OpenSUSE Install :: What Concerns Use Of Complete 16 GB Memory?

Dec 17, 2010

I am going to install 11.3 on a system with a Phenom X6 and 16 GB memory.I'm now unsure whether to set up a 64 bit system or a 32 bit system with pae.Are they equivalent what concerns use of the complete 16 GB memory? I assume 64 would be more effective? On the other hand there seem to be less problems with the availability and/or installation of applications on a 32 bit system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ready To Install Second HD, But Some Concerns?

Jul 10, 2011

I took out this 120gb HD from an old computer which I recycled. I took out the SATA cable and an IDE cable just in case I would need them for the installation. This would work great as a backup HD for my current 320gb HD. I have never had a backup HD, so I don't know how it works. I have numbered my concerns to make for easy reference.

1. First, however, is one concern I forgot to address. When I looked up the documentation for my computer (Inspirion 530), it mentions that "NOTE: For additional drives, extra screws are not shipped during initial purchase of the computer, but are shipped with the additional drives." This is terrible! Had I known, I would have taken out some screws from the old computer, but now it is gone, and I don't know what kind of screws I need. I don't even know where to buy them.

2. In terms of installing the new HD, I read that all I need to do is connect the SATA cable and the power, and then boot up to BIOS, where I would "activate" my drive. Then, Ubuntu should be able to identify it immediately. Since I am thinking about doing a fresh install to 10.04, I am thinking about formatting this new drive to ext4, and then backing up my important documents/pictures/music onto this second drive.

Finally, I would boot up to the 10.04 live disc, and simply do a fresh install onto the 320gb HD, knowing that my files are backed up on the 120gb one. Would this procedure work fine, or would Ubuntu have trouble identifying the HD?

3. My final concern is regarding automatic backups. Assuming that I am able to install the HD perfectly, and get a fresh install of 10.04, I want a program or mechanism to help me backup on a regular basis. I know that Mac users have a convenient program called "Time Machine" but there is no such counterpart for Linux. I also know that there are some command-line utilities that I can use, but I would like to stick with a GUI.

OpenSUSE Install :: Virtual Memory / Resident Memory Of Server?

Feb 3, 2010

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

OpenSUSE :: Install A Complete Bugzilla System For Internal Use?

Apr 16, 2010

I am running an openSuse 11.1 server.

How easy is it to install a complete Bugzilla system for my own internal use?

Is there an rpm that will set it up automatically?

Is it part of the distro? Or 11.2 or 11.3?

What is the easiest way to install it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 - Complete Lockup On KDE Login?

Jul 16, 2010

I have been running 11.2 32bit on my IBM T43 laptop without issue. Tonight I downloaded 11.3 32bit and installed to HDD. On reboot into new system laptop has complete freeze. Can not do anything but power off to reboot. I also found the same situation if I try to run KDE live off the cd. Oh yes, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 KDE Live CD version.

So here is what I found. On bootup (either HDD install or Live CD desktop) I will goto to tty1 or tty4 to see the boot up process messages. And it get right up to the login prompt without issue. If I then switch back to tty7 (the normal bootup display) after a few seconds the screen and laptop itself completely lockup (freeze). So I power off to reboot.

this time I boot up in tty1 again until login prompt but this time I type root to login. Then I switch to tty7 and now I can see the desktop. I goto the menu to search and load up Kinfocenter but then its freezes again.

So its very frustrating as I can not use this new version of openSUSE on my laptop. It just keeps freezing. Whats worse is I cant see any logs or screen message in tty1 because once it starts to login to desktop it freezes. So I am not even sure how to troubleshoot any further what the issue is. I assume its KDE4 or XOrg server.

OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting For Oracle - Memory Target Not Supported

I'm trying to install oracle (11g R2) on my OpenSuse (11.3), but when I do startup nomount, I got an error:
ORA-00854: MEMORY_TARGET not supported on this system
On web, I found that I need to increase tmpfs because of my memory_target oracle init parameter. I do it with:
mount -t tmpfs shmfs -o size=3G /dev/shm
(previous value to tmpfs (df -h) is 2G).
After that 'startup nomount' runs well, but after reboot, values are the same. So, how to 'save' this new value?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Complete Install Failure?

Apr 28, 2011

I've tried about a billion times to get this to install correctly to no avail. This is the amd64 desktop edition, but I've tried with the 32 bit as well. I have a lenovo W500. The system never boots off the USB. It gets through a bit, with text output, and then stops. Sometimes it doesn't even give an error message, and other times I get something like udev failed while loading some pci device. I've tried re-downloading the iso several times, different USB keys, different USB key creators, CDs, to no avail.

I then thought, well, heck with it, I'll just install 10.10 and upgrade. Nope, there's a GPG key error for some bizarre reason, which is tripping up apt, but it's not going to tell me what key that is so I can go and get it (and apt-key update does nothing). Command line upgrades fail similarly. So finally, I go for broke and try to just install the thing with Wubi. Of course, that eventually crashes too.

It's the x86_64 version. I'm using the standard options all the time including LVM on whole disk.
