I have recently updated my ATI drivers to Catalyst 10.10 (ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run) from the AMD website and I have not been able to get KWin to enable compositing.

I am using:

Fedora :: Systems Desktop Slows To A Crawl When Kwin's Compositing Is Enabled

Jan 10, 2011

I was just curious for the ATI users out there that are running KDE on Fedora 14 have any of you experienced any performance issues? My systems desktop slows to a crawl when Kwin's compositing is enabled, however in KDE 4.4 there were no issues at all. My desktop I built is a rather modest build just for development nothing too High end on the machine, however KDE and it's effects surely should run. I also use xfce so I switched to that and gave up on KDE 4.5

OpenSUSE :: Error: RPM Failed: Error: Package Kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.i586 Is Not Installed

I'm running 11.2 KDE 4.3.5, recently every time I've tried to use the Updater Applet I get this error after choosing to install an update: PackageKit Error internal-error: Installation aborted by user. Then I run YaST to try to manually install the update and get the following error:

Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.i586 is not installed. Really unsure how to fix this but it's only blocking updates/patches, I can download new programs fine.

Aug 30, 2010

I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

OpenSUSE :: KDE/Kwin: On Keyboard Shortcuts & Ctrl + F10?

Jan 26, 2010

I am trying to find out where in the system are the files that store information on the following: 1. keyboard shortcuts, and 2. which applications and which windows were open before the session ended. Regarding (2): I really like the fact that when I log back in, OpenSuse pops up all the windows that I had open before I last logged out. I know that this information must be stored somewhere. And most probably in my home folder. But I can't seem to find it in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 Regarding (1): Again, I really like the Mac-OS style behavior that one gets with Ctrl+F9/F10. But sometimes I invoke it inadvertently when - as far as I can remember - my fingers were on the trackpad only. I have not been able to figure out how I do it. But I would like to be able to do it consciously - without pressing Ctrl+F9/F10. Does anyone know what could be happening. i have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop with an otherwise annoyingly sensitive track pad.

OpenSUSE :: Compositing Is Temporarily Disabled?

Aug 26, 2010

This is probably already on these forums, but I recently re-installed suse 11.3 and had the desktop effects working fine with the desktop cube animation and everything. But not the case this time...I resume compositing, and try my desktop effect shortcuts, but nothing happens and it comes up saying for me to press Alt+Shift+F12 to resume the compositing again. I do that, but still nothing, and I even re-apply the desktopct settings completely and restart the computer and it comes up saying that none of them were activated or something in the notifications pop-up on the bottom right of the screen. I thought I downloaded the right files (OpenGL??) from the repositories along with basically anything I thought would make it work.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Enable GLX Compositing

Aug 6, 2010

I have been going crazy for a few days trying to enable compiz on my tc1100. I have a GeForge 420 legacy card and I compiled the proprietary NVIDIA driver. I realize that this is an old card. So perhaps that is why NVIDIA compositing is not enabled by default. If I go to Desktop settings and try to enable 3D effects, it tells me that compositing is not enabled. So I figured I best go with xlg. I installed all that is necessary for compiz-fusion. However, the command glx is not recognised. I also cannot find a package called xlg. Only patterns-openSUSE-xlg. Shouldn t there be a package for xlg? How do I enable compositing??

Fedora :: Wine/opengl/32 To 64 Bit - Cannot Load OpenGL When Try To Start WoW

Oct 19, 2009

I just upgraded from FC8 (32-bit) to FC11 (64-bit). In doing so, I backed up my entire World of Warcraft folder so I could try to avoid having to download and install it all over again. However, I've now reinstalled wine (64-bit now), and the nvidia drivers from the rpmfusion repos (also 64-bit), and when I try to start WoW, it says it cannot load OpenGL. I'm wondering if anyone knows what's up, and if there's a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling WoW.

OpenSUSE :: Error: Compositing Is Not Supported On Your System

Dec 1, 2010

I am receiving the following error when trying to enable Compositing in Desktop Settings for KDE4 in openSuse 11.3-Xen

Code:
Error: Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available. I want to have desktop effects enabled but can't seem to figure out how to get this done. "Advanced" Tab is greyed out. "Enable desktop effects" is greyed out.

[Code]...

This worked to get X up and running in the Xen kernel. However, I'm pulling what hair I have left trying to figure out how to enable compositing in Xen. The entire motivation for my upgrade was this one feature (amongst some other things).

