openSUSE 11.2 installed on machine with 5GB memory but System Information in KDE desktop shows only 3GB total memory. Just added a further 4GB but no change shown in System Information.
Is there something I must do to have sysinfo report true value and does this mean that memory not shown is not being used?
POST BIOS check shows 9GB installed.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwe found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded my laptop to OpenSuse 11.2 few weeks ago. It was fine until last Tuesday, when a system crash occurred during a kernel security update. I think something went wrong with my network connection. I was working on my code and suddenly I lost my base tools such as /bin/ls and /bin/cd. So I tried to restart and got a kernel panic as my kernel was partially broken.
I tried rescue the system, however it did not work. After that I thought I could fix it by reinstalling the OS with minimal server configuration over my existing root partition. (Since I didnt have any other computer or live cd at that time and I was rushing for a demo, I could not reinstall the missing components one by one. And reinstalling the minimal server made sense then )Almost everything went fine ( i needed to do little things like creating gdm user). Now I can use my system and all my applications. But as expected, the pre installed packages in my system now cannot be seen by YaST Software Manager. Is there a way to repopulate the package list?
Another question is, I cannot restart the computer from a Gnome session. Whenever I restart or shutdown, i go back to the login screen, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 which starts the restart progress. How can I fix this?
I have 4GB RAM installed on my PC (ASUS P7H55M-BR, Intel i3 530 2,93Ghz). Onboard video has 32 MB (BIOS config).
It should be this way (or maybe not?):Each slot has 1GB of RAM memory: 4 x 1024 MB = 4096 MB.
Now, subtracting the video memory: 4096 MB - 32 MB = 4064 MB.
It's working on Dual Channel.
But when I am booting the system, the BIOS shows only 3920 MB (3,9GB). Linux shows even lower: 3881 MB.
Memory Remap Feature is enabled at the BIOS config.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA few years back when I was running Linux most of the time I used a program that gave me information on my machine.
It had different themes and such, and it would usually rest vertically along the side of the desktop. It would tell one information on drives, space, memory, I think you could even have it tell you the weather if you entered geographical information.
I know I'm being a bit vague but that's all I can remember, does anyone recall this program? It was pretty popular back then...so I wonder if it's still under development.
When trying to install 11.2 from DVD, the user information I entered at the beginning of the install gets lost. I get to the Automatic Configuration step at the end of the install where the computer needs to reboot, and it asks for my user ID and password (it shouldn't do that). It won't accept the user I created (always says login failed), but it will accept root. That really doesn't matter, because the Automatic Configuration step has done anything, and I have a busted install. I've tried the install 4 or 5 times, but it is always the same problem. I eventually reinstalled 11.1 without any problem (though I did have to click Use Entire Disk on the partition section so it would delete the ext4 partitions created by the 11.2 install and create ext3 partitions).

We have a four socket amd machine, running barcelona processors, with 64gb ram.The system runs for extended periods just fine when the system is running up to or below the 64gb memory limit. A typical load on the machine has short periods where the machine uses heavy amounts of swap space (30+ Gb). We have a swap partition of around 96Gb. When we push the machine into heavy swapping, the machine will fail within 24hrs. Has anyone experienced this problem and is there a solution other than buying more physical memory? Or am I wrong and maybe the physical memory is the issue? I thought maybe it was the memory itself, and after stripping the memory down, I get the same problem...failure upon heavy swapping

I created a tab to look that the Physical Memory in the System Monitor program, which I assume appears to look at the same stats that "top" looks at. In that Physical Memory tab I have 3 tables: Used Memory, Free Memory, and Application Memory.The Used Memory table shows that the system is using .94 of .98 GiBytes. The Free Memory table shows that the system has .5 GiBytes of RAM free.
However the Application Memory shows that only 339 M-Bytes of RAM is being used.Note that "top" shows the same info.So where is the other .6 GiBytes of RAM that the Used Memory table shows as being used?If I look at the process table which is supposed to encompass all of the processes running, including the ones for the OS, then it appears to add up to the 339 M-Bytes being used in the Application Memory table. Is the rest of the memory being held in reserve by the OS to be used as needed? If so, then why when another application is opened the Free Memory goes down instead of staying constant?I also noticed this memory "black hole" when I was running 11.0 on a system with 4 GB of RAM. The OS appeared to "take up" a large chunk of memory that was NOT being used by any applications and making it "disappear" - meaning that the applications were using about 1.3 GiBytes of RAM and Free Memory was showing only .7 GiBytes instead of the over 2 GB of RAM that should be free.
Kmix refuses to show in the system tray at boot. I have gone to settings and made sure "Dock in system tray" is ticked off. I have un-installed and re-installed it. Nothing. btw running Suse 11.2 and the desktop is kde 4.3.1
View 5 Replies View RelatedTo run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

