Occasionally, kwin will crash and recover itself, but afterwards, my system starts using GTK notifications (yellow popup bubbles with the pie graph countdown timer). I've tried restarting knotify4 to no avail.

I'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find out where in the system are the files that store information on the following: 1. keyboard shortcuts, and 2. which applications and which windows were open before the session ended. Regarding (2): I really like the fact that when I log back in, OpenSuse pops up all the windows that I had open before I last logged out. I know that this information must be stored somewhere. And most probably in my home folder. But I can't seem to find it in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 Regarding (1): Again, I really like the Mac-OS style behavior that one gets with Ctrl+F9/F10. But sometimes I invoke it inadvertently when - as far as I can remember - my fingers were on the trackpad only. I have not been able to figure out how I do it. But I would like to be able to do it consciously - without pressing Ctrl+F9/F10. Does anyone know what could be happening. i have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop with an otherwise annoyingly sensitive track pad.

I have a clean new installation of openSUSE 11.4, but I can't enable the desktop effects in it. My video is nVidia GTS250 and I haven't any issues with enabling desktop effects in the past.

suse 11.4 tumbleweed, kde 4.6.5, on laptop dell latitude E6510, with intel i7, 4Mb ram, NVIDIA 3100 Yesterday all effects was working well, no update and no changes, and today I dont know why but plasma crashed at startup, after a couple of try I login on gnome and renamed /home/.kde4 folder, now kde starts but when I try to enable some effects, cube, wabbling windows and others, kwin message appear sayng that effects cannot be enabled.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAccidentally I pressed alt-shift-f11 (instead of f12) and kde notified me that I switched the window manager layout to spiral: now my panel is not transparent anymore (obviously, with effects enabled). I have a standard desktop install of opensuse 11.4, with the kde themes I found out of the box. How can I restore the previous situation? If I press alt-shift-f11 nothing changes, except enabling or disablin the tiling (was it activated by default?).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running KDE 4.4.4 Stable from the openSuSE Repository for KDE 4.4.4 stable as included with 11.3.At first after initial installation Kontact worked and I could access Email, Address Book, Calendar, etc. from the icon bar. Now, Kontact starts, opens the Summary page, but no selections respond, only the Kwin responds to terminate the application, it just seems to hang and has to be killed to terminate. Anyone have similar issue or ideas on what may be causing it? I can start KMail, Kaddressbook, as separate applications and all respond as normal.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running 11.2 KDE 4.3.5, recently every time I've tried to use the Updater Applet I get this error after choosing to install an update: PackageKit Error internal-error: Installation aborted by user. Then I run YaST to try to manually install the update and get the following error:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.i586 is not installed. Really unsure how to fix this but it's only blocking updates/patches, I can download new programs fine.
I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.
I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?
for some unfathomable reason Kwin just went all Compiz on my Kubuntu Natty 11.04. Fresh install, x86 Emachines V140 AMD GPU, Mobility Radeon 4200, radeon driver. Anyhoo, desktop effects got disabled out of the blue, probably after some setting I've changed, and there was no way to get them back. I'd hit enable effects in the Desktop Effects panel, whereupon I would get a notification that dekstop effects were disabled because of another function using Kwin, and asking me to hit CRTL ALT F12 to restart them. Which would get me nowhere. I tried disabling functionality checks, getting the message:

I used ubuntu and recently install Mandriva in to my laptop.I install both Kde and gnome desktop.I like to have kwin effects in kde . But i cant enable Kwin animation in kde and Compiz fusion animation occur in both Kde and gnome.

