OpenSUSE Install :: System Frequently Freezes The Screen

Jul 15, 2011

The system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought

I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezes After GRUB (Normal Or Failsafe) Boot Splash Screen

Apr 17, 2011

I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

Hardware :: Centos 5.5 System Hangs / Freezes Up More Frequently - Workaround This?

Aug 10, 2010

I recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.

I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.

I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?

My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Screen Freezes Immediately

Jul 1, 2010

When I select it from the grub menu, everything acts normally until the login screen, which freezes immediately (i.e. before I can select my user account or type in my password).I installed from the full openSUSE DVD and chose the GNOME desktop. Before installing, I took openSUSE for a test drive with the GNOME LiveCD and everything seemed to work fine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Freezes PC At BIOS Screen?

Sep 1, 2011

I have a problem where my PC will stop at the BIOS logo screen after a reboot. The keyboard and mouse don't get power ie no lights. I can power off / on and it will boot normally. The problem started after a fresh install and after installing the updates. ie before updates I could reboot and it was ok. I moved from Slackware and have Win7 and they don't have this problem. Also Ubuntu and Arch rebooted normally when I tried them. I have Opensuse 11.4 x64 on it's own HDD (Samsung F3) The system board is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe (Sandy Bridge) and the HDD is on a SATA3 port. Could it have something to do with the EFI BIOS? Would it be worth trying a newer kernel? it may better support my hardware. I'm hesitant as I don't want to break Lirc as it took awhile to get it working properly on the stock kernel.

Also where can I add '/etc/init.d/lirc restart' so I don't have to run it manually every time time I launch XBMC. I couldn't find 'rc.local'

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezes After Update To 11.2?

Nov 24, 2009

I upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.

After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.

Im running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything. Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.

I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.

I'm using pppoe broadband connection. Without internet it works fine. I'm getting the same prob in Linux Mint 9. I've googled for this problem and almost everywhere it is said that this message appears in booting time and after a few moments everything becomes quite ok but my problem doesn't match with them. I don't get this message in booting time. I get this message when I'm on internet.

Every once in a while when I turn on my computer it freezes on the purple screen after the screen where you choose the operating system. When this happens the keyboard doesn't work and I have to hold the power button. I'm using an HP Dv7-3112sa and am running the default 64bit ubuntu from the website.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freshly Installed System Freezes Just After Loading Screen

Jan 27, 2010

I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?

On this particular install (unlike the others) the screen goes unexpectedly blank at seeming random intervals and any motion restores the screen. It is acting like a screen saver with the blank screen option set. My screensaver preferences are set to use a screen saver 'for a 7-minute idle period. The lock screen option is off. For AC power management never is chosen for "put computer to sleep" and 30 minutes is chosen for the "put display to sleep" option.

This is a compaq presario desktop.
