not touch HDD 1 MBR?

OpenSUSE Install :: Safest Way To Upgrade Using New Installation While Keeping Existing Home?

May 23, 2011

Having read several threads and received excellent previous advice there are just a couple of points I want to check please before proceeding on laptop. I want to upgrade to 11.4 from 11.2. My disk setup is as follows:-

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15505 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x462d462c

[Code]..

If I select existing /home root and swap partitions, format root but prevent formatting of /home and use a different user ID I believe that will leave my existing data intact and will allow me to trial new os. Is this correct approach? If all goes well and when I have new system working correctly, what is best way make old user id date accessible. Can I simply create my old id on new system and will that allow me to access data when I log on with that id?

Second question; at present I have the ability to boot to openSUSE, OS/2 and windoze. (It used to be done entirely by Boot Manager but during my last Linux installation I messed this up a bit so now machine boots to grub and this offers all three operating systems but chain loads Boot Manager if I select OS/2)

When I do the new installation what should I select to retain this setup so that I still have access to windoze and OS/2 but when selecting linux have new 11.4 system run.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Kdenlive Crashes When Loading Project With Saved Audio Track

Sep 20, 2010

I'm currently on vacation, and noted that the kdenlive version on my laptop (running 64-bit openSUSE-11.3 with KDE-4.4.4) will crash when loading a kdenlive file that has an audio track previously saved.

ie one can no longer reload a project, after saving it, if one has an audio track in the project.

I note my desktop (just before I went on vacation) did not have this behaviour. Has anyone else encountered this?

When I get back from vacation, I'll compare the packages between the two (ie between laptop and desktop). I note these packages on my laptop, which may or may not be relevant.

Code:

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound Driver - Vocal / Commentary Track Sounds Like Listening To It From Underwater

Apr 21, 2010

I've been having these weird problem with sound after the last few updates. The background music of a ..... video or audio CD playback would be fine, but any vocal/commentary track that contains human voice would be all jumbed up and sounds like you are listening to it from underwater. The volume for the human voice part of the audio would also be a lot lower than the music track.

Not sure what the problem is, and the only way of solving it was through system restore (which actually takes more time than a reinstall). The test sound in YAST sounds fine (well, it's a music track afterall), and most instrumental music on ..... seems to play correctly.
