I would like to add the option mem=4096M to make some software works. but as long as I try with more than 512M, I have the error: error 28 selected item cannot fit into memory.
I installed Mac OS X 10.6, Windows 7 Ultimate, and made 4 partitions.OSX and 7 installed fine, but when I tried to install SUSE, it stopped at 92%.I get this error:

Immediately after the grub menu disappears I get the following error msg: Error 18 Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. What is happening here and what would be the right procedure to avoid this happening again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"
And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.
we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

AMD Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz;Biostar TA790GX 128M Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3300 Graphics card built in;
4 Gb (2*2 sticks) DDR2 800 MHz RAM
The installation went smoothly, But on first restart and login (and subsequent ones too!) I get a light purple screen with a skyblue box at top left corner, with xconsole written on it. when I Left click anywhere on the screen, I get a popdown with a number of options, of which only XTerm (bash shell) and exit (logout) options work. Now I know the HD 3300 graphics card drivers are not built into the SuSE 11.1 distribution, and I have already downloaded them (Linux ones)from ATI website. I login as Superuser, and type init 3 to go to a very basic screen,login as user, change to superuser again and then run the following file i downloaded from ATI:

Also I tried making changes via sax2 command, it doesnt seem to work. A window opens where I see that my graphics card has been detected but thats about it. nothing else in that option, everything is greyed out (nothing to be selected)

I'm trying to install deluge via ssh and my vps has 512mb ram and is only using 11% of it prior to running the code.
Is anyone else having this issue when running "su" after the latest batch of current updates? Every time I run su, I get the following:

I have been setting up a vps I got out with bhost.net, with CentOS installed. I've been learning and have set up everying I need with the exception of ftp/sftp.
Using yum I installed vsftpd and ran into problems, thinking it was something I might of done I did a fresh install of CentOS and I still recieve the same problem on a fresh install so it is nothing I have done to the server.
The problem is when connecting via a sftp client I get an out of memory error. This error is listed in the putty faq ( url ) under A.7.5, there is a brief explaintion of the cure under A.7.6.

Originally I was having trouble installing Service Pack 2 for vista and I made the fool's mistake of changing the active partition in disk management from the boot partition to the windows partition. This blew up grub. After restarting I was dumped at the grub terminal i.e.

so I thought okay, I will just reinstall grub. I ran setup (hdx,y) but now when I restart first of all the splash screen is different, rather then the blue background with the big words in white, fedora 11, it's black and I get a error saying unable to read any images. I can see the different OS' I have on the grub screen but attempting to load any of them gives me
error 17 cannot mount selected partition.
I am currently running the Fedora 11 xfce spin live cd. From the terminal here, here is some information. sda3 is my fedora 11 partition I am not sure maybe it is because of ext4 but I can't seem to mount it using mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/xxxxx.

From what I can figure out, grub can not figure out which disk has my root file system. I checked the partition labels and they match the UUID that are in my fstab.
I 've reinstalled XP partition on my ubuntu system 8.10 ,After that i reinstalled grub using live CD ubuntu 9.04

Plan to use GRUB for multiple booting to select the OS but only with luck have I got it partially to work. Windows 98 and Puppy 431 O.K on first HDD but Puppy 421 on second HDD /dev/sdb1 stops at error 21.
View 6 Replies View Related i ran into this issue only because i wanted to learn. I was reading the book, linux troubleshooting and decided to give it a try.
1) I went to /boot/ and moved vmlinuz (kernel file) to my home directory. (/root/)
2) I booted, it didnt boot (as expected) and now the troubleshooting part begins.
3) i entered to grub config mode using c
4) When i press root (hd0, (tab) it gave me 2 partitions. hd0 which is my boot partition hd1 which is my '/' partition. Please keep in mind its LVM and not a physical partition
5) If i do this, root (hd0,1), and press boot, it gives the following error Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
During my research i found that, LVM is not supported by grub, so kindly confirm me this ? is this the reason i am not able to access my root partition ? i am doing this on vmware so no issues, but just for the sake of learning, can someone tell me some way of restoring it without using any rescure disk (livecd, liveusb etc) ?
I've been running my Dell Mini 9 with the latest alpha for 10.04 since January, but over the weekend I botched things pretty badly and decided to go back to 9.10.I saved my home directory to another machine, and proceeded to install from a 9.10 USB disk. Things didn't go terribly well (I kept seeing "devkit-disks-daemon" crashing) but the install did complete. I shutdown the netbook, yanked the USB drive and powered it back on only to be greeted the grub menu. I assume 64 would be more effective?On the other hand there seem to be less problems with the availability and/or installation of applications on a 32 bit system.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.

When I attempt to play a store-bought dvd using mplayer I get the following error: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I found that some folks were editing their .mplayer/gui.conf file to read vo_driver = "x11" and were having success with it. I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?

Is there something I must do to have sysinfo report true value and does this mean that memory not shown is not being used?
