I would like to remove openSUSE (11.3) from my dual boot (/Windows) system. In the old days, the install CD used to have an option for that, but now my DVD doesn't have anything, or perhaps I overlooked?
View 7 RepliesI have a laptop with a small (dual boot) hard drive. It is a dual boot with Windows XP and Open Suse 11.1. I want to remove Suse Linux but keep the Windows side. I need to keep that Windows drive just the way it is. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 installed in another laptop and want to keep them separate. I don't want to damage the proprietary program on the windows side. My challenge is I do not have aa Windows install CD, I do have the recovery disk that came with the Laptop, but this DOES NOT include the Proprietary program I want to keep. Is there a way to remove Linux from this dual boot drive without erasing Windows?

I wish to remove grub2 from mint and install grub legacy, not sure whether it will work or not. I will be reinstalling grub from suse dvd. It gives me a free hand for adding boot entries. I wish to know whether I can remove grub2 and install grub legacy. In grub2 all boot related folders are stored in more than 1 place like /boot and /etc and subfolders.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install OpenSUSE 11.4 (64bit with the server options included) on my Mac (Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB memory). So I have sda2 the OSX, sda1 swap, sda3 is the bootcamp (windows), sda4 (ext4) and sda5(ext5). I installed rEFIt 0.14 first, then I reboot with DVD on. The installation setup resized the Windows partition from Bootcamp, and create 3 other partitions (the sda1,4 and 5). At the installation I choos MBR enable and "/" as home enable.
At the end of the installation I have the error about MBR, that can't mount, or create the mount point? I'll double check the exact message. Anyway, when I try to load OpenSUSE, is not working: can not load the system. I tried to find on the installation menu a repair (I thought that I can find an utility to fix the MBR). I don't want to choose other distribution, because I used SuSE before, and I really like it, and of course this way I can learn more about troubleshooting a Linux installation on different environment
I am trying to streamline a desktop install into a more streamlined server-esk install. I have edited the inittab to change the runlevel at startup to 3. How do I now remove KDE completely? Also are there any other large programs I need to uninstall?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.
(1) Where is grub located on my system?
(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:
dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1

I just installed SUSE 11.2 as dual-boot with WinXP on an older system that has a 160GB PATA drive and a 500GB SATA RAID drive. I left about 80GB on the PATA drive unpartitioned to accommodate SUSE. During the initial installation attempt, SUSE was determined to install on the RAID drive instead of the PATA drive, so I disabled the SATA drivers in the BIOS to force the installation on the PATA drive. This was successful, but now there is no access to the RAID drive from SUSE because there is no driver and it is not mounted. I reactivated the SATA drivers in the BIOS and the RAID drive reappeared in WinXP with everything intact. The SATA drives now appear in SUSE under Hardware Information as "/dev/sdb" and "/dev/sdc" and the listed driver is "sata_sil".
So how do I get the RAID drivers installed in SUSE and then mount the drive so it can be browsed/modified from Dolphin? I would also like to be able to browse/change this drive from other computers on my home network through samba, just like with WinXP.

Gnome is falling apart and I've had a lot of nagging problems that I couldn't overcome.I'm thinking of wiping the OpenSuse partitions and doing a clean install without wiping the windows partition.I initially setup using the 11.0/XP dual boot FAQ in the How To forum.I have my Home directory backed up on an external HD. Might try KDE next go-round or KDE & Gnome as separate users. I have 11.2 i586 installation DVD.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The boot loader used is Ubuntus Grub that came with the Ubuntu installation.
I have done a zypper dup and upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4. When I reboot my system I can no longer boot into OpenSUSE, Grub says something about a missing kernel.
I think I understand whats wrong here; the OpenSUSE entry in Grubs table hasn't been updated with the changes brought in by the zypper dup (new kernel i guess).
I'm I correct to assume this? How do I fix the problem? Booting into Ubuntu I tried to find /boot/grub/menu.lst to examine it by I cannot find it. I know Ubuntu use a newer version of Grub, does it have a different file layout?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home
I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.
After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.
My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?
Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
ere's my issue I've got an 80GB SATA drive and a 320GB IDE drive, I've already installed Windows 7 on the SATA drive. 80 is too small (in my opinion) to dual boot openSuse and Windows 7. Can someone explain me how to use a partition from the 320 IDE to install openSuse, and how to setup grub so I wouldn't have any problems booting to Windows?

Booting into this LMDE will return error of code 15, it is the same value as it was working before, before I changed to new hdd for my LMDE. What I am trying to do is I want legacy GRUB to manages all the booting.
I have installed openSuse 11.4 and works perfectly. The main problem is, I have another system on my HD, Windows XP, and unable to boot to my XP system. If I choose Windows on Grub menu, its just show me the same text as in the menu.lst at Windows' section. I am able to boot in Windows, by adding 'makeactive' but then, I unable to see the grub menu. And to boot to oS again, I must insert DVD installer and made an update. How tiring.

When I tried to uninstall some applications, pidgin, for example, via 'Add/Remove Software', YaST told me that I have to uninstall another 200+ packages. Is this something normal? I'm new to Linux and don't want ruin the system, so I seek for another way.
I found that 'Software Manager' can also be used to uninstall the package, so I use it to uninstall pidgin. The problem is after I pressed 'Apply' button, there are so many package installing by themselves. I saw that most of them are appended with '-lang'.
I had windows 7 starter, then repartitioned the HDD and installed Ubuntu netbook remix the partitions are in this order Ubuntu -> System -> Data partition -> Windows 7.I'm having some nagging problems with remix and want to try something else.Can I just destroy the Ubuntu partition or will it stop windows from booting up? I know Windows was there first, but the computer has been booting from the /boot/grub/grub.cfg menu, so when this is gone will it automatically check the windows partition for a boot.ini or whatever?

I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?
To avoid to complicated answers, just give me a solution that works without criptic linux commands, i get lost in that.

I currently have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my PC. The details of how it got installed I cannot explain... I installed it on a HD that was not partitioned and I accepted all the defaults that Ubuntu suggested. So as far as I know right now Ubuntu "owns" the whole HD.
I now would like to create a dual-boot system by installing openSUSE 11.3 alongside Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. By reading things here and there, my guess is that I need to create a partition for openSUSE by shrinking the one for Ubuntu. But I am really not sure.
So I downloaded the CD version (GNOME) only of openSUSE, launched the installer and the process came to the following suggestions which is basically all Greek to me:
* Delete partition /dev/sda1
* Create root volume /dev/sda1 with ext4
* Create volume /dev/sda3 for /home with ext4
* Use /dev/sda5 as swap
As I said before, what I would like to do is install openSUSE side-by- side with Ubuntu and create a dual-boot system. I do not want to delete Ubuntu! I got scared by that "Delete partition /dev/sda1" thing mentioned above and so I aborted the installation.
What is the installer suggesting? Has it realized that I already have Ubuntu installed and that I want to create a dual-boot system?
I recently built a new rig and wanted to make it dual boot with W7 & OS 11.2. I installed W7 and partitioned my drive with 30 gigs I anticipated using for the 11.2 install. OpenSuse will not recognize it or allow any changes to that hard drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.
So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4
After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:
1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.
2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link

Bedsides it changes with each new distro.I'm tempted to use the VM program that Dedoimodo recommended but I don't knowhow it handles Email and urls. If they are permanent or not.