I upgraded my MB, CPU and memory to 4G. I am running 32 bit Lenny. In the BIOS, I see about 3.8G memory. However, in Lenny I see only about 3.2G. Is it normal? Is there something I need to do to get the most out of memory this size, like setting highmem?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I'll try to be brief and to the point here: I've got a couple of C / C++ apps that communicate with one another via shared memory. These worked completely fine until.. well, about twenty minutes ago when I finished making some network card changes and suddenly, I've got a weird problem going on. At one point, Parent app waits for Child app to set a boolean indicating it's finished initialization. This worked fine the last time I ran this app up (a few days ago). But right now, the shared flag never seems to get triggered (I've added a printf("Waiting..."); in Parent app until the flag is set). All the code leading up to it being set in Child app seem to be running smoothly, so I tried spitting out the addresses of the shared memory locations. The addresses mapped by Parent app and Child app are different; this seemed odd, so I went back and wrote a simple miniature app that just opened a shared structure on my own box, and I get the same thing - different addresses - but the miniature apps work just fine.
Is it normal for a shared memory space to be mapped to two different addresses across two processes?
If so, does anyone have any idea what might be the issue at hand with my Parent / Child app scenario? The Child creates the shared memory, the Parent has a wait before it opens it, and if it doesn't exist should fail (opening with PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE)... it doesn't fail so it's evidently there.
All of this worked until literally just a few hours ago and I made some changes to my network cards, and I can't even imagine how that could have changed whether or not shared memory mapping worked...
When openSUSE was installed, GRUB information was installed in the Extended partition rather than in the MBR.
I have a triple boot system: Windows XP Pro, openSUSE, and another popular distro on Linux. The other distro put GRUB info in MBR. Now when I boot up it goes to member first. If I select openSUSE, the GRUB info in the extended partion is accessed and a 2nd selection screen is displayed.
I tried reloading the GRUB data for openSUSE selceting to install it in MBR but this does not seem to work.
How do I get rid of the GRUB stuff in the extended partition so that the 2nd GRUB screen does not get displayed?
I'm trying to meter my memory usage. When I use these different programs, they all show me using different amounts of RAM.

I assume 64 would be more effective?On the other hand there seem to be less problems with the availability and/or installation of applications on a 32 bit system.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI normally use a very lightweight Linux setup. No desktop like Gnome or KDE, just Icewm as the windows manager and nothing else that normal users might consider essential. Well, I do need a file manager - I use Thunar.
Recently I've been trying Gnome. Whenever I shove a memory stick into a USB port, or connect my digital camera, it can automatically pop up a file manager showing all the goodies on that device. KDE does this too. I like this. Although quick at the command line, I like not having to go sudo to mount the device and all that.
If I want to stick with a lightweight setup using Icewm+Thunar, is there something non-huge I can install to make external devices fire up a Thunar window, or otherwise make access to the contents brainlessly easy?
On my windows console, i have installed sun virtualbox. I only have 768MB ram and so i downloaded a trial version of eboostr. I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?

When the systen is running there is a program/utility/kernel-driver? kthreadd in system monitor all the following programs are a child process of kthreadd. Is kthreadd part of elevator=cfq and can kthreadd be influenced by params. kthreads uses no cpu time memory or shared memory so it must be in kernel. is there any documentation on this subject? System 11.3 on quad processor 8 gb mem nvidia-card and driver.

I would like to add the option mem=4096M to make some software works. but as long as I try with more than 512M, I have the error: error 28 selected item cannot fit into memory.
My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
