i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 RepliesI have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).

And now i installed some drivers for nvidia gt 320M and restarted the system but it goes blank after the splash screen. how do i get back to the default settings i had? i have a builtin camera in my Acer ASPIRE 4741G laptop. View 2 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
When i some times start up the system the screen switches to a lower resolution.Then when i restart my system and it switches to 1152x864.What can be causing this problem and how do we root out this ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI changed may graphic card, earlier I used NVIDIA FX5500 with nvidia driver, now I was trying to use ATI Radeon 7500, but there are problems with graphic configuration. At first attempt server started but after I changed a screen resolution the monitor went blank. I restarted a computer but after the X server started immediately the monitor wnet blank. I found that for completely for me unknown reasons Xorg was trying to use an NVIDIA glx module with radeon driver. I removed this nvidia driver, I expected ubuntu would be able automatically to set up a proper configuration, but instead of ubuntu complained about a missing driver. I also tried manually to set up some basic config using Xorg -configure but after that the Xorg server was stuck.

At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I rebooted and still went right to black screen. I can get into recovery mode but I can't figure out what's wrong with the computer. Can someone give me a hint. My father is very good with ubuntu but he said that he would just reload the os on it. But I really don't want to go thru that process all over again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a Disney edition Asus EeePC with an xp/9.10 nbr dual boot.The 9" screen has a native resolution of 1024x600, but in xp it can expand that to 1024x768- either by scrolling the desktop up and down a bit, or by what they call "LCD Compress" mode, where ever thing gets squished vertically a bit to fit 768pixels of info in 600 pixels of space.
My daughter uses it to play games on webkinz.com, and their games pop up on a 800px high non resizable or scrollable window, so there are controls and junk that fall off the bottom that can't be reached unless I'm put it in one of the 768 pixel modes. That, and with her task bar set to auto hide, she can play games and have a good time. how do I set up Ubuntu 9.10 to do the same thing? Right now, the only screen resolution in Ubuntu is 1024x600.
I am running 9.10 on a HP Compaq. Every few days X will die. The screen goes blank and will not display anything. I have to SSH in, but even trying various commands like gdm restart does not help. I eventually have to reboot the box. Below is a snippet (hopefully not too large) of dmesg:

Why is it on Ubuntu/Maverick that my display insists on going BLANK after a certain period of computer inactivity EVEN THOUGH I have NO screensaver functions set and the put screen to sleep function in power management is set to NEVER and ALL functions in BIOS are all set to not have display go into suspend mode ?

Nvidia-settings, supposedly, requires .11. I can, of course, downgrade to .11, but I do not know if this is recommended. Is there anyway to get nvidia-settings back without downgrading? What is a good course of action?

I can plug my box into my trusty test monitor, change the res to a config that the Westinghouse will recognize,then switch monitors and all is fine.How can I edit the res and have Slackware remember the settings? This happens every time I reboot. I am logging in as root, I have not added a user yet at this point.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.

as instructed to in the sticky. On rebooting, after the load animation, the screen goes blank/black. If I click around, I can hear some beeps from the OS so I assume that things are running but i just can't see anything.
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10. After the upgrade process, I restarted and chose "Ubuntu, with [the current kernel]" and now I am greeted with a white screen with no login or boot splash. My processor is pegged according to the processor case light. My computer's specs are as follows: AMD Athlon X2 5200+, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, 2GB DDR2 ram, Dell Socket AM2 Motherboard, and 250 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I really need to get this computer to work.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust got an HP dv6-2150 laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7 and 9.04 (9.10 will not work but that's a different story). The screen resolution is too low and is set at the highest option available (1024x768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio). The HP uses the new Intel i3-330m chipset with on-board Intel HD graphics. The system is capable of 1366x768 resolution (16:9) - so how do I get it there? xorg.conf looks real generic - nothing specific to Intel.

The above only works for some but not all, depending on what card you have and whether it actually is supported by additional drivers (proprietary). I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.
So I know now that I reach the login screen, and I know to hit control, alt, f1. However, all attempts to reset the resolution have failed. Here's how it went down. I was working with nvidia driver. Already was frustrated I couldn't get a working wide screen setting for my toshiba hd tv/monitor but that's a seperate issue. I was trying to get the driver to recognize my separate monitor to an hd tv in the living room using the video out. works fine with windows. I got it to recognize, it made me save settings, and then restart. Note resolution settings are set to automatic right now. Then when I restart, I get to ubuntu splash screen, it plays the chime, and shows a blank black screen. Control alt f1 brings me the menu.
I have been told to type (this is just quick type, I used the proper commands in reality)
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phighxserver - xorg
xrandr --output lvds --mode 1024x768
I found one article that gave a three step process.
sudo cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf / etc/x11/xorg.conf.custom
sudo sh -c 'md5sum ' etc'/x11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum'
sudo dpk-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
Nothing gave me any of the results I expected from command doesn't exist to completely irrelevant menus. Start me from the beginning to what I should do. Yes I logged in properly with my username and password to. Do the 'etc' in the command need to be filled with something else like a drive letter or something. I'm so lost, should I disconnect my tv? Also I tried running in safe mode and it said something about display not found.
I was trying to run a program, needs high graphic, suddenly my computer crashed. I had to restart it, now the resolution has changed, I mean its the same as before "1024x768" but the screen has been widened, it looks like it has been stretched, and zoomed. I changed the resolution, but it didn't help.

I found the "resolution= (800x600 for me) under "additional boot options", but I don't know how to use it.
