Ubuntu Installation :: Properly Multi-booting Grub With Windows First

Mar 5, 2010

I wanted windows to appear first in my grub2 menu so I renamed the 30_os_probe file(or whatever it felename is) to 09_os_probe so that it comes before the 10 linux file, problem is whenever these files get updated the updater is unable to find the 30_os_probe file since I renamed it and recreates it... leaving me with two versions (09 and 30) with 09 being of course outdated.

The updater also fails to run update-grub and instead attempts to update grub.cfg manually... and fails. I had to manually do a sudo update-grub.

Is there any way to fix this so its all updated automatically while leaving windows the top choice? No manual intervention required beyond clicking "install updates"?

Also, is it possible to JUST have the Windows and Ubuntu choices, no Ubuntu recovery, memtest, alternative(older) kernels for Ubuntu, etc in the grub menu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Disc Boot Failure - Insert System Disk And Press Enter

Jan 7, 2010

I bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).

So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.

I've tried to install 9.10 on my PowerBook G3, with both a CD and DVD. However, the system shows a folder with a question mark and boots into the default OS 8.6. I even tried with an older ubuntu disc (8 point something) that had worked on another computer, but this didn't work either. I know the computer can boot from the CD drive, as it works with my OS X 10.4 DVD.

Fedora Installation :: New F14 Has Taken The Entire Disc Almost?

Dec 28, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.

I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.

Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

Fedora Installation :: Fedora Disk Requirements - Need 9 GB Of Disc Space

Jan 19, 2011

I was reading the fedora Disk requirements and it said you need 9 GB of disc space. Which partition should this 9 GB of space be on? I plan on having a / root partition, /home partition, a swap partition, and a /boot partition.

Quote: 1.2.3. Hard disk space requirements for all architectures The complete packages can occupy over 9 GB of disk space. Final size is entirely determined by the installing spin and the packages selected during installation. Additional disk space is required during installation to support the installation environment. This additional disk space corresponds to the size of /Fedora/base/stage2.img (on Installation Disc 1) plus the size of the files in /var/lib/rpm on the installed system.

In practical terms, additional space requirements may range from as little as 90 MiB for a minimal installation to as much as an additional 175 MiB for a larger installation. Additional space is also required for any user data, and at least 5% free space should be maintained for proper system operation. [URL]

Server :: OpenSUSE Not Booting Properly

Apr 14, 2010

I am a Java developer for a small company that develops web based solutions to our clients. My Linux skill levels are somewhere between newbie and experienced. The company I'm working for has hosted server that is self managed due to the nature of the software that we develop. The server is located in a data center and the host is fully responsible for maintaining the hardware.Recently the motherboard of the server failed and had to be replaced, this happened promptly, however when the server was booted up I was notified that our Linux is giving problems starting up.I was given access to the server via a Raritan lara (KVM-over-IP).

This enabled me to configure the network again.A few things I've noticed with this however. The old network interface was named eth0 while after the swap the new one is named eth1. There is a failure message for bringing up the NIC named eth0 (old non-existing one).Further after the re-configuring of the NIC (IP, subnet etc) I could connect to the server via SSH, our Apache was running without any visible issues (didn't notice anything in the Apache erroe log). The web frontend on JBoss was running good but I kept getting the failure to start eth0 message on startup. As well through the KVM device you never saw the login prompt, it just hangs on some point (once it was after saying httpd2 started up successfully and another after CRON).I have no idea of where to go look for this issue and I can't even say for sure that it's after the motherboard issue as I could use SSH without a problem after the NIC configuration as I used to connect to the server.I've further looked at dmseg but that also doesn't give any indication for me.

Fedora Installation :: Disc Was Not Found In Any Of CDROM Drives?

Jun 18, 2009

When installing FC 11 after a few questions about language I got:

"The Fedora disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives ...."

I read a couple of the threads on the problem and it seemed people were shooting in the dark for answers. Two issues mentioned were SCSI and DMA problems. If I go into the bios and disable the DMA or SCSI driver, and then I re-enable them after installing Fedora, will Fedora see the DMA or SCSI? Or will the fact that they were disables during installation keep Fedora from recognizing them later?

It seems that this error is not exclusive to FC 11 either. Older fedoras, as well as non RPM distros seem to be intermittently effected as well.I have verified the MD5 of the iso, and have verified the cd against the iso. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.

Ubuntu :: Grub2 No Longer Booting Into Windows Properly

Fedora :: Booting F15 (64) Install DVD - System Hangs

Jun 3, 2011

As most of us know when you start the machine with the Install Disc in the drive you get a menu that reads:

Welcome To Fedora 15!
Install a new system or upgrade an existing system
Install system with basic video driver
Rescue installed system
Boot from local drive
Memory test

But when you try to boot the install DVD on and EFI based Mac...you only get
Booting Fedora 15 in 3...2...1 ...and then the system hangs.

If any users are having trouble with Fedora Install Media...you can usually use the Install Media from a previous release! In this case, I used the Fedora 14 (64-Bit) disc to install Fedora 15 by simply replacing the 'F14' with a 'F15' in the URLs of the Install and Update repository dialog boxes.

Ubuntu Installation :: System Not Booting Up With USB LiveCD / Vista Installer

Apr 11, 2010

I have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.

1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive.
2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu.
3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,

Partition 1 NTFS (Primary) ~50GB
Partition 2 NTFS (Primary) ~100GB
Partition 3 EXT4 (Extended)
Root EXT4 (Logical) ~20GB
Swap Linux-swap ~2GB
Home EXT4 (Logical) ~129GB

4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine.
5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).

-Everything was fine until now -

6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message.
7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.

Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.
