OpenSUSE :: Screen Not Properly Refreshed By System
Aug 30, 2010
I actually don't know what was the cause of this. Because of some display problems such as openSUSE freezes with external monitors, I have included xorg repository and updated relevant packages. A couple of days ago, suddenly my system started not refreshing the screen properly. For example, when I change a folder in Nautilus, the file pane is blank even though there are lots of files. The files appear when I move mouse cursor around or I activate some other window with alt-tab, and get back. Or in OpenOffice Witer, if I press arrow keys, there are lots of residual image of the cursor. So the screen is not properly refreshed right now.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old PC, Dell dimension L550r, PIII500, 512M ram. There is a problem that monitor is not detected. I could logon as 'xterm' type, but the window size is only 1/4 of screen. When I logon as 'GNOME', it seems screen is not refreshed. media player window is blank, but can see a static image if minimize and restore window. Even terminal window is blank.
Go to "System"->"Preference"->"Display", shows "monitor unknown".
I can not find file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, is this normal?
xrandr command output:
Screen 0: minimum 640x400, current 1024x768, maximum 1024x768
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x0mm
1024x768 60.0* 75.0 70

I have tried loading 11.4 from the DVD from Linux Magazine. Everything goes swimmingly until I get to using it when the screen shows black rectangles, is "twitchy" and nothing works properly. I currently run 11.3 which works fine.

I have a fresh new F13 installation and I am not linux expert, I need to test Fedora for some reasons. When I try to start HTTPD or vncserver services, status display as "This service is being refreshed right now", it keeps like this for a long moment. Closing and reopening services applet, I notice that both services are stopped. I googled about apache, the 1st thing I understood is to search error_log, opened it in gedit, nothing is written in this file.

I don't know if the title is a correct description of the problem I have. I registered a domain name in godaddy, created a subdomain name and pointed it to some name servers. After some time, I moved my website so I change the name servers of this subdomain name. But the problem now is it is still pointing to the old name servers. Everytime I visit the website in my computer, I get errors. But I try it in another computer, I works. So I suspect there is something left in my computer that still tells my browser to go for the old name server. I've cleared cache and temporary files of this browser but it still does not change.

Just installed OpenSuse 11.4 successfully on my machine (E-machines T6212). Previously attempted to install Ubuntu 11.4 on it as well. Both OS have resulted in my computer screen turning white with blue lines and the entire system freezing; unresponsive to keystrokes and even keyboard CAPS/NUM lights don't respond. Only way I can get system to come back is to physcially unplug it, not even power it off with Power button.
I believe there is something with my graphics card that may be the culprit; ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M - ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M Specifications
Because for both OpenSuse and Ubuntu this problem came up.
However with OpenSuse I am able to get to the Terminal Screen via : 1- On startup typing '3' into the screen and getting into 'grub' I think it is called.
I am not able to GUI.
I have read: Configuring Graphics Forum Page l in the forums here as well as looked into the Radeon page for the drivers.
I have also found the following thread here dealing with my particular graphics card but :
1-In my 'xorg.conf.new' file in my /root the correct driver "radeon" seems to be listed.
2-I added "radeon" to my 50-device.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg-conf.d/.. directory

The system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?

Does anyone know where there might be a log of the shutdown errors I see flash on the screen when I shutdown the system? I thought they'd be in the warning log. Or is there a way to freeze that screen so I can actually read what is happening?

I downloaded OpenSUSE today hoping I could install it on my aging computer, a Pentium 3 1.3GHz, 512MB RAM and a 3dfx Voodoo 5500. When booting into the live CD, I cannot get it to go to the installation. After the GRUB screen (Or whatever is used) to choose install, I just get a black screen. Is 3dfx not supported by OpenSUSE?

A week or two ago the machine did not want to shut down unless I switch the power off, although starting did not have any problems. On Wednesday I downloaded a few extras including a pdf reader and updated the PC as well. I switched off on Wednesday evening and on Thursday morning the PC would start, the UBUNTU screen would appear and then just a blank screen. I tried several times to restart, but no success.
After several times of trying to restart I decided my only solution would be to re-install which I did. To my surprise this took quite some time and not as the original installation which only took a few minutes. The additional problem is that I kept windows with most of my documents still in windows. This did not pose a problem after the 1st installation as I could easily access the files.
However now I just cannot find any of those files and not even the original files saved in UBUNTU. I fortunately have a back-up on an external drive, but do not want to access that before I am sure that they will remain safe. I unfortunately do not understand the jargon being used even when someone says that I have to change something in the backend or in the program itself. I do not even know to open such a screen.