Also when I first login it says KWIN has crashed, but I see it running in the service Manager. I have no internet service without KDE services.
View 2 Replies View Relatedfor instance, it said that "docky needs proper composition to work properly" when it was working properly before. after having too many flash applications open, after clicking on a link to a videos video, everything crashed, and it said that *for the 20th time now in a week* that kwin has crashed. then i tried to log out and log back in since that normally fixed everything, but i couldn't log out, instead i had to killall xorg but all that showed next was a black screen instead of what it should have shown, the login screen. i had reboot from the terminal and the login screen was normal, but when i booted in to kde, everything that needed opengl and composition crashed. docky doesn't have a black box around it, but it won't intellihide like it should *and i tried to set it back to that setting but it didn't give me the option to*

My systems desktop slows to a crawl when Kwin's compositing is enabled, however in KDE 4.4 there were no issues at all. My desktop I built is a rather modest build just for development nothing too High end on the machine, however KDE and it's effects surely should run. I also use xfce so I switched to that and gave up on KDE 4.5
View 14 Replies View RelatedI tried KDE 4.4. I'm back to using KDE 4.3.5. Very bad experience for me, maybe it's just my system openSuSE 11.1 on AMD x86_64 with 4gb memory. Dolphin was unusable. Deleting a file cause it to crash, go in to a directory with a large number (20,000) of images and it would hang and eventually crash. PIM has removed some of the features I used, main one being ability to add Custom Fields to Contacts and assign categories.
In general, the whole thing was slower, not faster, probably because now it requires Neopmunk to be running and the Akondi server. I'll wait a while and try again and see if it gets stable in first update.

When I lauch "apparence" again, gnome-settings-daemon is restarted and it make X restart ! I sometimes use webkit in Konqueror to view certain sites, but lately I haven't been able to since Konqueror crash everytime I activate webkit. I searched for this issue on the web and found among others this:[URL].. I downgraded Flash to 10.0.45xxx and it seems like Konqueror runs fine with webkit now. However I now got this message browsing Hattrick.org:

I have a huge problem with my file server (OpenSuse 11.3 - 64bit, kernel-2.6.34.7-0.7-default). I've just installed an Intel SASUC8I card, connected 3 of the 7 Samsung 2TB drives I have to it and after about one hour, it dropped 2 of the disks. I've managed to trace the problem to the card BIOS, which I've replaced with the non-raid edition, so it should now work fine with the kernel raid now. The problem is that I can't find a way to "un-fail" these 2 disks. I'm more than positive, that these drives are just fine, only the controller was misbehaving. The dropout also couldn't have created any data inconsistency either, since the 2 drives dropped out virtually at the same time and there was no writing being done at the time. I've tried add/re-add, I get either mdadm: cannot get array info for /dev/md0 or mdadm: add new device failed for /dev/sdi1 as 7:
Invalid argument (depending on the raid being run or being stopped, in either case, mdstat reports it to be inactive)
For a normal or forced assemble, I get mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 5 drives and 1 spare - not enough to start the array.I've been googleing like crazy, also trying to get info from mdadm's help and man, but nothing seems to deal with such a freak accident. An other interesting thing is, that if I reboot the system, mdstat shows md0 as inactive, but lists all the devices with no flags. It's only after a run command, that it changes to the 5 remaining devices, all with (S) flags. Alternatively: does anyone know where device failure info is stored? If I could in some way remove this information from the system (even by reinstalling the OS), I should be able to reassemble the array... Or is it stored in the member drive super-blocks? About 80% of this array's data is backed up, so if all else fails, I can restore most of its content, but I'd much prefer to reassemble this one as a whole, since there was absolutely no chance of data corruption.
For a few days now every time I start xdvi, Xorg crashes completely. The screen freezes and no input seems to have any effect. So I have to reset the PC. I'm on a 64 bit 11.4, KDE setup, the graphics driver is nouveau.

I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 x64 on my Intel Core 2 Quad machine with 8GB of RAM nstallation went perfect. After the main installation, I've installed the XEN-kernel. Booting into the XEN-kernel goes fine.But, now I want to install the first domU (paravirtualized). I use the same installation disk but OpenSUSE 11.2 won't install. It crashes directly. Neither the x64 or the x86 version works.The strange thing is that I can install OpenSUSE 11.2 as "full virtualized".Also, OpenSUSE 11.1 (paravirtualized!) as a domU works perfect!!

The crash happened when I was reading a web page and the screen went black and the mouse pinterr dropped to the middle of the bottom of the screen and froze. I had to do a warm reboot to get going again. I'm using 11.4 with KDE.This is the section of the /var/log/messages from around the time of the crash at 16.42/16.44.
