latest update to 11.3 a complete failure afterwards on reboot I'm instructed that I must first install kernel and to strike any key to exit which return me to grub menu. thats it for me and Osuse. 11.3 has been one bug after another and to much for me overcome. I will return once a day to see if anyone can fix this/
View 9 RepliesDual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -
I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.
I've tried about a billion times to get this to install correctly to no avail. This is the amd64 desktop edition, but I've tried with the 32 bit as well. I have a lenovo W500. The system never boots off the USB. It gets through a bit, with text output, and then stops. Sometimes it doesn't even give an error message, and other times I get something like udev failed while loading some pci device. I've tried re-downloading the iso several times, different USB keys, different USB key creators, CDs, to no avail.
I then thought, well, heck with it, I'll just install 10.10 and upgrade. Nope, there's a GPG key error for some bizarre reason, which is tripping up apt, but it's not going to tell me what key that is so I can go and get it (and apt-key update does nothing). Command line upgrades fail similarly. So finally, I go for broke and try to just install the thing with Wubi. Of course, that eventually crashes too.
I get the following error when YAST tries to install the latest updates----Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: db3 error(-30987) from dbcursor->c_get: DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND: Requested page not found error: error(-30987) getting "" records from Requireversion index----could it be from removing KWALLET? Now I cannot re-install it due to this error.

I did the latest update on the opensuse 11.4 other day and since then my USB drive is not mounting. initially I thought its gone because my son dropped on the floor. But then when I plugged it to Windows 7 machine it mounted then I plugged it into another Ubuntu 10.10 machine it mounted so I figured out the there is some issue in the latest update. I have all the VMs in this drive and my main laptop is with OpenSuse 11.4

As soon as I was done installing and I was on a fresh desktop, I installed the Yast updates that were available, rebooted, and now I can't login to any of my User accounts. Whenever I try to login, it tells me that it is "Unable to Open Session".o any of you know how I can fix this without having to reinstall all over again

Here's what to do right after applying the latest kernel security patch (2.6.34.7-0.4) to get the ATI driver back to work. Do not reboot yet make sure the update installed the headers and sources for kernel 2.6.34.7-0.4: rpm -qa | grep 2.6.34.7-0.4 should print the files in red on a 64bit system:

Toshiba notebook is set up to triple boot win7, mepis 8.5 and os 11.3.Recent update of os11.3 left system with boot failure, "file not found".I booted mepis and used utility to reinstall grub, but no joy.
Appeared to install ok but on reboot, sda5 identified as 'mepis' not os11.3 and would not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
Next, booted live Parted Magic and repaired as per another thread here, but again, no joy.NONE of the systems will boot.Rebooted mepis live cd and reinstalled grub again. Sda5 still identified as mepis and will not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
how to check what my latest installed drivers are and how to install the latest? If I search for Nvidia in YaST then noting comes up. I beleive the latest drivers from Nvidia are 195.xxx

.After trying to instal 10.40 as a "guest" of Windows7 in its own partition on drive D I got all the way thru then re-booted to finish the install as requested. At that point after reboot I selected Ubuntu from the boot menu then it hung up after quickly displaying and overwriting some option numbers - probably for GRUB
I uninstalled 10.40 then tried Ubuntu 9.4. It worked better and gave me an option menu after the install reboot. If I chose "normal" it also hung up.I was succesful by chosing one of the other GRUB choices that it gave me.Now everything works but with an older version.

I get a complete system failure when my CPU is stressed. It's not the temperature because when it crashes the CPU temp is only ~55 C. When it crashes the video freezes but the sound repeats itself. Example. I start handbraking a movie, then open a tv show in VLC. This is what I hear.

That continues until I reboot my computer. This crash is pretty reliable, as every time I load my CPU that happens. If I don't do anything CPU intensive, I don't get the crash. Also, if I only load up one core of my CPU, then everything is fine. However if I run something such as prime95 or handbrake (which both utilize all 4 of my cores) the computer will crash within 30 seconds.

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 with karmic kernel and GNOME, on toshiba 512 MB RAm laptop. it worked fine but some times after complete shut down or sleep, it wont boot again. Laptop is completely dead and silent. I had to power it off, battery taken out and inserted again to get it started again. Then it worked all normal and fine. Why it happens and what i shud do next?

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 which has been religiously updated ever since I clean installed it on this computer. Today, about an hour after my last automatic update for Ubuntu 9.10, I went to click one of my mouse buttons, and nothing worked. This happened after I tried to open GIMP 2.6, which had never failed before. So there I was with no right or left click on my mouse or keypad, no any opening of GIMP. Things were frozen - but typing was okay. The cursor ended up in a window, and I could type. I waited for about 10 minutes, then turned off the computer with my power button. When I turned it on, I was able to open up a firefox and left click once. Then everything froze. I turned off, then turned on again. Same situation. One left click, then no reaction. Finally by chance when I was booting up again, the boot screen offering choices (which I don't know how to get to if I want to) came up, and I chose a different, earlier version of Ubuntu. Now I can click my mouse left or right. But still no GIMP. It is installed; just no reaction when I try to run the program as I have literally hundreds of times before. All started with the automatic update earlier this evening.

I am however unsure which is the best one to use if I want to achieve this:Somehow I want to back up my hard drive containing my ubuntu system byte for byte so that if the hard drive were to fail I could simply go to the store, get a new hard drive, restore my backup and be up and running again without having to do any re installments of ubuntu or any other programs for that matter.

In the past month my root folder has become corrupted 3 times. General system restore doesn't help and installing the default kernel doesn't help. I don't expect a forum to be able to help with the corruption issus but is there any way to restore root without a complete re-install? It's a little time consuming.
