Networking :: Wireless Tools Doesn't Refresh APs Properly

Feb 17, 2010

I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.

I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.

Fedora :: NVidia And Compiz Installed And Working But Screen Doesn't Refresh Correctly?

Oct 30, 2010

What it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.

Another example:

*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3.
*) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen.
*) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3.
*) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.

Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.

As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.

Code:
[=v=]$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 Northbridge only single slot PCI-e GFX Hydra part (rev 02)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port B)

[Code]....

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...

Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?

The screen flickers, looks crappy, takes ages to refresh, etc. Anyone experience similar things? I also noticed that when I start yumex I also get the screen doing the same things as with Skype, but to a much lesser extent and only for a few seconds. OpenSUSE Install :: Refresh Rate An Screen Resolution Not Correctly Adjusted

Jan 31, 2010

Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).

Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?

YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4

1. Do you know, which other library might contain this "ped_free"-declaration?
2. Any other perted GUI, that might work better (gparted is only available on a live DVD after boot)

OpenSUSE :: Screen Not Properly Refreshed By System

Aug 30, 2010

I actually don't know what was the cause of this. Because of some display problems such as openSUSE freezes with external monitors, I have included xorg repository and updated relevant packages. A couple of days ago, suddenly my system started not refreshing the screen properly. For example, when I change a folder in Nautilus, the file pane is blank even though there are lots of files. The files appear when I move mouse cursor around or I activate some other window with alt-tab, and get back. Or in OpenOffice Witer, if I press arrow keys, there are lots of residual image of the cursor. So the screen is not properly refreshed right now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: OpenOffice Makes Video Refresh And Gnome Crash?

Jun 30, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

Here's my environment;

Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM

I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;

Code:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gnome Display Recognize Same Refresh Rate As NVidia Server?

Jan 4, 2010

Is it possible to have gnome's display settings recognise higher refresh rates than 56hz, as my nvidia is set to 85hz, but gnome display still thinks its 56hz, and I believe this is causing many programs I'm using to refresh at 56hz. Compiz works beautifully after overriding the refresh rate inside it, as it too thought I was using 56hz instead of 85 but many games aswell as CairoDock as jerky, which makes me think it is a refresh issue.

How can I make gnome know I'm using 85hz?

I did some searching on the Internet and found that it may be able to fix by updating driver, but i have no idea what and how to do it. can someone suggest a solution? can i use yum?

Ubuntu :: Changing Refresh Rate - Screen Too Flickery

Apr 18, 2010

I have installed Xubuntu 9.10 on an old computer.

The screen resolution defaulted to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60hz.

As this made the screen too flickery I changed the refresh rate to 87hz.

This improved the ficker but had some side effects. Firstly the computer now 'thinks' that my monitor is bigger than it really is. For example a maximised application is now off the screen. I have to manually resize the applications to fit the screen. The virtual desktop in the bottom right hand corner is now off the screen, as is the clock on the top right hand corner.

The other side effect is that I now have problems logging on to my computer. It now takes several attempts to log onto my computer.

OpenSUSE Install :: Gnome Doesn't Seem To Be As Configurable As KDE

Oct 6, 2010

KDE 4 has prompted me to try Gnome -- and I like what I see. It's beautiful, clean, and use-oriented. I especially like Nautilus and the system monitor and the terminal program and simple but helpful features like the F10 menu key. It's inspired software! But nothing's perfect. For one thing, Gnome doesn't seem to be as configurable as KDE. I tried to change the maximize keystroke to Ctrl-Alt-M, to no avail. I'd also like to change F10, since that conflicts with the mc (Midnight Commander) exit key, but I don't know how to do it.

The black screen at startup has recurred. This time, I wads not able to get out by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and restarting gdm from the root: Ctrl-Alt-F1 had no effect.I had to reboot. The problem occurred after gnome flashed and then blanked a login screen.I thought the lack of a login might be the cause, so I added another user and used YaST to ask that the login panel be shown.Well, gnome still isn't giving me a chance to login, but at least the black screen problem has disappeared for now, at least.

Fedora :: Screen Refresh Rate 85hz Max With NVidia Card

Nov 9, 2010

I am having trouble setting my refresh rate higher than 85 hz. Any Way to get it to 100 hz?

Tried so far:
- a lot of googling
- added a modeline to xorg.conf
- reinstalled nvidia driver
- tried the screen on a windows desktop, this worked so the monitor is fine

Specs:
onitor: Iiyama Vision master pro 510 (should be capable of doing 104 hz at 1600 x 1200, max resolution 2048 x 1536)
graphics card: Geforce 9800gt
motherboard: p5ql-e
Os: Fedora 13

The modeline I tried, tried it both in screen section as well as in a seperate "Modes" section:
Code:
Modeline "1600x1200_100.00" 280.64 1600 1728 1904 2208 1200 1201 1204 1271 -HSync +Vsync
After restarting X the screen only does 1024x768 max because of the modeline

xorg.conf:
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Slackware :: Hardware - Performance Drop - Slow Screen Refresh

May 2, 2010

My system is (and was) Slackware 13 64bit I had DFI LanParty NF4 with AMD Athlon64, 2GB (dual channel) of RAM and Gigabyte GeForce 250 1GB. Now I have Asus P6X58D Premium with Intel i7 960, 6GB (triple) of RAM and the same graphics card + 3 internal SATA hard disks (no partitions change). I replaced hardware and noticed a performance drop.

In text console it looks like slow screen refresh. Also visible during boot when next line of text appears with a delay. I can even see as midnight commander blue window unfolds from the top of the screen when I start it. Switching from text to X takes more time. File copying takes more time. I have Xp guest in VmWare Workstation. Windows runs noticeably faster. I have reinstalled Slackware and changed (in BIOS) default IDE mode for SATA to AHCI. Still slower then with previous hardware. Maybe I am too oversensitive now, but I think moving around in BIOS is not smooth either.