Please show me where I'm going wrong. I hope this is not a "live with it" type of scenario due to my using Xen.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unabling Compositing With Nouveau On 11.3?

Jul 16, 2010

Desktop effects are not enabled and in system settings there is the following message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues: Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."

The nouveau driver is installed. Peering at /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get three pieces of information

- driver ="nv"
- composite ="off"

- threats of war, famine, death and the other one if I edit the file by hand

I tried Xorg -configure and tested the result as it prompts, but that file seemed to contain errors

I can't find anything in YaST to edit the file

- is "nv" correct?

Apart from backing up xorg.conf (which I have) and firing up a text editor to change "off" to "on" does anyone have any more intelligent suggestions?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 NVIDIA Drivers And X Compositing - Or XComposite And XDamage

Jul 3, 2011

I've set up a basic 11.4 server/workstation at my home and am having trouble post-nvidia install when it comes to dual-monitors and compositing. Now, I've looked at many posts here and have not found an answer, since most of the answers are obviously for single-monitor setups. The reason I think this is that all the solutions render my second monitor useless (ie, blackscreen/does not function).

Background: I've set up the nvidia 275 drivers via blacklisting neauveau(sorry if I have misspelled) and installing the package [nvidia drivers] from the nvidia website. Everything works great, the login screen comes up on the correct monitor! (I'm quite excited about this, for Ubuntu it took a startup script which, for some reason, rendered full-screen quakelive across two screens instead of one. It was win-lose).

The error I'm getting in the configuration utility for KDE is that compositing is not available because the extensions XComposite and XDamage are not available. These are available and effects work fine if I disable my second monitor. How can I enable for two?

Here's my xorg.conf. I've tried removing this and restarting KDE without and this disables my second monitor, but allows for compositing as mentioned before.

General :: Filesystem Check Is Failed

Jan 23, 2010

I have got arch Linux dual booting with Win XP on my laptop. I have been getting a filesystem check error since yesterday and am unable to start Arch. Upon googling and searching the arch fora, I came upon some advice which I tried which has not worked yet. Hence the new post.Basically, I was attempting to print something off and accidentally chose a printer that was not connected to my laptop. After half a minute or so, it repeatedly started giving me notifications that the printer was not connected...in excess of 200 messages that the printer was not working which continued to pop up despite me canceling the print job. The whole system got really sluggish (for the first time in the last year) and I had to restart the laptop upon which the boot messages appear. It gets to the point where its loading the various filesystems. It mounts root and says it fine.

I tried fsck which tells me that home and boot are still mounted. So I booted up using an Ubuntu Live CD and checked and repaired each file system which it successfully did. Upon rebooting into Arch, I am getting the same message.I have not installed anything new and had upgraded the whole system a few days before the problem started.

OpenSUSE :: Cairo Dock With OpenGL Not Running - 11.3?

Jul 21, 2010

I recently upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3. I had to manually install nVidia drivers to get the desktop working correctly (compiz was enabled), now the system runs fine except for cairo-dock which doesn't start on KDE boot.Running it from console and choosing Yes when asked for using OpenGL, it returns an error

djechelon@MONSTR:~> cairo-dock

After upgrade to 11.3 I performed a full distro upgrade via YaST by updating all the packages if a newer version was available, so I'm using the latest version of all the packages on my system. OpenSUSE :: KDE Desktop Effects Cannot Revert To OpenGL

Jan 27, 2011

Last night I was playing around with Desktop Effects and set the composting engine to Xrender, it was openGL. And things started to slow down tremendously. There is now lag on Alt+F1, lag when mousing over hidden taskbar, lag when moving windows, etc. I was trying to get rid of a trail of images when moving windows around. I created more problems. Things got even better when I tried to change back to openGL:

"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Setting will be reverted back to previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advancde options, especially changing the composting type." The same thing happens when I click on "Default", the default options disable desktop effects.

Fedora :: Check Packages After Failed Update?

Jul 4, 2010

I've been a long time ubuntu/debian user, and I decided to give fedora a try. Durng my first set of updates after install, the updater (gpk) seemed to stall on an 'updating libraries' step (it lasted for over 12 hours). Anyway, I force quit the program, restarted the system, and all appears fine. What I wanted to ask is this; is there some way to check the yum log to see if the update completed successfully, or an equivalent to 'apt-get -f install' to fix any broken/partially installed packages.
