In the past month my root folder has become corrupted 3 times. General system restore doesn't help and installing the default kernel doesn't help. I don't expect a forum to be able to help with the corruption issus but is there any way to restore root without a complete re-install? It's a little time consuming.
View 7 RepliesI just backed up a complete copy of my C drive which has been partitioned 3 ways to have both windows and Linux mint on it with the loader which comes up when the computer is turned on. My question is that recently I used Norton ghost to backup my system and it failed to reinstall the grub. Will clonezilla reinstall the boot loader on my drive if I make a complete restore of the entire C drive. Is there any thing else I should be concerned about upon restore which I should take into account? I'm fine now but am asking concerning the future possibility of a restore.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, but have installed quite few add-on. I would like to make an Ubuntu-only machine now, with all the same apps still there, but dont want to go and download everything again. I assume 64 would be more effective?On the other hand there seem to be less problems with the availability and/or installation of applications on a 32 bit system.

I have been running 11.2 32bit on my IBM T43 laptop without issue. Tonight I downloaded 11.3 32bit and installed to HDD. On reboot into new system laptop has complete freeze. Can not do anything but power off to reboot. I also found the same situation if I try to run KDE live off the cd. Oh yes, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 KDE Live CD version.
So here is what I found. On bootup (either HDD install or Live CD desktop) I will goto to tty1 or tty4 to see the boot up process messages. And it get right up to the login prompt without issue. If I then switch back to tty7 (the normal bootup display) after a few seconds the screen and laptop itself completely lockup (freeze). So I power off to reboot.
this time I boot up in tty1 again until login prompt but this time I type root to login. Then I switch to tty7 and now I can see the desktop. I goto the menu to search and load up Kinfocenter but then its freezes again.
So its very frustrating as I can not use this new version of openSUSE on my laptop. It just keeps freezing. Whats worse is I cant see any logs or screen message in tty1 because once it starts to login to desktop it freezes. So I am not even sure how to troubleshoot any further what the issue is. I assume its KDE4 or XOrg server.

latest update to 11.3 a complete failure afterwards on reboot I'm instructed that I must first install kernel and to strike any key to exit which return me to grub menu. thats it for me and Osuse. 11.3 has been one bug after another and to much for me overcome. I will return once a day to see if anyone can fix this/

Since I installed MS2 I messed up grub. Finally I got 11.3 back to its old glory.
What would be the best procedure to create a backup image with all settings and permissions ...just in case ?
i am having problems with privileges i have created a new user with my name, but i cant get root privileges on it. i need the same privileges as the root profile.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to openSUSE (and to Linux). I have try Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and ended with openSUSE that seems to be the one I like. But I have some problem now. The system seems to hang on boot and after searching the Internet I found thread about ATI display driver (and I have ATI) so I installed ATI drivers. The system got worse and playing videos start to be not as it should be (and often freezing). I decided to uninstall these drivers to get my system back as it was but ended with more problem. Now my system don't start. I can boot in some kind of command prompt but nothing else.
Can I do something to restore the system or will I have to reinstall the system? I don't know if I want to reinstall it. I am using a very slow Internet-connection (air-card) and I have had so much headache on the other Linux (before I did end on openSuSE). I like openSuSE (even there is some minor things, like I cannot change my default browser to Opera, a Browser I have been using for almost 10 years but I still can use the Opera so it is a minor thing).
I am about to install a test machine for testing out system configurations and software modifications.Instead of installing a virtual machine I wish to create a secondary partition which holds a "restore image" of the "clean" system. Also I would like to be able to select a system restore function in Grub while booting.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.
Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...
I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.
I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.
What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.
The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.
I need some information if my plan to restore Raid1 will work that way.Two Harddrives only for Data used with Raid 1 (sdb1 and sda1).

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

I have used Ubuntu 8.04 and uprgaded to the new 9.10 both using the gneom desktop. I wanted to work with KDE and SUSE so I bought the Linux Format magazine with the DVD 126 which had SUSE 11.1 with the KDE desk top. I have a Toshiba L455 laptop and had windows 7 on 110 gb and had ubuntu 8.04 on 50 gb and ubuntu 9.10 ob 48 gb. I had ran the installer and it identified both linux systems and I selected to install SUSE in the space allocated to 8.04. It only boots to suse with the option to select windows. It showes 9.10 mixed with suse. I have not used suse. Is there an uninstall that will allow me to start over with the installation after creating a partition first. How can I get 9.10 to boot or how can I recover data from it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedHardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.

I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince the partition of windows7 (C: ) where wubi was installed was too small, I decided to reinstall wubi into another larger partition (E: ), keeping the old root.disk. Sadly when I replaced the root.disk ubuntu cannot boot, the loader says that there is no root.disk file, although it's there... I guess there is some kind of checksum about the virtual disk toward the loader is poiting... So how can I have my old ubuntu installation back?? I still have the old root.disk.