Yesterday, I tried to get two monitors working by editing xorg.conf. When it failed, I tried using my old xorg.conf, but that didn't work either. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did not work (it literally did nothing). Uninstalling and re-installing xserver-xorg did not work.So now I have zero working monitors instead of two. Xorg.0.log says something about "Screen was found, but doesn't work with existing setup." Anyway, I am less concern with the specific problem I am having than with the general way to fix problems with X. I read somewhere that dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't work anymore, but I haven't figured out what I'm supposed to use in place of it when X won't start.

So I've got a backup server that has a daily cronjob to back up all my systems. My desktop PC is usually in sleep mode to save power. So my backup server has to wake up the desktop via wake-on-LAN to start the backup job. When the backup script is done, my backup server sends a shutdown command to the desktop to put it back in sleep mode.
The trouble is that SSH is timing out during the shutdown process and waits a ridiculous amount of time before giving up and allowing my backup server to move on to the next backup script. Here's the portion of my backup script for the desktop that does the shutdown stuff:
Code:
ssh user@host.lan '/usr/bin/shutdown -p +1'
Here's what cron sends me via e-mail:
Code:
Read from remote host host.lan: Connection timed out
real 164m46.280s
user 5m16.160s
sys 1m39.760s
Normally the entire backup job will only take about 5 minutes. But because of SSH timing out, it takes 164 minutes!
As a matter of detail, my backup server is running Ubuntu 9.10, and the desktop is Windows 7 x64 with Cygwin. The -p option for the shutdown command in Cygwin is for sleep mode.

I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:
openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.
The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

When i use the shutdown-command in the terminal as root, it nearly works. It starts to shut down, and it looks like all programs and the kernels shuts down. I end up with a black screen, sometimes with the ubuntu-logo on, but it never powers off. I have to force it off by holding the power button. When i use the graphical interface to shut it down, it works perfectly. The poweroff-command works without problem too.
Here is the command i use:

I am on debian jessie. I ran "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and midway through the upgrade my computer suddenly rebooted.
I wasn't paying close attention to the upgrade process so I didnt see if there was any error messages right before the reboot. The laptop was plugged in, fully charged and I've never had issues with overheating.
When I boot now I get to a shell with a message that says:
Code: Select allWelcome to emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
If I try "systemctl default" there's a message that simply says "Hangup", nothing else happens.
Looking through "journalctl -xb" I see this:
Code: Select allFailed to insert module 'autofs4'
Failed to open /dev/autofs: No such file or directory
Failed to initialize automounter: No such file or directory
Failed to set up automount Arbitrary Executable File Formats File System Automount Point.
Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
If I retry "apt-get upgrade" it says:
Code: Select alldpkg was interrupted, you must maually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem
If I run "dpkg --configure -a" stops at the package cups-browsed with message saying "Hangup"
Output of a few commands I saw in another forum thread:
$ lsmod
Code: Select allModule Size Used by
ext4 473802 1
crc16 12343 1 ext4
mbcache 17171 1 ext4
jbd2 82522 1 ext4
[Code] ....
Is this fixable without jumping through too many hoops or should I just reinstall the system? I need the computer for work so Im not gonna spend days trying to fix it without reinstalling.

9.10 Problem with Graphics/3D and other I have a Thinkpad T42, 1.7GHz, 1Gb Ram and a Radeon 7500 Graphics card. Everything that I am having trouble with works just fine in Ubuntu 9.04(except for the sound). There are two problems that I think are linked or really the same. First off, When I turn off Compiz(Compiz works by default) then gnome-system-monitor does not work properly. At least the graphics side of it; the window appears black with random lines running threw it. The same thing will happen to Gnome-do if Compiz is off.
The second problem is getting 3d support to work. I installed and tried to run blender and I got this from the terminal:
[Code]...
Then it ether does not open or the computer locks up completely and I have to force a shutdown. Which ever one it does I do not get my desired results. When trying to do chess in 3D it tells that I have 'No Python OpenGL support'. So I install the python-opengl package from the repositories; the program now just errors on start and I had to uninstall python-opengl to get Chess to work again. I have tried all this with Compiz on and off with the same results. Anyways thats about it, unless somebody knows how to setup the sound so a program won't lock it from other, then thats all I am having trouble with.

I am using Fedora 12. I have the following problem, when i working with system-config-samba dialog:I add the new user on the server:as following:
Unix username: vova
Windows username:test
As described in Customisation Guide for Red Hat 9: "If the user has a different username on a Windows machine and will be logging into the Samba serverfrom the Windows machine, specify that Windows username in the Windows Username field."So i logged from the Windows machine not under test(Windows username) but under vova. And i logged in without the problem. However it seems that samba should check windows username=test (as have written in samba-config) and ask an password for different users. And additionally, if samba check the currect user in Windows itself and verify it with Unix user, what for we need write the Windows username in samba config? I don't understand
