I have tried loading 11.4 from the DVD from Linux Magazine. Everything goes swimmingly until I get to using it when the screen shows black rectangles, is "twitchy" and nothing works properly. I currently run 11.3 which works fine.
View 3 RepliesI have two instances of OpenSuse 11.4 installed as guests under XenServer. The first one is running KDE and the second LXDE. I can connect via TightVnc to the KDE guest. When connecting to the LXDE guest the client window is black with an X cursor. Both systems have identical Xorg.conf files and identical xinet.d/vnc files. The logs show that xinetd is starting vnc on the LXDE guest. The LXDE process is running, and lxde.log doesn't contain any obvious problems.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI could upgrade openSUSE 11.4 on my desktop but when trying to do the same procedure on my girlfriend's laptop, after the zypper update part (and the reboot asked), now we can get it to boot.
After selecting suse from GRUB it shows some code (too fast to be read) then black screen forever. I erased the VGA option before booting and now it gets stuck in

I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?
Also noticed the following,
1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.

I've been running openSuse 11.2 for a while on my notebook.Today I turned it off at work and came home. When I tried to turn it on, it boots, shows a black screen written 'GRUB' and then NOTHING. It doesn't complete the boot process.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 11.04 32bit on three different computers. The problem is that while working, suddenly some of the graphics become like black rectangles which are not refreshed.
This is happening out of nowhere and is very annoying. The problem did not occur on version 10.
however as i mentioned, it occur on three different computers.
Every time me or another user uses the "log out" option were faced with a black screen that does not go away, unless the computer is restarted. i've left it for an hour thinking it might have just slowed down or something but that was a no go, and it happens each time you try to use it. the strange thing is if the black screen is up programs still run. i have a media server running most of the time and i have no problem accessing it while the black screen is showing.
Another problem im having is that sometimes when a user logs in they have no sound. the sound icon is showing that no sound is installed, but when another user logs in there is no problem and sound works fine.
Lastly i dont know if this is a feature or a problem. the first user to log in will always have control over the network connection. for example if my mother logs in first the icon to switch connections will show up on the top of her screen and she has full access to what connections she wants to use, also her account is just a basic user account. now when i log in i wont have the network icon on the top of my screen, and my account is the main admin account.
Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.
Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.
I've recently installed Debian v8.1 and installed Nvidia driver 340.46. In nvidia-settings I am able to enable my second monitor and enable it/set it's position..etc. My second monitor is not being detected in Debian Display and is 'on' but only showing a black screen. I've tried researching and implementing various 'fixes', but I'm not having any luck.
I'm running dual GTX 570's with a monitor plugged into one each (DVI). I noticed in my xorg.conf under Section "Screen" I have an option "MultiGPU" "Off"; would this be part of the issue?
I've tried:
- purging all nvidia drivers and re-installing
- installing different versions of nvidia drivers
- add nomodeset in grub
I installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP.During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost.I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen.
Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php)via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost.n again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now.
Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me baloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore.I remember one thing thating reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?
I have this very frustrating problem... I'm trying to build a Linux-based HTPC (Home Theatre PC). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as the operating system, and it works fine when I have it connected to my 17" Samsung monitor. However, when I connect the HTPC to the TV via VGA I get a black screen after "startx" (I can access the console through recovery mode though). Ubuntu is running gnome, so I guess it's a gnome related problem?
I would have thought it was a problem with the drivers to graphics card, but since it's working on my 17" monitor I've ruled that out. The TVs resolution is 1024x768. What can be causing this? Apperently there's some difference between my monitor and my TV (forgetting the fact that it is indeed a TV, not a monitor), but what? I've previously run Windows on the same hardware without problems, and thought I should give Linux a shot. It doesn't look good...
When i use the shutdown-command in the terminal as root, it nearly works. It starts to shut down, and it looks like all programs and the kernels shuts down. I end up with a black screen, sometimes with the ubuntu-logo on, but it never powers off. I have to force it off by holding the power button. When i use the graphical interface to shut it down, it works perfectly. The poweroff-command works without problem too.

