My machine will not shutdown - It goes through the motions, it closes everything the green suse screen appears and the progress bar goes to the end. Then it flashes the keyboard lights and spins the disk down and then stops with the green splash screen - I have to press the power button to turn off.

everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. I'm trying to become familiar with the file system. I noticed my MP3 player (USB) is not mounted automatically when I plug it into the USB cable. I searched Google to find out how to auto mount this device and it worked. However, I didn't give this enough thought to what I was doing I guess. Now if the MP3 player is not connected to the USB cable the boot process stops at the splash screen waiting for the device. The window on the screen states the following:
The disk drive for /media/sdc1/ is not ready or not present. Continue to wait or press S to skip mounting or M to manual recovery.
I don't remember what I did to start this whole mess so I don't know how to undo it? Could someone please help me undo this? I would like the device to auto mount ONLY if it's plugged in if this is possible.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS onto a blank hard drive with the prospective goal of running WoW on it. I installed Wine and all my security updates and restarted; everything worked fine, but I noticed that the system was suggesting that I get some "proprietary" drivers for my HD Radeon 4550 card. I proceeded to install them and was told that the the OS needed to restart to make the changes. I clicked the close button, restarted from the menu in the top-right hand corner, and when my machine started back up -bam!- frozen on the ubuntu splash screen.
I'm reinstalling now (after trying everything I could think of) and I just want to know how the hell this happened, and how I can avoid it in the future. I'm trying to make the switch from Linux to Windows, but this isn't making it any easier. Also: is there any way I can set up ubuntu to look and interface like a windows clone.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 kde on msi wind u123. Everything runs fine except that whenever i try to shutdown or restart system i see both splash background and the rolling text. I think i should only see the splash with the progress bar until shutting down finishes. But for no apparent reasons i see both which is very annoying.
It might help that i changed the splash screen to a custom one. Here is the one i use and i followed every single instruction.
I have just installed Ubuntu on a machine that has an ATI Radeon 3450 video card installed. If I boot the machine into recovery mode and then select 'normal boot' at the pause I get to a fully functional desktop that is using the fglrx driver. Compiz is happy and my graphics look great. If I boot normally and just let the machine do its own thing I get just past the 'select' screen and the machine stops. There is no further disk activity and the monitor goes into standby mode. I can't see anything relevant in any of the log files.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUpon boot up the usual little mouse splash boot is suppose to come up. Once I first installed it (10.10 via usb) the boot screen worked perfectly but after I updated via the update manager the boot splash became all static and green lines across the image. It still boots up to the login screen but it's just ugly looking at it.

I have installed Opensuse 11.4 and the desktop won't start i get an green striped screen, i have tried to run yast but it seems mine NVIDIA isn't correct installed.
I have an NVidia SE6150 Graphic Card and i have tried to configure the startup parameter vga=0x317, i have changed this to vga=0 to get vesa mode but that doesn't work, i have an wide screen monitor that supports 24 bit and 1360x768.
Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,
because i am booting from the dvd. I dropped to the shell where i saw this message "Inappropriate ioct1 for device". What does all this mean.
OpenSUSE seems to have an issue picking up and working with my newer webcam. This webcam does work with linux, it works with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and Linux Mint 9 Isadora but openSUSE 11.3 doesnt seem to like it. Information about webcam drivers seems to be missing now, I tried the drivers repo but no luck. Cheese freezes and WXcam comes up with a green screen with no video. This is a gateway product by my understanding but it seems to be linux compatible, especially with the Linux 2.6.34 kernel that both Ubuntu and openSUSE use right now. But for some reason its not quite clicking with openSUSE 11.3

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
I recently installed Ubuntu Studio and after an update the standard Plymouth splash screen began to show. I tried changing it back via the "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth" method but I am getting a blue kbuntu splash screen instead of the ubuntu studio splash.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTo change your Armarok splash screen, open your file manager in SU mode and rename the .jpg you wish to be your new splash as "splash_screen.jpg" and then copy it to "root>usr>KDE4>apps>armarok>images", overwrite the existing file and your new splash screen will take effect the next time you load the application. As a note this will only work for the KDE4 users. I don not run gnome so i do not know how to do it in that system, I would assume it is very similar.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have never been able to see the splash screen, something that I'd like. I have checked the options on the bootloader and it says "splash=silent" (that's disabled?). I found it confusing, because the ubuntu kernel boots with "splash" but when I try that option on OpenSuSE 11.2 it doesn't.Also when I shut down the laptop the screen goes crazy, only the two top cms shows "something" which are blinking and crazy green and white console words moving from one place to another so fast I can't even been able to read what it actually says.Either way, the laptop shuts down without any problem (?). I think is the normal shutdown process (without splash) but it's a bit perturbing. I've had had a couple of kind of "aesthetics" issues, but far from critical. My overall experience with OpenSuSE after 4 or 5 years being "debianized" have been very nice .

I get the OpenSuse splash screen, and the system just hangs.I found that if I press <Esc> and hit <Enter> a few times, the system will eventually boot. I also found if I wiggle the mouse during the splash screen, the progress bar will begin to move, and the system will boot.Seems to be something about detecting hardware during the boot phase, and it seems to be input related.

Did a clean install with 11.2 after being very impressed with the LiveCD. After installation process finished, laptop booted up and I had a green screen, no icons and a mouse cursor. REALLY liked the way the OS performed on the LIVECD and would like to give it a real shot.I can install Fedora 11, Ubuntu, Madriva and Mint Linux with no problem on the same Toshiba laptop.

The restart, suspend and shutdown buttons are not operational. However, if I power down the computer manually and restart the login screen comes up normally.

If I edit the menu entry and remove "quiet splash" from the "linux ..." line the computer boots perfectly fine without any errors. How can I diagnose this?
When I'm shutting it down it hangs on the splash screen. The screen then fills with white in a weird way; it's hard to describe but it's like watching film become exposed to air. It almost looks like there's something wrong with the screen but there isn't. I have no idea why it could be doing this.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A305D.
i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

View 8 Replies View RelatedI noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?
When I am using flash a lot of times it will just display a grey screen or just stops. I wanted to use Turbotax today but I can not because of this.
