OpenSUSE :: No Selections Respond Only Kwin Responds To Terminate Application

Aug 3, 2010

I am running KDE 4.4.4 Stable from the openSuSE Repository for KDE 4.4.4 stable as included with 11.3.At first after initial installation Kontact worked and I could access Email, Address Book, Calendar, etc. from the icon bar. Now, Kontact starts, opens the Summary page, but no selections respond, only the Kwin responds to terminate the application, it just seems to hang and has to be killed to terminate. Anyone have similar issue or ideas on what may be causing it? I can start KMail, Kaddressbook, as separate applications and all respond as normal.

OpenSUSE :: Terminate Not Responding Processes?

May 28, 2011

Just now Rhythmbox has stopped working. I can't restart it, so I thought I could kill the process to start it again. Is there something like the windows task manager in openSUSE or another way to list all processes and to kill one? I googled an found a few old threads saying that there is a performance monitor which is able to to that, but I can't find that either.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Opensuse 11.3 Lockup With KWin / Everything Will Freeze Except Mouse Pointer

Aug 30, 2010

I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

OpenSUSE :: KDE/Kwin: On Keyboard Shortcuts & Ctrl + F10?

Jan 26, 2010

I am trying to find out where in the system are the files that store information on the following: 1. keyboard shortcuts, and 2. which applications and which windows were open before the session ended. Regarding (2): I really like the fact that when I log back in, OpenSuse pops up all the windows that I had open before I last logged out. I know that this information must be stored somewhere. And most probably in my home folder. But I can't seem to find it in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 Regarding (1): Again, I really like the Mac-OS style behavior that one gets with Ctrl+F9/F10. But sometimes I invoke it inadvertently when - as far as I can remember - my fingers were on the trackpad only. I have not been able to figure out how I do it. But I would like to be able to do it consciously - without pressing Ctrl+F9/F10. Does anyone know what could be happening. i have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop with an otherwise annoyingly sensitive track pad.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Kde Unvoluntarily Set Kwin Layout To Spiral

May 6, 2011

Accidentally I pressed alt-shift-f11 (instead of f12) and kde notified me that I switched the window manager layout to spiral: now my panel is not transparent anymore (obviously, with effects enabled). I have a standard desktop install of opensuse 11.4, with the kde themes I found out of the box. How can I restore the previous situation? If I press alt-shift-f11 nothing changes, except enabling or disablin the tiling (was it activated by default?).

OpenSUSE :: System No Longer Responds To Removable Media Such As Flash Drives And Insertions Of DVD/CD Disks?

May 20, 2010

Through some recent update, which one I am not sure, my system no longer responds to removable media such as flash drives and insertions of DVD/CD disks. Whereas before, for instance, if I inserted a USB flash drive, the "Device Notifier" would pop up, tell me that a new device had been detected, and ask me what I wanted to do with it, now nothing. "My Computer" (sysinfo:/)does not update either. The kernel knows the device is there, since I can see it when I do "lsusb". OpenSuSE x86_64 11.2.

OpenSUSE Network :: Get The NFS Server To Respond To An Automated Search?

opensuse v11.3 I enabled a NFS server on a host, set up a couple of exports, opened the ports in the firewall. When I open the NFS Client on another host and select "Choose", there is popup that states "Scanning for hosts on this LAN...". Then it returns an error "No NFS server found on your network. ..." That's funny because I had previously mounted the two exported directories already by entering the server name manually. How do I get the NFS server to respond to an automated search?

OpenSUSE :: Zypper Won't Die / Dump Process Out Of Memory Without Requiring It To Respond To Signal?

Feb 4, 2010

This is opensuse 11.2.

Somehow zypper is running at 100% cpu and won't die with command line kill, the system monitor kill, terminate or anything. I set it's priority to the lowest it will go, tried to stop it then kill it, nothing works as it simply is not responding to anything and it has been running now for 47 hours.

Is there a way to simply dump a process out of memory without requiring it to respond to a signal? because signals are doing nothing.

Fedora :: Unable To Get Enough Cycles To Terminate Anything?

Mar 3, 2011

I have a machine running Fedora 14 and a bunch of movies stored on it as '.iso' images. It is connected to my home theater. I used to use VLC to play these movies and it worked great for a long time. About 4 months ago, about an hour or hour-and-a-half into a movie, the audio suddenly "disappears" and the machine goes CRAZY with almost 100% of the CPU spent writing to the SWAP. At first I thought the machine was locked, but it isn't; it's so doggone busy writing swap. I am unable to get enough cycles to terminate anything. I found the swap activity through System Monitor - it was ABRUPT. Sound stopped, machine became preoccupied with swap.

I have removed/reinstalled VLC, the machine has undergone a couple kernel updates, and I have removed/reinstalled a number of things associated with audio (CD ripper, mpeg stuff, etc.) yet the problem persists. I don't know what happened or when (update-wise). Any body got any ideas? While a solution would be great, I'd also be happy with a couple decent suggestions on what to look for.

Server :: Httpd Sessions Never Terminate

Dec 10, 2010

I have an issue with my web server. We are running RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 with Apache 2.0 and Tomcat 5.5. The situation has arisen that the httpd sessions never terminate. New connections continue and continue to be created and never die. I have restarted the apache services to reset the connection and have even rebooted the server, however, to no avail. Yes, that does the trick of getting the web sites operational, however, this is not a solution.

I have searched and searched here, www.google.com/linux to no avail. I have looked through the apache.org bug tracker and can't find anything like what I am experiencing. This happened 6 months ago and I got lucky and it stopped, however, the situation has resurfaced. I have reviewed the logs and found nothing that provides any insight.

During the business day, the number of httpd connections continue to grow and I decided to let it see how high it would get before the web sites would crash. That magical number is 203. Now that it is later in the evening and about 2 hours since I restarted the httpd services, I now only have 59 connections. However, I'm fairly certain based upon the traffic on these 2 websites, that in the evening, there aren't many connections after 2000 hours.

Debian Installation :: 4.0 Freezes After Environment Selections?

Jan 19, 2010

I've tried this with 4.0r3 and 4.0r7 CDs, using two different networks to access repositories, and the same result each time: install goes fine until the "OK" for the "Desktop/Web Server/Mail Server/etc." selections, it brings up the "Select and install software" page and then it freezes, showing "5%" and "Please wait..." under the progress bar.

If I hadn't built 20+ servers this way I'd think it was me, but it's not... I think. What's going on?

Ubuntu :: Hold-ing A Package Using Dpkg --set-selections?

I'm trying to install wine1.3 but I don't want the (recommended) package ttf-mscorefonts-installer.In previous releases, I can run this to 'hold' the package and prevent it's installation:

Code:
echo ttf-mscorefonts-installer hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections.However, this command doesn't prevent ttf-mscorefonts-installer from being installed along with wine1.3 in maverick.[code]....

it's just that dpkg isn't picking it up.What is going on here, and how can I place a package on permanent hold?

Note: I ended up installing wine1.3 by running:

Code:
sudo aptitude install wine1.3 ttf-mscorefonts-installer= but I don't believe that the package is actually on permanent hold.