when I boot and login to a fresh install of Ubuntu, everything goes fine, the login screen appears, I login. Then the cursor appears on a black screen. This is normal. Then when the desktop should appear, on the very left edge of the screen, about 5 pixels in size, you can see the panel and the rest of the desktop. But I stress, You still see the cursor. In this small area, you can right click as you, even click on the menu and it will come down, you can see it. I can click on Ubuntu SC and the cursor will turn to a loading symbol. But then nothing again. I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and terminal will come on fine. So far, this has happened on a live CD of Maverick, A live USB of Maverick, A Natty Narwhal Fresh Install, A Maverick Fresh install, A Karmic Old Install and That same Karmic After going through a Distro upgrade via Ctrl + Alt + F2 to 11.04. I've gotten all the updates for all of them (A slow, bandwidth wasting process), and this doen't happen on other computers, even ones with lower graphics cards then mine. Additionally, on the same computer on a seperate partion, I can load my main Maverick just fine, Indicateing that it can't be a hardware problem. After searching across the internet, I'm at loss to an answer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu has been crashing on boot. I used a recovery mode kernal and went into failsafe mode, upon which point a msgbox told me to switch to low graphics. Then Ubuntu looked completely normal and functional with no problems. To me - an Ubuntu amateur, it seems like a driver problem and that running in failsafe mode will have its setbacks.

I have Windows 7 Home from Acer and I installed Mandriva OS from USB(from USB because this Acer doen't have a DVD drive). It was OK, but I want reinstall Windows 7 and so I did. Now I have Windows 7 Professional and it wrote over Mandriva's GRUB. It wasn't a big problem. For a while I was just using Windows 7 but now I am thinking that I need some OS with Linux and I am thinking about Ubuntu. But when I tried to boot from USB with Ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS POST.
I was trying many applications to create a bootable USB drive and many versions of Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions), but nothing worked. I tried to Google for answers but I found many problems where all booting goes to black screen but in my problem Windows 7 boots fine from disc but from USB doesn't work.
I'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.
I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.
I get a black screen whether I use Ubuntu's driver or ATI's driver, but when I use the default it works fine without an desktop effects. Catalyst installed without any errors.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOpenSuse 11.3 with nVidia drivers.I have the screen working fine though it only runs in 1600x1200@75 using the nVidia driver (GTX260 card).When I play a game in full screen mode all seems OK but when I exit the game then I just get the mouse pointer on a black screen.There must be something present since the cursor changes as I move it, normal pointer -> hand over a link etc. It's just that black on black isn't very readable.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

Because of some display problems such as openSUSE freezes with external monitors, I have included xorg repository and updated relevant packages. A couple of days ago, suddenly my system started not refreshing the screen properly. For example, when I change a folder in Nautilus, the file pane is blank even though there are lots of files. The files appear when I move mouse cursor around or I activate some other window with alt-tab, and get back. Or in OpenOffice Witer, if I press arrow keys, there are lots of residual image of the cursor. So the screen is not properly refreshed right now.

I am seeing colored/static rectangles covering the green wallpaper and when scrolling in Firefox. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue, and is this the driver I should be using?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

A recent OpenSuse 11.2 update is causing one to view a black screen with an X in the Tight VNC window of the remote machine when connecting with VNC Viewer (i.e. vncviewer IPAddress:1 ) in a console. I have two OpenSuse11.2 machines (one with no updates since 11/2009) and one I updated this week (12/16/2009). I am able to successfully use Tight VNC to connect to the OpenSuse11.2 machine without recent updates but get a black screen when attemmpting to connect to a recently updated OpenSuse 11.2 machine. My source machine is also a OpenSuse11.2 desktop with current updates.

This is my first Linux so i'm kind of rookie.OK, let's start.I installed it something like 1 month ago and everything looks good until now. When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn't change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?
View 3 Replies View RelatedVNC is still now working with xinitd.d. I have done a standard installation with KDE and start VNC with xinitd.d. The system is fully patched. The VNC client connects but the screen remains black. All hints on the internet (IPv6, displaymanger) don't work for me.
